  • Fullbridge IGBT 555 flyback driver. I ran 40 volts input on the first clip, and 80 on the second. When i ran 80 volts it was around 800-1000 watts. I was accidentally running 35% duty cycle, at 27khz. Later, i increased duty cycle to 45% and frequency to around 34khz, and i was pulling 1.4kw. The flyback was hot after both of these runs. H-bridge of 80 amp IGBTs, courtesy of pslawinski. Regulated 12 volt source, and the oscillator is a 555, and it drives the ucc37322/321 ucc pair that drives the GDT through a 500nf DC blocking capacitor.

  • Drsstc driver testing, 250 amps primary current. Just some tinkering with the OCD and i messed with the interrupter frequency (though the on time was set at 60us). The waveform displayed is the primary current, each volt measured equals 10 amps on the primary measured with a CT and burden resistor. The scope was set at 10v/div, so about 250 amps at the max. The IGBTs don't get hot, and the 1/4 inch primary is already getting above room temp... :D It was running about 180Khz. At one point i inserted a coffee can as a load. I also have this little toy i got from rrolison. It is an inductor (that acts like the drsstc secondary) and a fullwave rectifier of ultrafast diodes, and a 1uf smoothing cap. The LED lights from a foot or more away. Just some TO-3P IGBTs in a fullbridge. Sparks soon, hopefully!

  • SISG This is probably one of most unique projects I had the privilege of participating in. This was the Sidac-IGBT Spark gap tesla coil. Designed by engineer Terry Fritz (in his free time for fun) it employed multiple PC boards of components which (because of the series SIDACs) had a certain threshold before which the IGBTs would not conduct. Therefore, you would design your TC circuit as normal, and simply gang up as many 900v SISG segements as you needed to sufficiently charge your cap bank. At the time (sometime in 2006) many scoffed at this. I was one of the first hand full of people in the world after Terry to get this to work successfully. It's a tough and reliable replacement for the old spark gap, and I guess it's only drawback would be that (unlike other SMPS based solid state TC designs) you still have to deal with heavy transformer iron. But it was a fun project to work on, and gave my handheld digital oscilloscope a workout too!

  • Induction Heater Melting Stuff Due to scepticism about my home made induction heater by some people. I thought I would add another video. This updated power supply uses a normal half bridge igbt inverter with a conventional induction heating setup. The heater melts a 50p coin and a crome vanadium steel allen-key socket. For those interested...The frequency lock is achieved using work coil current feedback to a free running oscillator which drived the two hgtg20n60a4d igbts through an ir2184 drive chip. The secret to melting steel at low power is to use less turns on the work coil. Molten steel has a much higher resistance than cold steel and requires less turns to couple energy to efficiently. The current used here was 13 amps at 240v (3.1kw). Peak igbt current was 50 amps at 120 khz. The capacitors are the only critical component- i used celem csp150/200 's 2 x 1.6uf

There's a brakes and air-con/pwr steering test, Nathan talks about water boilers used to cool engine bays in cold climate countries that could be used for cabin heating in an EV, I talk a bit about IGBTs and Nathan does a tacho send test using an IGBT. Sooner or later there may be motor speed controllers custom designed for EVs that use IGBTs. These things have freewheeling diodes, and from my limited understanding that means they're there to stop reverse current voltage spikes across the inductive load. When the current flow to an inductor is suddenly interrupted, the inductor attempts to maintain the current by reversing polarity and ramping up the voltage to maintain the flyback. Without the diode the voltage can go high enough to damage the IGBT. The diode allows the reverse current to flow through it and dissipate. IGBTs could be cool things to use for 'electric boost' -just like a turbo boost. From the video you can also see the BMS installed - these will be sprayed with conformal coating for protection.   • first tests of my ZVS supplied by direct european wallsocket (230V) In the video you can see my ZVS circuit which was originally ideated by Vladimiro Mazzilli. I did some changes on the values of components and i added a simple driver circuit for driving the gates of the 1200V IGBTs. Due to sometimes blowing the fuse i finally built a reducer of the inrush current. So after power on the 15V voltage for the driver circuitry appears. Then with first relay the main voltage is switched on but it's reduced by a very simple inrush current reducer yet, until the second relay shorts this protection. After that the whole circuit is directly connected with the 230V wallsocket voltage. Arcs really look like two or more parallel microwave oven transformers. I calculated the theoretically possible output power, which is around 7kW. If you are interested in these calculations, please ask me. The output power in this video is at maximum at ~1-1.5kW due to the large air gap yet. Please note: the two IGBT modules on the big heatsink only perform the rectification of the input AC voltage. I DONT use them for the main SMPS circuitry.
