  • Iowa tornadoes damage Corn Belt Power Cooperative's system 4-9-2011 Numerous tornadoes tore through the western part of the Corn Belt Power system the evening of Saturday, April 9, 2011, ripping apart buildings and snarling trees, tin and power lines into mangled messes. Remarkably, there was no loss of life and few serious injuries were reported. The National Weather Service confirmed a total of 10 tornadoes in five counties. One tornado was classified as an EF-3 with winds up to 165 mph. The Early and Odebolt areas in Sac County suffered losses from a pair of tornadoes, one an EF3. The town of Mapleton in Monona County was hit especially hard, with 60 percent of the town destroyed or damaged. At least two tornadoes tore through the countryside in Pocahontas County. There, homes were leveled and farm machinery destroyed. Damage totals were not immediately known, but officials said it would easily be in the millions. Gov. Terry Branstad declared both Monona and Pocahontas counties disaster areas. Corn Belt Power Cooperative experienced transmission and substation damage in Sac, Buena Vista and Pocahontas counties due to the storm. According to Dan Watnem, transmission superintendent, Corn Belt Power lost nearly 50 transmission poles, sustaining more than 1 million dollars in damages. Poles were downed in the Miles Nelsen tap east of highway 71, a section of transmission line east of the Storm Lake Substation, the Dover dual circuit west of Pocahontas, the Dover to Feldman and Pocahontas to Dover lines, and in a five-mile stretch northeast ...

(8 Parts) The Consumer's Cooperatives of Berkeley began in the 1930's, during the Great Depression, helping people to get better value on food, merchandise and gas purchases by buying together. By the late 1970's the Berkeley Co-Op's had pioneered food labeling, price comparison labeling, and nutrition awareness (eg sugar levels in kid's serials.) Parents could shop at Co-op stores and leave their children at the Co-op's popular "Kiddie Corral" where a dedicated staff kept them busy with music, storytelling and dance, sparing mother's and father's an endless stream of "can we get that?" Not everything was peaches and cream, however; racism existed in spite of advances in hiring African-American, Japanese (post WWII) and other minorities. Women still faced discrimination, and workers had to fight for representation. As a consumer cooperative (not to be confused with a worker cooperative) the Co-op stores were still run by (rather uptight) managers as a hierarchal system. Eventually they pushed the Co-op's into over-expansion and, finally failure (See John Curl's discussion in Pt 6.) In Berkeley, the sites of Andronico's onTelegraph Ave, Shattuck Ave, University Ave, and Whole Foods on Ashby Ave, were once all Co-op Stores. Ironically, during the same period ...

  • Cooperatives This is a story about capitalism and cooperatives. It's also a story about how cooperatives will defeat capitalism, causing it to hide in a deep, dark hole where cooperatives will eat what capitalism leaves behind. Or, alternatively, you can look at these websites to get more info. National Coop Business Alliance: www.ncba.coop National Association of Housing Coops: US Federation of Worker Coops: www.usworker.coop Additional note: cooperatives are magnificent and work to give power back to the people--but sometimes, coops, like corporations, can get too successful and expansive and lose their coop morals. There is a certain point when we have to ask ourselves whether the coop model can actually replace capitalism... and whether that is even the point. When do coops become too big for their own good and how do we carry out the Rochdale Principles to the fullest of its original intentions?

Our panel -- with academic, commercial, and school of hard knocks experience -- will frame the demonstrated solutions, numerous pieces of the puzzle that we as a society need to put together. Important pieces that will be presented here include the successful strategies employed in the worker cooperative networks/alliances of Mondragon, Ohio, and the San Francisco Bay Area, Permaculture design strategies implemented even in harsh climate zones, Denmark's national industrial symbiosis program, non-parasitic capitalization of non ...
