  • Military Interrogation Techniques Training - Intelligence Gathering Tactics/Methods (1943) DVD: Interrogation (also called questioning or interpellation) is interviewing as commonly employed by officers of the police, military, and Intelligence agencies with the goal of extracting a confession or obtaining information. Subjects of interrogation are often the suspects, victims, or witnesses of a crime. Interrogation may involve a diverse array of techniques, ranging from developing a rapport with the subject to outright torture. There are multiple techniques employed in interrogation including deception, torture, increasing suggestibility, and the use of mind-altering drugs. A person's suggestibility is how willing they are to accept and act on suggestions by others. Interrogators seek to increase a subject's suggestibility. Methods used to increase suggestibility may include moderate sleep deprivation, exposure to constant white noise, and using GABAergic drugs such as sodium amytal or sodium thiopental. Deception can form an important part of effective interrogation. In the United States, there is no law or regulation that forbids the interrogator from lying about the strength of their case, from making misleading statements or from implying that the interviewee has already been implicated in the crime by someone else. As noted above, traditionally the issue of deception is considered from the perspective of the interrogator engaging in deception towards the individual being interrogated. Recently, work completed regarding ...
  • CIA Archives: Interrogation Techniques (3/4) (1955) 1955 Watch the full film: Interrogations may involve torture. When torture is employed in interrogation, the first thing the interrogator typically does is to speculate on the type of information s/he would like to extract from the subject. This assists the interrogator in creating a benchmark that the subject must meet in order to end the painful or uncomfortable conditions that occur in torture. The process of using torture to extract this targeted information may have three possible outcomes. The first is that the subject knows nothing and provides made-up information or a false confession in order to cause the torture to stop; the second is that the subject has the information that the interrogator seeks but is able to "hold out" or divert the interrogators attention with false information (which can be misconstrued for the previous outcome mentioned); and the third is that the subject capitulates under torture and offers the interrogator truthful information. Interrogation has yielded all three results. However, much controversy surrounds the process of torture because of both its human rights implications and the fact that it remains possible that an innocent person can be tortured. When the subject of torture doesn't actually have information or is innocent, the subject may provide a false confession. If not, that individual must bear with the procedures with the knowledge that s/he cannot stop it. Many human rights ...

Known primarily for his 30-year collaboration with legendary British director Peter Brook and in recent years for being one of the most sought-after opera directors worldwide, Oida graces our stage with his solo masterpiece Interrogations. The comical play depicts a test that a Zen master gives to his student, lasting several days, with the goal to determine if the student has reached enlightenment. The test consists of a series of questions framed in koans, or riddles, that the student must answer correctly in order to "graduate." Since its premiere in 2979 at the Avignon Festival, this one-man play with live musical accompaniment has been hailed as Oida's masterwork and has been performed worldwide, with recent stops this summer in Austria and Barcelona. Oida's hilarious performance is accompanied live by Berlin-based experimental musician Dieter Trüstedt.

In 2005 the American Psychological Association endorsed the participation of military psychologists in detainee interrogations, inciting a firestorm of protest. APA officials held fast, contending that the involvement of psychologists ensured the interrogations were safe, ethical and effective. In our preliminary documentary, Interrogation Psychologists, the official story is refuted by activist psychologists and military interrogators; communications between APA officials and US military and government personnel; and government and media reports on the true role of psychologists in detainee interrogations.

  • My Little Investigations - Inaugural Engine Demo - Interrogations Developer diary: My Little Investigations (working title) is a new project I've decided to undertake to create a MLP:FiM video game. As is probably obvious to anyone who's played the game Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth, the gameplay is heavily based on that appearing in that game, although I'm not copying it feature-for-feature. The game's engine is completely custom-built in XNA, which means that it will need to be completed before any content can be put on top of it - which also means that, for the first while, videos featuring this game will be on the subject of game engine features, not on the subject of actual story content. To date, I've more or less completed the "interrogation" section of the conversation engine in the game, which is featured in this video. In it, Twilight asks the character in question something, and is then required to parse the response, press for more information, and eventually find a crack in the testimony when the character she's talking to is lying. When the game is done, it'll have a robust conversation engine that enables interactions with characters similar to those found in the Ace Attorney series. The idea behind the game will be similar, as well: at the start of each case, a crime will be committed, and it'll be up to Twilight Sparkle to investigate areas, talk to and interrogate other characters, and eventually crack the case by putting the pieces together. I should note that the graphics and ...

  • CIA Archives: Intelligence Gathering - Interrogation of Enemy Airmen (1/2) (1943) Watch the full film: More CIA films: HUMINT, a syllabic abbreviation of the words HUMan INTelligence, refers to intelligence gathering by means of interpersonal contact, as opposed to the more technical intelligence gathering disciplines such as SIGINT, IMINT and MASINT. NATO defines HUMINT as "a category of intelligence derived from information collected and provided by human sources." Typical HUMINT activities consist of interrogations and conversations with persons having access to pertinent information. Good intelligence management begins with the proper determination of what needs to be known. Unless precise requirements are set, data will be collected unsystematically and the decision maker ultimately left without pertinent information on which to act. Collected data must be evaluated and transformed into a usable form and sometimes stored for future use. Evaluation is essential, because many of the wide variety of sources are of doubtful reliability. A standardized system is used to rate the reliability of sources and the likely accuracy of the information they provide; information may be classified as true once it is confirmed by a number of sources. The manner in which HUMINT operations are conducted is dictated by both official protocol and the nature of the source of the information. Within the context of the US Military, most HUMINT activity does not involve clandestine activities. Both CI and HUMINT do ...
  • No Right to Lawyer During Interrogation in Canada Canadian suspects of serious crimes do not have a constitutional right to have a lawyer present during questioning by authorities, the Supreme Court of Canada said today. In three decisions released Friday, a sharply divided court ruled on a suspect's right to have counsel, specifically whether the Charter's right to counsel extends beyond being able to call and talk to a lawyer after being arrested. In the central case, the court ruled 5-4 that Canadians have no right to have a lawyer sit in during an interrogation. "The charter does not mandate the presence of defence counsel throughout a custodial interrogation," the majority decision said. "Precedent is against this interpretation." The court said police cannot force a suspect to participate in an interrogation, but that the suspect does not have the right to have a lawyer there if they chose to participate in the interrogation. In US television shows, frustrated cops often walk out of the interrogation room after a suspect says, "I want my lawyer." In Canada, suspected criminals can't just "lawyer up." The court specifically noted Canadians do not have the same rights as Americans do during interrogations. "We are not persuaded that the (American) Miranda rule should be transplanted in Canadian soil," the majority decision said. "Adopting procedural protections from other jurisdictions in a piecemeal fashion risks upsetting the balance that has been struck by Canadian courts and legislatures." In the same case, along ...

  • CIA Archives: Interrogation Techniques (4/4) (1955) 1955 Watch the full film: Enhanced interrogation techniques or alternative set of procedures were terms adopted by the George W. Bush administration in the United States to describe interrogation methods used by US military intelligence and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to extract information from individuals captured in the "War on Terror" soon after the September 11 attacks in 2001. The British government has determined some of these techniques would be classified as torture under European law. They are regarded by many in the international press as torture although, as Paul Kane of the Washington Post explained, the Post has not called it torture for the same reason they use the word "alleged:" until a conviction, newspapers can only describe a crime as "alleged." The New York Times called the techniques "harsh" and "brutal" while avoiding the word "torture" in most but not all news articles, though it has called "enhanced interrogation" torture in editorials. In December 2005, the United States eliminated use of these techniques by passing the Detainee Treatment Act, and limiting interrogation methods to those explicitly authorized by the United States Army Field Manual. The Obama administration completed the formation of the High-Value Interrogation Group in January 2010 to interrogate high-value terrorist suspects. In early 2002, immediately following Abu Zubaydah's capture, top US Government officials including ...
