  • The Cloisters Medieval Museum of Art The Cloisters: Medieval Museum of Art Designed by Charles Collens, the Cloister's museum buildings were constructed by merging various medieval styles. The final building was not based on any one particular style but employed elements from five French abbeys that were reassembled into one structure. The Cloisters was opened to the public in 1938 on Manhattan Island in New York City. The building is used by the Metropolitan Museum of Art to house its medieval artwork collection. The museum and park were donated by John D. Rockefeller Jr. who also donated much of his personal medieval art collection to the Cloisters. The museum is comprised of between 3000 - 5000 medieval works of art from Europe dating from the 9th to the 16th centuries. The Cloisters contains approximately 20 rooms, that include: Gothic halls, 3 chapels, a chapter house, cloister gardens, and various galleries. In addition to its beautiful art collection, the Cloisters also contains many other interesting pieces such as earthenware jugs and vases, furniture, jewellery, books of hours, escutcheons, reliquaries, and tapestries. • AllyConan - FFX: Djose Temple Cloister of Trails This is Ally's strategy on how to get through the Cloister of Trials at Djose Temple. When you enter the room, put the two spheres [left and right of you] in the door in front of you. this will open the door. Now, go to the main room [the one with the wierd symbol on the floor] and put two spheres [doesnt matter what kind] in the two holes to the far right [next to the glyp that you cant reach]. Now make sure that there is a sphere [any kind] in the pillar and push it under the pillar that just appeared. [step on the flashing tile to make the pillar go back to its original state] Take the new Djose sphere [the green glowing one] and stick it in the hole to the right of the door. Now, take the remaining spheres [there should be two] and stick them in the pillar [across from each other]. Push the pillar into the lighting and jump across. Push the NEW pillar in and jump back across. Now take the Djose sphere used to open the door and put it to the left of the door. Now step on the flashing tile to make the pillar come back. Take the two spheres from that [you will have to do it one at a time] and stick them in the two slots that were in the first room [the one that you first entered]. To get the special chest: Instead of going up the elevator, go touch the glyph that is to the left of the flashing tile. [it will be flashing slightly] Take the sphere and go up the elevator. Now go to the circle-like room and puch in all 5 pillars. Now put the sphere in the new pillar and open ...

  • Cloisters Museum directions, from a licensed NYC tourguide. Many people get lost in upper Manhattan because they took the A train to the Cloisters, but got off and walked out into the neighborhood. Follow these easy directions from Tourguide Stan. The trick to finding the Cloisters is that it's above the neighborhood, not part of it. So the first thing you should do is go straight up. 1. Exit the A train at 190th Street. 2. Go upstairs, NOT out the exit tunnel. 3. Find the elevator/lift and take it to the top. 4. Exit the upper lobby, and climb 15 stone steps to the street. 5. Turn right and cross the traffic circle/roundabout, onto Margaret Corbin Drive. Walk five minutes to the Cloisters. You'll know it when you see it: the lone Mediterranean building with stone walls and tile roofs. BTW, you are in Fort Tryon Park, which I think is the highest natural point in Manhattan. You can take in the gardens while walking to the western edge of the park. Clint Eastwood had the motorcycle chase from the 1967 film, Coogan's Bluff, in the park. Stand there and have your photo taken with the Hudson, the GW Bridge, and the NJ palisades in the background. takes you all over New York City by foot, bike, subway and pedicab. Reserve your tours today. TourguideStan

  • The Cloister by Charles Bryant THE CLOISTER by Charles Bryant, read by the Author 'You must not loiter in the cloister now the rain is over.' Out, out, out into the world. Or what must pass for world to us who pass. And what must pass is vision, feeling, memory, comprehension. And with its passing we too pass away who are as grass; as shattered glass, gone with our reflections; into shards. Spiders weave our fragments, webs that hold, an eye where was a limb, breath in place of function, a speaking hand. We sink into the slowly sifting sand and disappear. Fear for an ear, fright for light. Sound subsides in silence wave on sliding wave to cover and subsume in wrack and foam. Do not loiter in this cloister. Sling your hook elsewhere upon the mountainside, however sheer its slopes of vertigo. Your crampons will not hold. You must be air, as free as light as air to do or dare, where's nothing to be done, whether you care or not care; nothing to be done. Rope frays, shoes wear. Clothing in shreds, you fear the mountain's coldness. Beware the sudden avalanche. Beware the yawning gulf. Prepare for the final plunge of the living nightmare, the existential and abrupt abyss, the hiss of ice, glissade into the dark. Now the rain is over; the sky is clear; your mind is clean of concept, the idea of self, the illusion of a suffering, suffered world. Suffused and overarching, bending, reaching, the Rainbow of the Promise lights the sky. It is the last deception. Neither you nor I are real. The cloister fades, its ...
  • Smithsonian Institution Castle: Cloisters Originally, open walkways patterned after medieval cloisters ran along the north sides of both the West Range and East Range. Smithsonian planner Robert Dale Owen believed the cloister was appropriate for the free public college that he hoped the Smithsonian Institution would become. But the open cloisters proved impractical and were closed with the installation of windows shortly after building's construction. In the 1870s, sculpture was moved into the cloisters from the West Range's central space to make room for ethnological exhibits primarily focused on North American Indians.

  • The Bachkovo cloister The monastery was founded by Prince Gregorios Pakourianos or Grigol Bakurianis-dze, prominent Georgian statesman, military commander in Byzantine service, in 1083. He set up a seminary for Georgian youth at the monastery. The curriculum in the first place included Christian religion, as well as mathematics, history, music. A book of the X century, the so-called "Shatberdi Collection" (copied in Shatberdi Monastery, Klarjeti) must have been a student handbook, including the literature an educated man had to know at that time - theology, natural science, philosophy, world history and history of Georgia ("The Convert of Kartli") Since the 13th century, Georgians lost their domination over the monastery, but nevertheless, Georgian traditions were preserved until the beginning of 14th century. However, there's also another version about Pakourianos's origin. Anna Comnena, an 11 c. AD historian, knew Pakourianos personally and stated in Alexiada that he was Armenian by descent but Orthodox by faith. During the time of the Second Bulgarian Empire, Bachkovo Monastery was patronized by Tsar Ivan Alexander, which is evidenced by an image of him on the archs of the ossuary's narthex. Since the 11th century, a school was housed in the monastery. It is believed that the founder of Tarnovo Literary School and last patriarch of the mediaeval Bulgarian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Euthymius, was exiled by the Turks and died in the monastery in the early 15th century. Although the monastery ...

  • The Cloister Hotel Sea Island Georgia Three years in the making, the new Cloister replaces that landmark original, built in 1928. According to the company, the old hotel was never intended to be more than a "friendly little inn" to house prospective real estate investors on the island. But during its surprisingly long life the hotel hosted presidents, kings and queens and all other manner of celebrities, and even carried a Mobil five-star rating for a time. The fourth-generation in his family to operate The Cloister on Sea Island, Jones, who is chairman and chief executive officer of Sea Island Co., is said to have had a hand in virtually every detail of the multi-million dollar masterpiece, from the selection of paintings of marsh and live oaks and period tableaux scattered throughout the 100-room hotel to the choice of wood trim -- mostly heart pine and pecky cypress -- that give the place its warm, long-lived-in feel. An agreement granting Architectural Digest magazine first rights to interior photography led the company to prohibit local news photographers from capturing the inside decor during a media tour of the hotel Thursday. As the September issue of the magazine will undoubtedly show, though, everything about The Cloister on Sea Island is grand in scale, from the richly upholstered overstuffed chairs and high-backed love seats to the dinner-plate sized hydrangea blossoms nestled in decorative planters big enough to hold several small children. The custom-made chandeliers lighting the main lobby with ...
