  • 4. Portfolio Diversification and Supporting Financial Institutions (CAPM Model) Financial Markets (ECON 252) Portfolio diversification is the most fundamental concept of risk management. The allocation of financial resources in stocks, bonds, riskless, assets, oil and other assets determine the expected return and risk of a portfolio. Taking account of covariances and expected returns, investors can create a diversified portfolio that maximizes expected return for a given level of risk. An important mission of financial institutions is to provide portfolio-diversification services. • Lori and Reba Schappell - Conjoined Twins Lori and George Schappell, born September 18, 1961 in Reading, Pennsylvania, are American entertainers. George Schapell was born Dori Schapell, and was known for several years as Reba Schapell. Born as Lori and Dori Schappell, the sisters are craniopagus conjoined twins, joined at the head and sharing 30% of their brain matter, but having very different personalities and living, insofar as possible, individual lives. As a mark of individuality, and disliking the fact that their names rhymed, Dori changed her name to Reba. By 2007 she was preferring to be known as George. Lori and George spent the first twenty-four years of their lives living in an institution in Reading in which the majority of inmates suffered severe intellectual disability. Although neither is intellectually disabled, George's condition required special care. A court decision was made that their parents would be unable to care for them properly and they were removed and institutionalized. In the 1960s there were few hospital institutions for those people who had special needs that were unusual. In order that they might be placed in the institution, they were diagnosed as suffering from intellectual disability. When they reached adulthood, George, with the help of Ginny Thornburgh, wife of a former Governor of Pennsylvania, fought to have this diagnosis overturned and Lori and George were able to go to college. • The Power of Paper One of the most common ways government and corporate institutions rob, cheat and control us is with something called "default contracts". Through our "silence" they presume authority to own us, our property, our wealth and our privacy. Sadly, our courts and statutes actually support this due to some odd contents of the Uniform Commercial Code. This video demonstrates one way to remedy those unintended "obligations." Learn more about this by going to and entering the search phrase "How to write an affidavit." Freedom-oriented videos on YouTube tend to attract a lot of anonymous institutional and government "boiler room" impostors, disruptors and agitators. These sponsored social network terrorists use hate speech, profanity, racism, name-calling and contrived insults to destroy and marginalize intellectual discussions about freedom on social networks. Who would be opposed to individual empowerment and freedom? The institutions who take and thrive on the earnings and productivity of private individuals and taxpayers. Those institutions are also the ones with the resources to conduct those boiler room operations. For that reason comments on this video are screened. Those who would call that "censorship" are welcome to create their own YouTube pages and be as un"censored" as they wish. This video was not produced by legal experts or professional advisers. It is layman's opinion intended only to provoke thought. Use these principals at your own risk.
  • Vivaldi's Women (Part one) The documentary "Vivaldi's Women" on BBC Four presented the story of an extraordinary creative partnership between one of history's great composers -- Antonio Vivaldi -- and an all-female orchestra and choir. In the early 18th century, Father Antonio Vivaldi was a violin teacher, musical director, musical instrument procurer and in-house composer for a Venetian institution called La Pietà, a home for children who had been abandoned at birth. The institution had its own all-female orchestra and choir who provided sacred "entertainment" in the church for the visiting "Grand Tourists". The unique creative relationship that Vivaldi formed with these women resulted in what many believe to be one of the finest performing groups of all time. The documentary also reveals the personal stories of this unique community of female musicians and the full extent of Vivaldi's relationship with the institution. During five days in November 2005 Schola Pietatis Antonio Vivaldi, directed by Richard Vendome, recorded and filmed three different programmes for the BBC on location at La Pietà. The choir of 18 past and present members of Oxford Girls' Choir (aged 14-33), together with seven older ladies, replicated Vivaldi's choir in size, age and vocal range, the lowest voices can singing down to bottom F on the bass stave! Antonio Vivaldi, as well as being a composer, worked at the Ospedale della Pietà for much of the first half of the 18th century. This was one of four such institutions in ...

The very next morning, he was ready with a masterpiece which went on to be reckoned as AMU Tarana after being sung at the Strachey Hall for the first time. What a tribute from a disciple to his ...
  • Chase Credit Card Ripoff Scam (part 2) In this second installment, I continue my discussion about how corrupt financial institutions like Chase Bank need to be boycotted. I also recommend not using Visa and Mastercard checking cards, even when the money exists in your checking account. Even though this doesn't incur interest on you, the merchant has to pay anywhere from 2-4 percent to that financial institution. Mom & pop stores are up to their eyeballs in this financial crap, and every time I go to a diner or low-cost store, I use cash or check, as well as reusable shopping bags. But the main thing is to put a monkey wrench is this creepy financial system we have all become so accustomed to accepting. Please make 2009 the year of paying down debt and saying "screw you" to these parasitic institutions. And if you must default on just one credit card, let it be your Chase Card. After all, they have no compassion on you, right? You're just returning the favor. Please feel free to leave your comments and do as much research as you can on this subject.
  • 13. Banking: Successes and Failures Financial Markets (ECON 252) Banks, which were first created in primitive form by goldsmiths hundreds of years ago, have evolved into central economic institutions that manage the allocation of resources, channel information about productive activities, and offer the public convenient investment vehicles. Although there are several types of banking institutions, including credit unions and Saving and Loan Associations, commercial banks are the largest and most important in the banking system. Banks are designed to address three significant problems in capital markets: adverse selection, moral hazard, and liquidity. Banks make money by borrowing long and lending short and use fractional reserves to lend more funds than are deposited. History has seen numerous problems in banks, including bank runs and insolvency. Government support and regulation, such as those implemented via the Basel Accord, as well as rating agencies help to ensure that investors trust the banks with which they have relations. • Time for Change (Bregtje van der Haak, VPRO Backlight 2010) Meet the new revolutionaries of the Do-It-Yourself cultures in Barcelona, Tallin and Jakarta. They are modern day heroes. They do not wait for political parties or institutions to change their world; they simply do it themselves, by creating new local currencies, by working in social networks or by simply robbing the banks and redistributing their money. The world economy is in crisis and public trust in financial institutions has hit rock bottom. As commercial banks were bailed out with billions of taxpayers money and continued to practice their old vices, many people lost faith in bank managers and politicians. They got angry at the speculative financial system that brings extreme wealth to a few and instability and unemployment to many. Could this dissatisfaction lead to social change? Can we imagine viable alternatives? Backlight goes on a worldwide search, with sociologist Manuel Castells and philosopher Peter Sloterdijk.
  • 5. Insurance: The Archetypal Risk Management Institution Financial Markets (ECON 252) Insurance provides significant risk management to a broad public, and is an essential tool for promoting human welfare. By pooling large numbers of independent or low-correlated risks, insurance providers can minimize overall risk. The risk management is tailored to individual circumstances and reflects centuries of insurance industry experience with real risks and with moral hazard and selection bias issues. Probability theory and statistical tools help to explain how insurance companies use risk pooling to minimize overall risk. Innovation and government regulation have played important roles in the formation and oversight of insurance institutions. • The Federal Reserve "If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issuance of their currency, first by inflation and then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the people of all their property until their children will wake up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered." ~ Thomas Jefferson Excerpts from Rep. Louis T. McFadden's speech on the floor of the House of Representatives, June 10, 1932: Mr. Chairman, we have in this country one of the most corrupt institutions the world has ever known. I refer to the Federal Reserve Board and the Federal reserve banks. The Federal Reserve Board, a Government board, has cheated the Government of the United States and the people of the United States out of enough money to pay the national debt. The depredations and the iniquities of the Federal Reserve Board and the Federal Reserve banks acting together have cost this country enough money to pay the national debt several times over. ... • Douglas North - Effect of Institutions on Market Performance at FCC Effect of Institutions on Market Performance Douglas North, Nobel Laureate, Washington University June 30, 2003 In this 70 minute lecture, Dr. North talks about institutions and economic development. He focuses on two issues. One is what prevents economies from working well and the other is what can we do about it. He begins with Neoclassical economics, the theory we use to understand the problems. He observes that its objective was to explain efficient resource allocation in developed economies and, thus, was never intended to deal with the issues of economic development. He argues that, when we try to Neoclassical theory to development issues, we find that it has two serious problems: first, it mistakenly assumes the economy is frictionless and, second, it incorrectly assumes the economy is timeless (ie, static rather than dynamic). Dr. North then talks about how government should deal with those two problems. He notes that Neo-classical economists have gone into countries and said that all you have to do is get the prices right and everything works, but they have fallen flat on their faces over and over again. What is needed, he says, is to know enough about the background and cultural heritage of a society so you have some feeling for the interplay between the formal rules and the informal norms and the way they work. That is, we must understand the countrys institutions which are the incentive systems that structure human interaction and reduce uncertainty. What is ...

The report found abuse was edemic and spread throughout all of the institutions. Victims of the abuse have been lobbying for an investigation for many years, and although the report is detailed the names of abusers are missing from it. To read the Inquiry's report follow this link: www.childabusecommission.ie Magdalene Asylums were institutions for so-called "fallen" women, most of them operated by different orders of the Roman Catholic Church. In most asylums, the inmates were required to undertake hard physical labour such as laundry work. In Ireland, such asylums were known as Magdalene Laundries. It has been estimated that 30000 women were admitted during the 150-year history of these institutions, often against their will. The last Magdalene Asylum in Ireland closed on September 25, 1996.
