All concern the cycling of materials by living systems and the coupling of biological models to physical and chemical processes. This research in the global carbon cycle, for example, suggests that biological evolution has been at least as important in shaping the Earth's thermal and chemical regimes as pure physical forcings. In one case, the evolution of plankton with shells of calcium carbonate pushed Earth's climate toward additional greenhouse warmth. Further back, bacterial mats and crusts changed the climate billions of years before the first mosses and ferns greened the landscape, cooling the Earth by 30 degrees C. Without this microbial forcing of global temperature, complex proteins would not have been chemically stable enough for higher forms of life to evolve.   • The Hydrologic Cycle In this film we survey the campus of Boston University and ask them several questions relating to science. We ask them if they have any knowledge of what the hydrologic cycle is, as well as what an aquifer is. We found that most people had very little knowledge on both subjects. These two topics are very important when understanding science, here is why: Water is the most essential natural resource in life. It takes part in what is known as the hydrologic cycle. In this cycle, water molecules take on several different paths throughout the environment. The hydrologtic cycle is also key in other biogeochemical cycles. Without water there would be no life. Next, we have aquifers. An aquifer is a spongelike region of rock and soil that holds groundwater. The upperlimit of an aquifer is referred to as the water table. Aquifers may hold groundwater for long periods of time, thus making the water quite ancient. The largest known aquifer in North America is known as the Oglalla Aquifer.   • Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Flight, Antartica 2009 In 2009, an MBARI research team led by Ken Smith set sail on the Research Vessel Ice Breaker (RVIB) Nathaniel B. Palmer to study biogeochemical cycles around icebergs using novel instruments. The primary purpose of the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle is to deliver a GPS drop tag to the top of the iceberg. The tag sends a position via satellite every hour and that information is downloaded to MBARI and sent to engineers on the ship. These positions allow researchers to calculate the speed, direction, and distance that the iceberg moves.

  • Geoengineering Earth's Climate Google Tech Talks January, 7 2008 Emergency preparedness is generally considered to be a good thing, yet there is no plan regarding what we might do should we be faced with a climate emergency. Such an emergency could take the form of a rapid shift in precipitation patterns, a collapse of the great ice sheets, the imminent triggering of strong climate system feedbacks, or perhaps the loss of valuable ecosystems. Over the past decade, we have used climate models to investigate the potential to reverse some of the effects of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere by deflecting some incoming sunlight back to space. This would probably be most cost-effectively achieved with the placement of small particles in or above the stratosphere. Our model simulations indicate that such geoengineering approaches could potentially bring our climate closer to the state is was in prior to the introduction of greenhouse gases. This talk will present much of what is known about such geoengineering approaches, and raise a range of issues likely to stimulate lively discussion. By far the largest reservoir of Earth's oxygen is within the silicate and oxide minerals of the crust and mantle (99.5%). Only a small portion has been released as free oxygen to the biosphere (0.01%) and atmosphere (0.36%). The main source of atmospheric oxygen is photosynthesis, which produces sugars and oxygen from carbon dioxide and water: 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy → C6H12O6 + 6O2 Photosynthesizing organisms include the plant life of the land areas as well as the phytoplankton of the oceans. The tiny marine cyanobacterium Prochlorococcus was discovered in 1986 and accounts for more than half of the photosynthesis of the open ocean.   • ABM vs. PLM Present biogeochemical models typically use a lumped-system (population-level) modeling (LSM) approach that assumes average properties of a population within a control volume. For modern models that formulate phytoplankton growth as a nonlinear function of the internal nutrient (eg, Droop kinetics), this averaging assumption can introduce a significant error. Agent-based (individual-based) modeling (ABM) is an alternative approach that does not make the assumption of average properties. This paper presents a new agent-based phytoplankton model called iAlgae. The model is contrasted to a conventional lumped-system model, constructed based on identical underlying sub-models of nutrient uptake (including luxury uptake) and growth (cell quota, Droop model). The two models are validated against laboratory data and applied to a realistic scenario, consisting of a point source nutrient discharge into a river. For the realistic scenario, the ABM-predicted phytoplankton bloom is significantly lower than the LSM-predicted one, which is due to the intrapopulation distribution in cell quotas (due to different life histories of individuals) and nonlinearity of the growth rate model. In the ABM, a fraction of the population accumulates nutrients in excess of their immediate growth requirement (luxury uptake), leaving less for the remainder.
