IMO, ps2 should just use greyscale heights after this for more ability. Anim8or shows it can look no different and it uses alot less computaiton (NM = 3 planes of data, HM = 1 plane which is neibor relient based). It doesn't replace or add new normals, only it computes the gradient of a height field. This gives you something that is usually called "deltas", which in lamens terms, will compare it's own point value to light orientation. The normals are simply perturbed as ps2 can do easily. It also uses 1-2 real additional pass next to 2-4. One I couldn't do is the AA. The thing about this, is that it's sadly misheard from the fact that it's slow to implement, due to requiring poly sorting. You'll see Soul Reaver 2, GT3, GT4 and Baulder's Gate use the hardwired AA out of the box, at a perfect 60fps throughout (X2 quality). Not just this, there's also a cheap emulation of 4xAA that any console can do. This is a multi-pass effect the GS/GPU performs. Using Multi-pass, the GS/GPU uses 4 2d Render [display image] 2 Texture passes where each pixel is shifted in offset and alpha. Info is in one of the pdf links. Another fact is that two different PDFs (third and first party), an article at gamasutra (about ubisoft and ps2gl), and certain developers note that PS2 has 2 units per pass (UV and ST). I just didn't feel like going back into the scene to edit it and watch it re-render for another 3 hours. And I thought it was funny.) -The "sunset" is a simple gradient. I'm guessing that this comes from some of the quality cutbacks I had to make to make this video render within a survivable amount of time.   • OpenCL Galaxies Demo This is the Galaxies Demo running in OpenCL on a Quad Core 2.8GHz Mac Pro with 8800GT (rendered in OpenGL using my 7600GT since there were blank frames in the recorded video when I rendered it on the 8800GT). This is done in real time at 30 FPS. It shows around 160 Gflops, but I believe that's due to it not wanting to go above 30 FPS. In the 32000 star version, it does 195 Gflops (but only 9 FPS). In both cases, it's doing about 21 ops per star per star per update. For example: 21 * 16000 * 16000 * 30 = 161 Gflops 21 * 32000 * 32000 * 9 = 193 Gflops. Supposedly the GTX285 can get 400 Gflops. The song is "Space Debris" - a MOD I've had for about 15 years. I thought it was fitting.

  • Rube Goldberg Machine Animation This is an animation of a Rube Goldberg machine done in Blender. Info: -This video took about 2 minutes of dual-core processor time at about 2.25 GHz (about 18 GFLOPS for my processor) to compute the physics. -It took almost 13 hours of processor time to render the video. -This was done all in Blender. -The OSA (Oversampling) is set to 5. -This was rendered at 1920 by 1080. -The first frame is frame 1. The last is 1030. -The physics were computed at 30 fps. The video plays at 20 fps, so everything is 2/3 the speed that it should be. Funny things to notice: -The camera moves very quickly sometimes. This is partially because I'm new to blender, and partially because the "focus" of the machine sometimes changes rapidly. -The dominoes bounce at the right angle turn in the air. I'm not sure why. It probably has something to do with the angle and speed of impact. -The second-to-last big metal ball hovers above the tracks momentarily, and then goes through the tracks at the bottom of the tracks. I'm not sure why this happened either. -The metal rod that pushes the last metal sphere seems to jump around. I'm also not sure why. (If you have any explanations, feel free to comment!) According to my calculations, the steel ball should have a mass of 800 to be accurate, but oh, well. -This video took about 6 hours of processor time at about 2.25 GHz (about 9 GFLOPS) -I used JBullet for physics, Sunflow for 3D rendering and some other software to change it into a video (It was all done in Java 1.6) Things to notice: -You can see the shockwave from the steel ball hitting travel quickly through the "cube" -You can see the ping pong balls bounce off of the back wall -You can see that the back wall's lighting is in huge steps. This is because I didn't set the anti aliasing to be picky enough :) Feel free to comment and I may reply if I notice the comment :) I do not own JBullet or Sunflow or have the rights to say that they are mine, but they are open source. I am not the maker of either of these. All I did was make a program that added a thousand and one spheres (Don't forget the steel one!) and 2 walls to the scene. I also made the program connect to the Sunflow renderer. (Ok, I did some other stuff, too... but not the physics engine or the rendering engine.) And this doesn't mean that I'm doing anything illegal, it just means that I'm trying to give credit to software that was vital to this video.
