  • Meeting the Homeowner Back in New Orleans, Kevin meets homeowner Rashida Ferdinand and her architect Rick Fifield for a look at the plans and model of the proposed work to her shotgun single. The plan calls for a camelback addition that will house a master suite, and also a new family room with back and side porches to take advantage of the cool river breezes. As demolition begins inside, builder Carl Hithe shows master carpenter Norm Abram how the house was originally constructed from dismantled bargeboards taken from vessels that once traveled down the Mississippi. At Musicians Village, Kevin meets Executive Director Jim Pate to see how Habitat for Humanitys houses are constructed post-Katrina, starting with an extensive foundation system that includes 35-foot deep pilings tied into a robust footing system. As work progresses at Rashidas house, the discovery of toxic mold is a setback, until mold remediation expert Dr. Eric Griggs arrives to begin a whole-house remediation and prevention program for the old part of the house.

  • Police Brutality: Cop Shoots Homeowner 6 Times Then Covers Up. 911 CALL PHOENIX (CN) - A Phoenix police officer shot Tony Arambula six times in the back during a 911 home-invasion call, and the 911 tape recorded the officer's partner saying, "That's all right. Don't worry about it. I got your back. ... We clear?" The officers were not aware that the 911 call was still recording as they spoke about covering up the shooting. In their complaint in Maricopa County Court, Anthony and Lesley Arambula say an armed intruder "crashed through the front window" of their home on Sept. 17, 2008 and ran into one of their son's bedrooms. Anthony, worried about his son who was still in his bedroom, says he "held the intruder calmly at gunpoint" and called 911. Phoenix Police officers already in the neighborhood heard the crash of the Arambulas' window. When they approached the house, Lesley says, she told Sgt. Sean Coutts that her husband was inside holding the intruder at gunpoint. Lesley says Coutts failed to pass on that information to the two other officers. Inside the house, the Arambulas say, Officer Brian Lilly shot Anthony six times in the back while he was still on the phone with the 911 operator - twice when he was on the ground. The officers ran into the bedroom after Anthony told them, "You just killed ... you just killed the homeowner. The bad guy is in there." The complaint states that Officer Lilly "admitted that it was only after Tony was laying, bullet-ridden, on the ground that he assessed the situation. The 911 tape continued to record ...

  • Real Estate Today: Best Homeowners Insurance in Florida (Part 2 of 3) - Koolik Group Realty Video In this episode of Real Estate Today with Elliot Koolik of Koolik Group Realty, we will join Lisa Pacillo, President of All Risk Insurance Group and licensed insurance broker, in deciding how to choose the best homeowners insurance policy in Florida. Lisa will explain Citizens homeowners insurance in Florida and how it compares to private insurance companies. Citizens homeowners insurance can not deny anyone in Florida but is largely a last resort insurer. Independent agents and brokers can offer more options if you are purchasing a home or changing insurance companies because of dropped coverage or increased premiums. Premiums can be reduced by increasing deductibles. For damages caused by anything other than a hurricane, such as a pipe breaking or roof collapse, there is the all other peril deductible, which can be set at $500, $1000 or $2500. Hurricane deductibles are set at 2%, 5% and 10% of the dwelling amount. There are also discounts available for homes with storm shutters, roof mitigation certificates, alarm systems, homes in gated communities and condos with central sprinkler systems.
