  • Batik Art, Sri Lanka by For Bookings: For More Video: Batik (Javanese pronunciation: [ˈbateʔ]; Indonesian pronunciation: [ˈbaːtik]; English: /ˈbætɪk/ or /bəˈtiːk/) is cloth which traditionally uses a manual wax-resist dyeing technique. Due to modern advances in the textile industry, the term has been extended to include fabrics which incorporate traditional batik patterns even if they are not produced using the wax-resist dyeing techniques. Silk batik is especially popular.[citation needed] Javanese traditional batik, especially from Yogyakarta and Surakarta, has special meanings rooted to the Javanese conceptualization of the universe. Traditional colours include indigo, dark brown, and white which represent the three major Hindu Gods (Brahmā, Visnu, and Śiva). This is related to the fact that natural dyes are only available in indigo and brown. Certain patterns can only be worn by nobility; traditionally, wider stripes or wavy lines of greater width indicated higher rank. Consequently, during Javanese ceremonies, one could determine the royal lineage of a person by the cloth he or she was wearing. Other regions of Indonesia have their own unique patterns which normally take themes from everyday lives, incorporating patterns such as flowers, nature, animals, folklore or people. The colours of pesisir batik, from the coastal cities of northern Java, is especially vibrant, and it absorbs influence from the Javanese, Arab, Chinese and Dutch culture. In the ...

  • Indonesian Craftsman Turn Wood into Batik Handicrafts ANCHOR: Batik textiles have long been known as one of Indonesia's traditional handicrafts. Now the craftsman turn wood into batik handicrafts. Let's take a look. STORY: The craftsman in the Krebet village turn wooden boards into masks, puppets, statues and other products, which are now painted with traditional batik designs and patterns. These products are sold across the archipelago of 17000 islands. But the bulk of it is exported to the United States and other countries. Men do the hard job of sawing and cutting the wooden boards sourced from the jungles around Yogyakarta. They are carved into delicate masks and statues, which are sanded down to a perfect smooth finish. Female artisans then take over for the final artistic touch. They paint the wooden products with batik designs by applying trace wax and dyes --- just as it is done on cloth. The products are then sealed with a special finish to ensure the colours do not fade. Most of the artisans are accustomed to such delicate work, as they are used to create a range of leather products before that market started shrinking. [Putut Supriyadi, Wooden Batik Handicrafts Gallery Owner]: "We were first producing leather goods but the sales were not good. So we decide to make wooden batik products and this product has garnered a good market." He says the products have increased the economic activity in the village due to good demand. Putut adds that the capacity is enough to make 3000 wooden batik pieces a month and that ...

  • Indonesians Click with Batik CHAN: Batik is a coloring technique used on textile. It can be found throughout Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. And in Indonesia it is considered a national art form. Our Indonesian team tells us about the latest batik designs sweeping the market. STORY: About 50 new trends of batik, by nine famous Indonesian fashion designers, are now on display in Jakarta shops. There is relaxed batik, formal batik, night gown batik and modern batik. It's a part of a government program which started last year and aims to bring batik back to its days of glory. Batik fashion was revived two years ago by fashion designer Edward Hutabarat. Since then, more designers joined in on the trend, each one with their own unique designs. In a short while, many people in Indonesia started wearing batik... to the cinema, the coffee shop and even the workplace. [Iva, Artis Indonesia]: "I like to use it because the designs are cute and up to date with today's fashion world. There is also a wide variety of models we can choose from to suit our mood." Batik in Indonesia is not just a fashion, but also brings people together. Back when Malaysians claimed batik as their own, Indonesians flocked to the Malaysian embassy in Indonesia to protest. • Wax / Batik Technique: Silk Painting with Jill Kennedy DVD Title: Silk Painting with Jill Kennedy Jill Kennedy is the famous UK author of several books on her favorite art -- silk painting. In this DVD she demonstrates 10 of her most called upon techniques for creating fantastic designs in silk. In this excerpt she demonstrates how wax often is preferential to gutta or other resists for it's ability to contain or hold colors and be used in larger areas while providing similar effects to gutta's ability to contain dye within regions. Here she emphasizes the ability to work with dyes immediately after application and demonstrates how fun it is to use traditional Indonesian tjantings and Japanese brushes to create "Pisces" or the "twin fish" design in the scarf she is working on.
  • REFLECTIONS IN BATIK : ROSI ROBINSON Rosi Robinson has devoted a career spanning more than 30 years as an art director, instructor, author and artist in traditional and non-traditional methods of batik. She is the author of a leading-selling batik book from SEARCH PRESS, "Creative Batik". Here Rosi discusses her work as a painterly artist -- an expression which describes using traditional implements such as kitzkahs, tjantings, dye, wax, and indonesian cotton to achieve portraits that rival water colors, oils and pastels for their depth, warmth, beauty, and detail. "...My travels and many interests are my inspiration. My work ranges from realistic land and seascapes, sporting scenes (especially rugby and cricket), animals, birds, horses, flowers to abstract images, eg reflections, which I create with the wax and dyes on fabric and paper. I try to capture movement, colour and luminosity in my work, as well as contrasting light and shadow." Produced by Studio Galli Productions - Edited with original piano music by Andrew Galli.

  • Batik Painting 1 A Batik Tulis maker applying melted wax following pattern on fabric using canting, at Mirota Batik Jl. Jend. A. Yani 9 (Malioboro Street) Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Melted wax (Javanese: malam) is applied to cloth before being dipped in dye. It is common for people to use a mixture of beeswax and paraffin wax. The beeswax will hold to the fabric and the paraffin wax will allow cracking, which is a characteristic of batik. Wherever the wax has seeped through the fabric, the dye will not penetrate. Sometimes several colours are used, with a series of dyeing, drying and waxing steps. Thin wax lines are made with a canting needle (or a tjanting tool), a wooden handled tool with a tiny metal cup with a tiny spout, out of which the wax seeps. Other methods of applying the wax onto the fabric include pouring the liquid wax, painting the wax on with a brush, and applying the hot wax to pre-carved wooden or metal wire block and stamping the fabric. Dipping a cloth in a dye. A batik painting depicting two Indian women. After the last dyeing, the fabric is hung up to dry. Then it is dipped in a solvent to dissolve the wax, or ironed between paper towels or newspapers to absorb the wax and reveal the deep rich colors and the fine crinkle lines that give batik its character. This traditional method of batik making is called Batik Tulis (lit: Written Batik). The invention of the copper block or cap developed by the Javanese in the 20th century revolutionized batik ...

Let's have a look at how the kimono and batik are combined to create a new fashion style. STORY: Fashion designers from Indonesia and Japan have created a new style, featuring loosely-fitting kimonos made with batik-patterned cloth. About 50 of these recent creations are on display. The batik-kimonos are designed for different functions: for traveling, relaxation, formal workwear and for young people. [Nulia, Indonesian Batik-Kimono Designer]: The combination of batik and kimono - first we find the most appropriate batik pattern, and because Indonesians like to wear kimono-style clothes, we tried to mix them and it looks good. So we have showed it here. [Japanese Batik-Kimono Designer]: Actually Indonesians like Japanese culture, and Japanese like Indonesian culture as well. Since 300 years ago, Japanese ladies have loved batik; they imported it to make Kimonos. So I hope this show can deepen the relationship between Indonesia and Japan. NTD, Jakarta, Indonesia.

  • BATIK MAKING PROCESS Batik is an art form of repeated wax drawing and dying developed approximately 2000 years ago, it is found in the far corners of the world, but is especially popular in Indonesia. The highest forms are made on the island of Java where in the 16th century it became the property and fashion of the royal courtesans to the Sultan. It wasn't until 200 years later that is became available to the wider public where it became deeply embedded in community life. Because of its royal pedigree, antique pieces are now exorbitantly expensive. Batik's vastly different designs and colors are symbolic of the numerous producing regions, towns and their subsequent festivals and religious ceremonies. The number of colors in a batik piece represents how many times the wax drawing and dying process was painstakingly repeated. Fine batik silk scarves, skirts and pillow covers are available at Color Island -

  • Jon Bagul, Professional Batik Silk Painting Jon Bagul, born in Sabah and now living and working in Kuala Lumpur, elevates the traditional art of batik to something sublime: his light, detailed brush strokes and refreshing combinations of vibrant colors allow the viewer to step into his paintings. The uniqueness of his designs, which still retain traditional elements, are not just popular with residents of Kuala Lumpur but are also selling well to personal collectors from around the world. Recently one of Jon's paintings was presented to the Chinese President by the Malaysian Prime Minister at a ceremony to celebrate Sino-Malaysian relations. No better artist could have been chosen to represent both the traditional and modern aspects of art in Malaysia. Batik painting, using as it does, silk as its basis has enabled Jon to extend his work into soft furnishing and interior design accessories, including table runners and tablecloths, floor and throw cushions. These unique and desirable items, all with his trademark flowers are garnering interest from many quarters and he has been enjoying commissions from local corporations, private individuals and foreign and local dignitaries. Not surprisingly, given the comprehensive range of decorative items Jon Bagul can create he was asked to decorate the Heliconia Restaurant in Jalan Tangsi, Kuala Lumpur, with paintings and table runners. Whether you are looking for a one-off exclusive painting to enjoy in your own home, or maybe a few cushions and soft-furnishings for a ...
