  • Nepenthes, Carnivorous Plants The Nepenthes , popularly known as tropical pitcher plants or monkey cups, are a genus of carnivorous plants in the monotypic family Nepenthaceae. The genus comprises roughly 130 species, numerous natural and many cultivated hybrids. They are mostly liana-forming plants of the Old World tropics, ranging from South China, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines; westward to Madagascar (2 species) and the Seychelles (1); southward to Australia (3) and New Caledonia (1); and northward to India (1) and Sri Lanka (1). The greatest diversity occurs on Borneo and Sumatra with many endemic species. Many are plants of hot humid lowland areas, but the majority are tropical montane plants, receiving warm days but cool to cold humid nights year round. A few are considered tropical alpine with cool days and nights near freezing. The name monkey cups refers to the fact that monkeys have been observed drinking rainwater from these plants.

  • Mouse gets eaten by Nepenthes carnivorous plant! Back for another visit, this time peeking into the trap of Nepenthes spathulata proves folly for the mouse. It now belongs to the plant. Update: Now it seems this is confusing many people and/or making some upset over the death of a mouse. This is a carnivorous plant that is designed to attract, trap, kill, and digest whatever animal manages to slip into the bowl. This plant, and many others like it, live here on the planet with us. Now, if we discovered a planet containing these plants, we would go out of our way to get there to study it. I dedicated a large space of my home to growing what I can and then share the brilliance of these smart vegetables with those that understand and appreciate. To those- I will share more with you.

  • Safe Fungicides for Carnivorous Plants Since carnivorous plants often grow in very moist soil, they are sometimes prone to fungus and mold. When treating fungal infections, customers often ask us, "Which fungicides are safe for my plants?" With a few exceptions, carnivorous plants can actually be treated with the same fungicides as you would use with regular plants. In this podcast, you will learn what we use at our nursery, how to apply them and which fungicides to avoid.

  • The ultra-fast trap of an aquatic carnivorous plant Aquatic carnivorous bladderworts (Utricularia species) catch prey animals with suction traps. High speed video recordings show that the plant "swallows" its prey in less than a millisecond! The trapdoor morphology is optimized for a fast opening and closure, which we confirm by numerical simulations. It is an elastic valve that buckles inside (entailing opening) and then unbuckles (entailing closure). These precise and reproducible motions are coupled with a strong suction swirl causing accelerations of up to 600g, and leaving little escape chances for prey animals.

  • European green crab carnivorous scavenger Green Crab (I thought it's a blue one) trapped and ate claw of a smaller black mud crab. Then another crab tried to steal his catch. Dramadramadrama. The European green crab (Carcinus maenas) is a small shore crab (adults measure about 3" across) whose native distribution is along the coasts of the North and Baltic Seas. Although known by the common name of green crab, the shell (carapace) color can vary from dark, mottled green to orange or red, with yellow patches on the dorsal carapace. The crab is an able and effective forager—capable of learning and improving upon its food-gathering skills. Studies have shown that the green crab is quicker and more dexterous than most crabs, and can open bivalve shells in more ways than other crabs. One adult crab reportedly can eat 40 half-inch, clams each day and can devour crabs as large as itself. Green crabs also prey on numerous other organisms--making these crabs potential competitors for the food sources of native fish and bird species. The green crab has already invaded numerous coastal communities outside of its native range, including South Africa, Australia, and both coasts of North America. An able colonizer and efficient predator, this small shore crab has the potential to significantly alter any ecosystem it invades. It has been blamed for the collapse of the soft-shell clam industry in Maine. The green crab preys voraciously on oysters. They also will prey on juvenile crabs and shellfish as you can see in this video ...

  • Triphyophyllum peltatum the clandestine carnivorous plant (This film participates in the ChloroFilms Video Contest. Please find more information at ) The African liana Triphyophyllum peltatum is the largest of all carnivorous plants (CP) on earth, but strange enough the rarest in cultivation. Due to civil wars and difficult conditions the Western African rainforests are poorly explored and for a long time not very much was known about the hooked leaved lianas of the botanical family Dioncophyllaceae. Thanks to the generous donation of photos from a pioneering project at the University Wuerzburg (Germany) by Dr. Jan Schlauer and Dr. Heiko Rischer, and even first video shots from the habitat in Sierra Leone by Stewart McPherson, we are now able to show the complete live-cycle of the really clandestine carnivorous plant Triphyophyllum peltatum. This film has been edited as a lecture for the European CP Conference 2008 in Mira, Italy.
  • Carnivorous plants-insectivorous plants Carnivorous plants (sometimes called insectivorous plants) are plants that derive some or most of their nutrients (but not energy) from trapping and consuming animals or protozoans, typically insects and other arthropods. Carnivorous plants appear adapted to grow in places where the soil is thin or poor in nutrients, especially nitrogen, such as acidic bogs and rock outcroppings. Charles Darwin wrote the first well-known treatise on carnivorous plants in 1875.[1] True carnivory is thought to have evolved in at least 10 separate lineages of plants, and these are now represented by more than a dozen genera in 5 families. These include about 625 species that attract and trap prey, produce digestive enzymes, and absorb the resulting available nutrients. Additionally, over 300 protocarnivorous plant species in several genera show some but not all these characteristics.
  • Large Japanese Carnivorous Mountain Leech I encountered this animal while hiking in the rain among the mountains near Okabe, Japan (east coast, central Honshu) with my friend and co-worker Takaaki Futami. As we set out to climb a high and rugged peak near the coast, I commented to Takaaki that I hoped we might encounter a giant carnivorous leech on our outing. I was optimistic as my past two encounters with this animal had occurred while hiking on wet and rainy days in similar leaf littered forests. Only one hour into our hike I was delighted to spot the telltale brown and orange markings of a giant leech moving through the leaf litter at my feet. This was my first encounter with one of these animals while it was prowling for food as the previous two leeches I had seen were both busy ingesting giant Japanese earthworms as large as themselves when I found them (please see my YouTube video titled Japan Mountain Leech vs. Giant Earthworm to learn more). Takaaki and I were startled to see just how fast this animal could move when disturbed. It had been my intent to film the animal naturally as it was casually moving along the forest floor, though I quickly found that my only chance to view this animal would be quickly lost lest I carefully try to detain and hold it. I apologize for the poor quality of this video which was shot under bad lighting in a dark forest and by an overly excited cameraman. I never squeezed the leech hard and it is my hope that the animal escaped without damage. The next time I meet this ...
