  • Livestock coming in to kraal in Karamoja Uganda A kraal is an area where the Karamojong gather their herds for safety and protection. 4000 to 5000 head of livestock is not uncommon. They take the animals out in to surrounding areas during the day in search for forage and water. The fences separating the individual herds are made from thorned branches. Note the wooden structure in the beginning. These men are lucky enough to have a tarp to stretch out for protection from the rains. The typical shelter is a grass thatched hut. The Karamojong are agro-pastoralists. They will move their herds to wherever there there is food for their livestock. For more information on my work with the Karamojong please visit

  • Karamojong: From Ugandan Warriors to Street Beggars Learn more: Karamojong—Uganda's last pastoralist tribe—suffers considerable hardship due to Ugandan government's shoot-first-ask-later disarmament campaign, which is intended to strip these cattle-hearding warriors off their Kalashnikovs. Forced to assimilate into "modern" society, some end up in Kamapala begging for money. For generations the tribe of warrior nomads that lives here has been caught in a cycle of cattle rustling, violence, brutality and neglect. Over the past decade, Uganda's government has been conducting an often ferocious disarmament campaign. Now it is claiming success. But as life changes, what does the future hold for the people of Karamoja? This report is part of a Pulitzer Center-sponsored project "Karamoja: Broken Warriors" bit.ly

  • Uganda Movie This video chronicles the past few years of living and working among the Karamojong of Northeastern Uganda. Despite their fierce reputation, these men and women are like family to us. What we tried to highlight in this pictorial description is what it takes to reach an unreached people group. Who they are traditionally, what it takes physically just to get to them, building relationships and sharing Hope (through many means- look for agriculture projects, road building projects, feeding and relief projects, medical assistance, chronological Bible storying, etc), watching with joy as they receive the fulness of forgiveness in Jesus the Messiah, and helping them begin to share with friends and enemies the hope they have. Lots of hard work and many very key people are not pictured here, so this is in no way comprehensive. We just wanted to share a glimpse in to our lives among the Tepez- Karamojong.
