  • Lent, a sea of Gods Mercy~ relaxing chant(with instrumentation) For the Lord, the Holy One of Israel, said, In quiet and rest is your salvation: peace and hope are your strength- Isaiah 30:15 MADE for FULL SCREEN viewing. Lent, A Sea of God's Mercy by Catherine Doherty I was praying and it came to me that Lent is a sort of sea of God's mercy. In my imagination Lent was warm and quiet and inviting for us to swim in. If we did swim in it, we would be not only refreshed but cleansed, for God's mercy cleanses as nothing else does. Then I thought of our reticence. I don't know if it is reticence or fear to really plunge into God's mercy. We really want to be washed clean; we want to be forgiven. But these desires meet with something else inside. I say to myself that if I do enter into the sea of mercy I will be healed, and then I will be bound to practice what Christ preaches, his law of love, which is painful, so terribly painful. There by that sea I stand and think: If I seek mercy I have to dish out mercy; I have to be merciful to others. What does it mean to be merciful to others? It means to open my own heart, like a little sea, for people to swim in. If we stand before God's mercy and drink of it, it will mean that the Our Father is a reality, and not just a prayer that I say. "Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come..." We like that part and have no problem saying it. But then we come to: "Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.... Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against ...

  • Gioachino Rossini - La donna del lago (1819) - "Qual pena in me gia desta" I just couldn't resist uploading this excellent rendition of the present dramatically and musically breathtaking confrontation from Rossini's "La donna del lago". The piece is almost a forerunner of the equally elaborate terzettone from the composer's own "Maometto II". Although my first upload of the piece ( presented only the terzet itself, the scene actually opens with a long and stirring duet for Elena & Uberto. The structure is classical: two identical opening verses give both protagonists an opportunity to express their conflicting emotions (Elena demanding her suitor to forget her, Uberto acclaiming that nothing can make him forget her beauty), while the andante allows the composer to stop time just for a moment for a meltingly beautiful duettino. However, Rossini's music is incredibly viable, as well as handsome, challenging the idiom the composer himself created: the opening verses are richly ornamented yet in both cases the music relates the conflict vividly (the tenor's defiant answer rightly being even more passionate than the soprano's more subdued appeal); the andante, highlighted by a number of orchestral effects (in particular, Uberto's entrances, accompanied by string tremolos, disrupt the peacefulness of the melody, perfectly illustrating the torment the character feels, though in the end he adds his voice to the soprano's sublime solo, helped by wonderfully long wind lines) is as attractive as any love duet Rossini has written in his ...

Command Thou an angel of peace to guard our goings out and our comings in unto every good work, that, being obedient and pleasing [unto Thee] with him, we may receive the perfect communion of Thine all pure Mysteries. • Pope John-Paul II~To the youth of Chile (April 2, 1987) Chile,April 2, 1987/John Paul II's visit to Chile April 1-6, 1987, had a broader purpose, of course, than to tackle human rights issues. But already on the flight to South America, on March 31 he asserted that working for justice and human rights was an essential part of the Church's mission. He rejected the position of political figures like [President Augusto] Pinochet who tell bishops that they should spend all their time praying, and stay out of politics. /Preaching a gospel of unity rather than one that would lock groups into permanent confrontation, the pope insisted repeatedly on reconciliation and nonviolence. He brought this message to an enormous youth meeting held in the Nahonal Stadium, an infamous place of torture, death and detention for thousands of Chileans after the 1973 coup. Without ignoring the "sadness" of the place and carefully urging the youth "not to remain indifferent in the face of injustice," he left them with an important caution: "Do not let yourself be seduced by violence and the thousand reasons which appear to justify it." The Church rejects "all ideologies which proclaim violence and hate as means to obtain justice." www.vatican.va

  • Chant Cistercian 1143 ad The Order of Cistercians (O.Cist. Latin: Ordo Cisterciensis /The term Cistercian (French Cistercien), derives from Cistercium,[1] the Latin name for the village of Cîteaux, near Dijon in eastern France. It was in this village that a group of Benedictine monks from the monastery of Molesme founded Cîteaux Abbey in 1098, with the goal of following more closely the Rule of Saint Benedict. The best known of them were Robert of Molesme, Alberic of Citeaux and the English monk Stephen Harding, who were the first three abbots. Bernard of Clairvaux entered the monastery in the early 1110s with 30 companions and helped the rapid proliferation of the order. By the end of the 12th century, the order had spread throughout France and into England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Eastern Europe. The keynote of Cistercian life was a return to literal observance of the Rule of St Benedict. Rejecting the developments the Benedictines had undergone, the monks tried to replicate monastic life exactly as it had been in Saint Benedict's time; indeed in various points they went beyond it in austerity. The most striking feature in the reform was the return to manual labour, especially field-work, a special characteristic of Cistercian life.

  • Monastero di San Benedetto, Norcia (2007) founded in Rome 1998, then a Monastic foundation by American Brothers, in the Birthplace of Saints Benedict and Scholastica Norcia (Nursia), Italy.founded on First Vespers of the First Sunday of Advent, in the Jubilee Year 2000. "Since then we've tripled in size, and we're starting to run out of room..." currently 14 young, mostly American Monks. -The Monastero di San Benedetto in Norcia is unique for two reasons: 1.It was founded from scratch in 1998 without being conditioned by previous historical circumstances. 2.It is located at the birthplace of St. Benedict, and therefore is in a privileged position to draw from the sources of Benedictine spirituality, namely the Rule of St. Benedict as well as the pre-Benedictine monastic tradition. The Vatican II document on Religious Life, Perfectae Caritatis, urges religious to return to the spirit of the founder, and that's what we are trying to do. What that means, practically speaking, is that we pray the full monastic Office as laid out in the Rule. We observe the monastic fast and we have retained the patrimony of Gregorian chant. In addition, the Holy See has entrusted us with the special apostolate of celebrating the Eucharist in both forms (in utroque usu), that is, the Ordinary Form and the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite,(which being the Traditional Latin mass, being our regular Conventual Liturgy). We do all kinds of work (manual, clerical and intellectual) including some limited apostolic work ...
  • The Recruits Take their Oath of Loyalty-Swiss Gaurds-2011 May 6th: just 10 minutes of the 1 1/2 hour ceremony.34 new gaurds/more info at www.vatican.va - "I swear I will faithfully, loyally and honourably serve the Supreme Pontiff Pope Benedict XVI and his legitimate successors, and also dedicate myself to them with all my strength, sacrificing if necessary also my life to defend them. I assume this same commitment with regard to the Sacred College of Cardinals whenever the See is vacant. Furthermore I promise to the Commanding Captain and my other superiors, respect, fidelity and obedience. This I swear! May God and our Holy Patrons assist me!" Then one by one the new recruits are called by name. Each one advances alone, and with his left hand he grasps the Guarďs standard, holding high his right hand with three fingers open, as a symbol of the Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and he confirms the oath: "I, . . ., swear I will observe faithfully, loyally and honourably all that has now been read out to me! May God and his saints assist me!" These saints included especially the Guard's Patrons, St. Martin (November 11th), St. Sebastian (January 20th), and St. Niklaus von Flüe, "Defensor Pacis et pater patriae" (September 25th).

  • Here is Peter... archeological proofs for St. Peters Basilica being built over the tomb of the Holy Apostle. "St Peter's primary beauty is to be looked for in its historical context. It is surely found in the living continuity of Christian worship on this site, the sublimity of symbolism, and the everlasting thanksgiving it renders to the Prince of the Apostles, the uncouth fisherman from Galilee, one of the most fully human mortals who has ever walked the earth. Catholics are no freer from frailties than the rest of mankind. No wonder they like to petition Peter to intercede with the Almighty on their behalf and that of their friends in the great community of the faithful. They have done so since time immemorial. 'Petrus roga Christus Iesus pro sanctis hominibus Chrestianis ad corpus tuum' - 'Peter, pray to Christ Jesus for the holy Christian men buried near your body'. This prayer was found by Pope Pius XII's archaeological excavators ,scratched beside the Apostle's shrine by a barely literate pilgrim, at some unknown date, but before the first stone of Constantine's basilica was even laid."
