  • Red Bull Racing F1 Party @ Central Chitlom, Bangkok (19 December 2010) Ratchadamnoen Road, the "Street of Kings", in the historic sector of Bangkok has reverberated to the sights, sounds and atmosphere of modern-day Formula 1 as Australian grand prix star Mark Weber demonstrated the 2010 F1 World Championship-winning Red Bull RB6 single-seater on a temporary course laid out specially for the occasion. The weekend in Bangkok was simply all about Red Bull Racing; Ratchadamnoen Road has never reverberated to grand prix engines, and the arrival of the victorious England-based team here caused huge anticipation which swiftly translated into raw numbers: estimates put the crowd at as high as 150000 people, some of whom travelled hundreds of kilometers to enjoy the action. The sight, sound and aggression of a current-generation grand prix car in full voice was a real novelty here, the RB6's futuristic aerodynamic form, penned by the legendary former McLaren and Williams aerodynamicist Adrian Newey (who after Red Bull's triumphant season can now lay claim to having won constructors titles with three different F1 teams), with its trademark Red Bull corporate colour scheme was a wholly unique sight on the usually much more slow-paced streets of Bangkok. This too was no run-of-the-mill 2010-edition grand prix car, but quite simply the cream of the crop, being the double title winner.   • Heavy Airfoil in a Freestream Horizontal vortex theory One computer model of the typical bathroom found that the spray from the shower-head drives a horizontal vortex. This vortex has a low-pressure zone in the centre, which sucks the curtain. David Schmidt of University of Massachusetts was awarded the 2001 Ig Nobel Prize in Physics for his partial solution to the question of why shower curtains billow inwards. He used a computational fluid dynamics code to achieve the results. Professor Schmidt is adamant that this was done "for fun" in his own free time without the use of grant or other public monies. The Coandă Effect he Coandă effect is a result of entrainment of ambient fluid around the fluid jet. When a nearby wall does not allow the surrounding fluid to be pulled inwards towards the jet (ie to be entrained), the jet moves towards the wall instead. The fluid of the jet and the surrounding fluid should be essentially the same substance (a gas jet into a body of gas or a liquid jet into a body of liquid). In one application, a jet of air is blown over the upper surface of an airfoil, which can have a strong influence on the overall lift, especially at high angles of attack when the flow would otherwise separate (stall). It operated between Projects Mercury and Apollo, with 10 manned flights occurring in 1965 and 1966.   • Adrian Newey The greatest race car designer of all time Adrian Newey (born 26 December 1958) is the chief technical officer of the Red Bull Racing Formula One team. Newey has worked in both Formula One and IndyCar racing as a race engineer, aerodynamicist, designer and technical director and enjoyed success in both categories. Considered one of the best engineers in Formula One, Newey-inspired designs have won numerous titles and almost 80 Grands Prix, dominating much of the 1990s. After almost leaving McLaren in 2001 speculation persisted that he did not wish to remain at the Woking-based team. In November 2005 it was confirmed that he would be transferring to Red Bull Racing in the new year.

  • Lister at it's best? Beginning in 1954, company manager and racing driver Brian Lister brought out the first in a series of sports cars from a Cambridge iron works. Inspired by Cooper, he used a tubular ladder chassis, de Dion rear axle, and inboard drum brakes.[1] Like others, he used a tuned MG engine and stock gearbox.[2] It made its debut at the British Empire Trophy at Oulton Park in 1954, with the skilled, and light, (former MG pilot) Archie Scott Brown at the wheel. Good as he was, Scott Brown could not make up the Lister-MG's deficiencies against superior competition, so Lister swapped in a Moore-tuned Bristol two litre engine and knockoff wire wheels in place of the MG's discs. For the sports car race supporting the 1954 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, Scott Brown easily won the two litre class and placed fifth overall, ahead even of C-Jags, behind only works Astons. The Lister-Bristol spent the rest of the 1954 season proving this was no fluke, beating Maseratis, Cooper-Masers, and even Lotus-Bristols. In 1955, a handful of Lister-Bristols were built with a new body by ex-Bristol man Lucas, claimed to have been designed with the aid of a wind tunnel.[2] Despite its fins and strakes, it was less dominant than the '54, and competition was only getting stronger.[2] With this in mind, in 1954 Lister moved up to a six cylinder F2 A6GCS, from the very Maseratis he had beaten in 1954, for his own works drivers, while privateers (mostly club racers) got the Bristol (at ₤3900).[3] The ...
