  • Redbells in Winter Looking at the beautiful Kalanchoe redbells in the garden, today. I don't know what specific type of Kalanchoe they are, but they grow in these parts, and I make the most of them around the estate, as they are so very beautiful, and the native birds like to extract nectar from the flowers. These redbells have flowers at several times of year, but the winter display is often burnt back, and destroyed, by heavy frosts. But that has not been the case, so far, this year; and there is now this pretty flaming red display; and the honeyeaters are enjoying it all immensely. Also, it is worth noting that the Kalanchoes planted--and in sunny aspects--under or nearby large evergreen trees are less likely to be burnt by the frosts. These Kalanchoe redbells are very drought-hardy but, of course, will grow faster with some extra summer water. To propagate them, you simply break off a good-sized piece, and plant it out, in situ, where you want it. Or, else, you can plant them in pots, of course. In all, a very useful, beautiful, and drought-hardy plant. And the birds like them, too. (Oh, and by the way, these plants are POISON, so don't eat them!) ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
