The phenomenon was discovered in 1809 by the professor of Moscow University, Ferdinand Friedrich Reiss.There are two main varieties of electrophoresis. In cataphoresis the processed surface has a negative electric charge, ie it is connected to a negative contact of the current source. In anaphoresis the surface charge is positive.Electrophoresis is widely used in medicine. It is often called a heating procedure as there is a feeling of light burning caused by the passage of an electric current.A medical substance is applied on the pads which go under the electrodes. The substance penetrates into the body through skin or mucous membranes under the influence of electric field. It influences physiological and pathological processes directly in the place where it is introduced. The electric current also has a neuroreflex and humoral effect.Medical electrophoresis has several main advantages. It is possible to introduce a small but significantly effective dosage of the active substance without saturating lymph, blood, and other internal environments. It is possible to accumulate the substance and also form a depot.   • SDJA AP Biology DNA Lab Professor Curt Wittenberg, a molecular geneticist at Scripps Research Institute and an SDJA parent, came in to do a lab with the students. They separated pieces of DNA using gel electrophoresis. The students learned how to calculate the sizes of DNA fragments based on the distances that they travel in the gel. It was a great opportunity for the kids to see and perform a sophisticated lab technique that is used in crime scene investigations, paternity tests, medicine, and genetic research.

  • 4.4.2 Gel Electrophoresis 4.4.2 State that, in gel electrophoresis, fragments of DNA move in an electric field and are separated according to their size. In Gel Electrophoresis the DNA is placed in wells at one end of the agarose gel. The wells are labelled according whether they contain a 'Standard' (DNA fragments of known size) and a crime scene (CS) with suspects (1, 2 etc) for example. The Agarose gel is then put into an electrophoresis chamber with the DNA samples closest the to negative pole. This is because DNA as a molecule is slightly negatively charged and therefore will move towards the positive pole when placed in an electric field. The samples are separated by size with the largest DNA fragments remaining closest to the wells and the smallest DNA fragments migrating furthest away from the wells.
