  • The Bolivian Magic Un tour por Bolivia. Bolivia is divided into nine departments (departamentos); capitals in parentheses: Beni (Trinidad) Chuquisaca (Sucre) Cochabamba (Cochabamba) La Paz (La Paz) Oruro (Oruro) Pando (Cobija) Potosí (Potosí) Santa Cruz (Santa Cruz de la Sierra) Tarija (Tarija) Geography of Bolivia At 1098580 km² (424135 mi²), Bolivia is the world's 28th-largest country (after Ethiopia). It is comparable in size to Mauritania, and it has about 1.5 times the area of the US state of Texas. [10] Bolivia has been a landlocked nation since 1879, when it lost its coastal department of Litoral to Chile in the War of the Pacific. However, it does have access to the Atlantic via the Paraguay river. An enormous diversity of ecological zones are represented within Bolivia's territory. The western highlands of the country are situated in the Andes mountains and include the Bolivian Altiplano. The eastern lowlands include large sections of Amazonian rainforests and Chaco. The highest peak is Nevado Sajama at 6542 metres (21463 ft) located in the department of Oruro. Lake Titicaca is located on the border between Bolivia and Peru. The Salar de Uyuni, the world's largest salt flat, lies in the southwest corner of the country, in the department of Potosí. Major cities are La Paz, El Alto, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, and Cochabamba. Bolivia's ethnic distribution is estimated to be 30% Quechua-speaking and 25% Aymara-speaking Amerindians. The largest of the approximately three-dozen native ...
  • Massive landslide ruins 150 homes in Bolivia Heavy rains caused a hilltop to collapse in a poor neighbourhood of the Bolivian capital on Sunday, cracking roads, destroying at least 150 homes and burying people's belongings under mud and debris. There were no fatalities despite the significant material damage in the barrio of Callapa, said La Paz Mayor Luis Revilla. People began evacuating late on Saturday when the hill started sliding and cracks appeared in streets and homes, Revilla said. It collapsed completely overnight. By day, residents scrambled over unstable terrain to try to rescue furniture and other possessions from the muck. But continued slides brought down more homes and made salvage efforts dangerous. Slides are common in this mountain city about 11900 feet (3640 metres) above sea level, where another hill collapse a little over a week ago destroyed 20 homes. Torrential rains have caused flooding and slides around much of the country in recent weeks, killing at least 44 people according to official reports. RT on Facebook: RT on Twitter:

  • Cocaine Factories - Bolivia Feb 2007 Evo Morales swept to power promising a social revolution which included legalising coca cultivation. A year on, America is so worried Bolivia is becoming a 'Narco State', it's slashed funding. "These are the coca leaves that we step on. This is the paste", states Roberto, showing us around his cocaine factory in the jungle. Promoting alternative uses of coca, such as in tea, is the heart of the government's policy. "The coca leaf is a cultural issue and part of our identity", explains Minister Felipe Casares. Officially, the jungles of Bolivia are producing fewer tonnes of cocaine paste. But Morales' policy of 'Coca Yes, Cocaine No' has the sceptics worried. As Senator Rafael Loayez states; "If we have this very permissive policy, we are going to hve a problem with drug trafficking."

  • Death Slide Home! While some think weve gone health and safety mad in the UK, this insane clip of some workers in Bolivia shows the opposite end of the scale. To save them having to walk down and across a huge valley, these Coca workers have rigged up cables which they suspend themselves from with rusted, old pulleys held together with bits of string, and risk everything gliding over the gorge with their harvest and even their children tied precariously beneath them! This is an extract from Deadliest Journeys which is a series airing on Current TV (Virgin 155, Sky 183) from April. Check out for more details.

  • Bolivia Bolivia,is a landlocked country in central South America. It is bordered by Brazil to the north and east, Paraguay and Argentina to the south, and Chile and Peru to the west. Prior to European colonization, the Bolivian territory was a part of the Inca Empire, which was the largest state in Pre-Columbian America. The Spanish Empire conquered the region in the 16th century. During most of the Spanish colonial period, this territory was called Upper Peru or Charcas and was under the administration of the Viceroyalty of Peru, which included most of Spain's South American colonies. After declaring independence in 1809, 16 years of war followed before the establishment of the republic, named for Simón Bolívar, on August 6, 1825. Bolivia has struggled through periods of political instability, dictatorships and economic woes. Bolivia is a democratic republic, divided into nine departments. Its geography is varied from the peaks of the Andes in the west, to the eastern lowlands, situated within the Amazon Basin. It is a developing country, with a medium Human Development Index score, and a poverty level around 60%. Its main economic activities include agriculture, forestry, and fishing, mining and manufacturing goods such as textiles, clothing, refined metals, and refined petroleum. Bolivia is very wealthy in minerals especially tin. The Bolivian population, estimated at 9 million, is multiethnic, including Amerindians, Mestizos, Europeans, Asians and Africans. The main language ...

  • Bolivia for Sale: Damian Lewis reports These are historic times in Bolivia with Evo Morales, the country's first ever indigenous president, being sworn into office in January 2006. Many of the reasons for his election victory can be attributed to a growing resistance to the economic model that Bolivia has been following since the 1980s. Characterised by the large scale privatisation of state owned enterprise and opening up of domestic markets, the policy has been blamed for huge rises in unemployment and continuing poverty. Large scale protests against water and gas privatisations in particular fuelled Evo Morales' victory. In 'Bolivia for Sale' Damian Lewis travels with Christian Aid to investigate the effects of privatisation in three key markets: water, gas and milk. More at: www.christian- Camera: Al Waterson

  • Cocaine Wars - Bolivia April 1996 For centuries the coco leaf was a blessing from the Gods. It alleviated the hunger of the Bolivian poor. Today it is a source of narcotic evil for the West. Bolivia's government, reliant on US aid and vulnerable to US dictates, has been forced to uphold a war against coco producers. The 'Leopards' - anti-narcotic paramilitaries - patrol the tropical jungles of Chapere and destroy small cocaine factories. Local farmers, like Berto, are put under pressure to rip up their coco plants and rePlace them with alternative crops. But now Berto can't sell his new produce and is more impoverished than ever. Human rights organisations report violent abuses committed by the 'Leopards' against men and women. US Ambassador coolly contests such reports and admits that Bolivia would be 'hurt' if it objected to US initiatives. Evo Morales leads the Chapere people in a protest rally. In their muddy villages, the tired faces don't understand why their government is trying to destroy their livelihood. Produced by ABC Australia Distributed by Journeyman Pictures
