Fourier series are named after J. Fourier, a French mathematician who was the first to correctly model the diffusion of heat. Fourier series are seen in 2nd-year university mathematics.

  • Mathematica 8: Using Free-Form Input and Wolfram|Alpha Data Mathematica 8 introduces free-form linguistic input—a whole new way to compute. Enter plain English; get immediate results—no syntax required. It's a new entry point into the complete Mathematica workflow, now upgraded with 500 additional functions and 7 application areas—including the world's most advanced statistics capability and state-of-the-art image processing. Mathematica 8 dramatically expands data access options by integrating Wolfram|Alpha. Drawing on Wolfram|Alpha's vast collection of computable data across hundreds of fields, Mathematica 8 can import data in many formats—as a single result in numeric or table form, as a Wolfram|Alpha-style presentation of all available results for an entity, or embedded into a line of input for immediate computation. Mathematica 8 also features built-in programmatic access to the Wolfram|Alpha API, which allows the selection of specific Wolfram|Alpha results or output formats. • Facebook's new energy efficient data center Cloud technologies power some of Internet's most well-known sites—Picasa, Gmail, Facebook and Zynga, just to name a few—and cloud companies are striving to make the computer processing behind these sites as energy efficient as possible. With that in mind, Facebook, Dell, HP, Rackspace, Skype, Zynga and others have teamed together to form the Open Compute Project to share best practices for making more energy efficient and economical data centers. To kick-start the project, Facebook unveiled its innovative new data center and contributed the specifications and designs to Open Compute. "Cloud companies are working hard to become more and more energy efficient...[and] this is a big step forward today in having computing be more and more green," explains Graham Weston, Chairman of Rackspace. A small team of Facebook engineers has been working on the project for two years. They custom designed the software, servers and data center from the ground up. One of the most significant features of the facility was that Facebook eliminated the centralized UPS system found in most data centers. "In a typical data center, you're taking utility voltage, you're transforming it, you're bringing it into the data center and you're distributing it to your servers," explains Tom Furlong, Director of Site Operations at Facebook. "There are some intermediary steps there with a UPS system and with energy transformations that occur that cost you money and energy—between about 11% and 17%. In our ...

  • Interactive Indirect Illumination Using Voxel Cone Tracing We present a novel algorithm to compute indirect lighting in real-time that avoids costly precomputation steps and is not restricted to low frequency illumination. It is based on a hierarchical voxel octree representation generated and updated on-the-fly from a regular scene mesh coupled with an approximate voxel cone tracing that allows a fast estimation of the visibility and incoming energy. Our approach can manage two light bounces for both Lambertian and Glossy materials at interactive framerates (25-70FPS). It exhibits an almost scene-independent performance thanks to an interactive octree voxelization scheme, hereby allowing for complex scenes and dynamic content. This technique was presented at Pacific Graphics 2011 and published in CGF: www.icare3 More info in our I3D2011 Poster: maverick.inria.fr Our Siggraph 2011 presentation: maverick.inria.fr

  • ClearPath: Highly Parallel Collision Avoidance for Multi-agent Simulation We present a new local collision avoidance algorithm between multiple agents for real-time simulations. Our approach extends the notion of velocity obstacles from robotics and formulates the conditions for collision free navigation as a quadratic optimization problem. We use a discrete optimization method to efficiently compute the motion of each agent. This resulting algorithm can be parallelized by exploiting data-parallelism and thread-level parallelism. The overall approach, ClearPath, is general and can robustly handle dense scenarios with tens or hundreds of thousands of heterogeneous agents in a few milliseconds. As compared to prior collision avoidance algorithms, we observe more than an order of magnitude performance improvement [Stephen. J. Guy, Jatin Chhugani, Changkyu Kim, Nadathur Satish, Ming C. Lin, Dinesh Manocha, and Pradeep Dubey]. gamma.cs.unc.edu
