Radiofrequency current is then passed through the electrode to heat the tumor tissue and ablate -- or eliminate -- it.

Pollak, MD Ablation is used to treat abnormal heart rhythms. The type of arrhythmia and the presence of other heart disease will determine whether ablation can be performed.Non-surgical ablation, used for many types of arrhythmias, is performed in a special lab called the electrophysiology (EP) laboratory. During this non-surgical procedure a catheter is inserted into a specific area of the heart. A special machine directs energy through the catheter to small areas of the heart muscle that causes the abnormal heart rhythm. This energy "disconnects" the pathway of the abnormal rhythm. It can also be used to disconnect the electrical pathway between the upper chambers (atria) and the lower chambers (ventricles) of the heart.

  • Part 4: Thermal Ablation: Diagnosis and Treatment of Varicose Veins Endovenous Thermal Ablation This procedure treats a long segment of refluxed vein. In this procedure, a long tube is inserted into the vein, and laser or radio frequency energy is applied to the numbed leg to correct the reflux. Conveniently, this two hour procedure can be done in-office. Relaxation and anti-inflammatory medications are give before draping the leg in a sterile cloth. A catheter is inserted to cover the wire that receives the energy to make it more comfortable. The heat from the ablation device thermally injures the lining of the diseased vein, and the vein closes permanently. After treatment, steristrips cover the insertion point, while a compression stocking keeps your leg healing properly for 48 hours. The compression stocking must be worn until the 7-day follow up. You can resume most daily activities immediately. It is normal to feel some pain during the procedure and see bruising along the entire treatment area, which can last for up to two weeks. Acetaminophen and ibuprofen will help you deal with the pain. While uncommon, some risks associated with Thermal Ablation include: Infection, bleeding, deep and superficial thrombosis, numbness, blistering, or skin discoloration. Risks are minimized and managed by using a sterile environment. DVT and numbness usually goes away in up to six months. In a very small amount of cases, numbness in the calf can be permanent.

  • Epicor Cardiac Ablation LP (Low Profile) Thoracotomy Animation The Epicor LP system has a lower profile (smaller relative to the first generation technology) as well as other features designed to facilitate easier device introduction and placement around and on patients' hearts. In addition, the Epicor LP System is equally suited for use in both closed-chest procedures performed through a single incision, and in open-chest procedures. In the December 2007 edition of The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, the results of an independent investigator clinical trial led by Mark Groh, MD, showed that AF is effectively treated using the Epicor Cardiac Ablation System when used concomitantly to corrective heart surgery. The investigators reported that more than 83 percent of all patients, followed for at least six months after surgery, were free from AF. In addition, 86 percent of the patients followed for at least 18 months remained free from AF. The investigators reported that there were no device or ablative procedure-related adverse events and specifically noted an absence of esophageal, coronary or phrenic nerve damage. The 2007 results confirmed the findings of an earlier European multi-center trial published in the September 2005 Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. The investigators in the European clinical trial reported an 85 percent freedom-from-AF rate at six months post-procedure - the study's primary efficacy end point - in patients concomitantly treated for AF with the Epicor Cardiac Ablation System.

  • Global Endometrial Ablation for Heavy Menstrual Bleeding-Mayo Clinic Experts estimate that 20 percent of women experience excessive or prolonged menstrual bleeding at some time during their lives, particularly as they approach menopause. A new, less invasive procedure called global endometrial ablation (GEA) preserves the uterus, while decreasing menstrual bleeding and shortening patients recovery time. In an article published in the January issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Mayo Clinic researchers attempt to determine the percentage of women who do not achieve permanent symptom relief from GEA and identify several factors that put women at greater risk for this outcome. We've known for the past five to six years that global endometrial ablation devices are very effective, says Mayo Clinic gynecologic surgeon Abimbola Famuyide, MBBS, one of the studys authors. But some physicians have observed that up to 30 percent of patients may require additional treatment five years and beyond after undergoing ablation. According to the Mayo researchers, identifying risk factors that affect treatment outcomes following GEA is an important advance in this field. This knowledge can help surgeons determine whether GEA is appropriate for a specific patient and help them provide patients with better guidance when choosing a treatment option, say researchers. Optimizing preoperative patient counseling and patient selection could allow failure rates associated with GEA to decrease, explains Dr. Famuyide.
  • Atrial Fibrillation Radiofrequency Ablation Atrial Fibrillation Radiofrequency Ablation will be the focus of a live webcast, hosted by Hartford Hospital from 6 to 7 pm EDT (22:00 UTC). The most common form of arrhythmia, ATRIAL FIBRILLATION (A-fib) affects some 2 million Americans each year. This interruption in the regular heartbeat impairs the heart's ability to perform effectively, and can result in stroke, congestive heart failure or cardiomyopathy. Origins of the disorder are not clearly understood, but chances of developing it increase with age. When medications and other conventional interventions fail to restore a normal heartbeat, radiofrequency ablation is a leading option. The electrophysiology experts at Hartford Hospital are...
