  • Philippine traditional instrument- Kudyapi The kudyapi, a Philippine two-stringed, fretted boat-lute, is the only stringed instrument among the Maguindanaon. It is four to six feet long with nine frets made of hardened beeswax. The instrument is carved out of solid soft wood such as from the jackfruit tree. For the Maguindanaon, it is possible to arrange the beeswax frets into different patterns resulting in different scales for the instrument. Two of the most common are binalig, a style in imitation of the kulintang, and dinaladay, a style used for teaching.

This the first rehearsal of Diwa de Leon (arranger, hegalong), UP Concert Chorus and Umalahukan Ensemble for the finale number of the Aliw Awards 2008. The sound recording was done using only a video camera so expect the sound to be unbalanced. The minus one BGM was played with a small CD player so the timing might be off a bit because we can't hear it properly during the rehearsal. The rehearsal was held at UP Diliman College of Music, my alma mater. I embedded the midi minus one BMG post-editing for a clearer sound. I'm the guy in brown shirt standing at the back of everyone else. Live instruments used by Umalahukan are the kulintang (embossed gong xylphone), gabbang (bamboo xylophone), agong (bass gong), gandingan (tenor gong), dabakan (war drum), and rainstick.

Ryan has played succeful Golden Shelltoes live shows with Digital Underground, Das EFX, Tom Greene, Canibus, Devin The Dude, Bun B, Gift Of Gab, Bang Data, The Jazz Mafia, Z man from One Block Radius, Raw Deluxe, Felonius, Zeph and Azeem, Living Legends (Various groups and solo acts), Broun Felinis, Oakland Faders, Stymie and the Pimp Jones Love Orchestra, Lunar Heights, Crown City Rockers, Marc Stretch and many more SF Bay Area greats.
