  • Reading an Ancient 32K Intel EPROM By Hand Yesterday I discovered a veritable relic in the shop. Inside a tackle box that was acquired with a bunch of other stuff at an auction was an Intel D7232A. That's a 32 Kilobit UV-eraseable EPROM designed in 1982. I looked online for a tech doc, and sure enough it was available. With this information in hand, I proceeded to throw together a board to see if anything was still on this ancient chip, and I wanted to have some fun doing it in an uncommon way. Anyone can read the contents of an EPROM using a reader or a microcontroller, but I decided to read it "by hand" as it were. This video shows the result. The top row of LEDs (red) shows the 12-bit address the switches have selected. The bottom right row of LEDs (green) shows the 8-bit page that is at the selected address (the data). The two LEDs to the left on the bottom are both active-low control lines--output enable (amber) and chip select (blue). I don't know what the data on the chip is for--it could be boot code or anything. Here's the bit stream (MSB to LSB) for the first handful of pages: 0101-1100 1000-0000 0000-0100 1101-0011 1111-1010 0000-0100 0000-1010 0101-1100 0000-0011.

In this talk we will give an overview of some recent activity done at the Universita` di Pisa on link emulation and packet scheduling. We will cover two main topics: - the "dummynet" link emulator shaper at info.iet.unipi.it which has been recently ported to Linux and Windows (in addition to FreeBSD and OSX), and extended with support for multiple scheduling algorithms. In the talk we will briefly the features of dummynet, discuss its performance and applicability, and describe the strategy used to build kernel modules for three very different systems starting from the same codebase. - fast packet scheduling algorithms. info.iet.unipi.it We will present QFQ, a truly practical WFQ scheduler with O(1) complexity and very small constants (110ns per packet on a low-end workstation, 2.5..4 times faster than the best competitor). QFQ is available on all major platforms as part of dummynet. The talk will briefly cover the features of QFQ, and compare it with other existing packet scheduling algorithms.   • Quest Software RDP Graphics Acceleration This is a demonstration of dramatic difference in end user experience when comparing version 6.1 of the Microsoft RDP Protocol, Optimized to use less network bandwidth, vs Quest Software's RDP Graphics Acceleration. In this demonstration both tests are being performed across the same 128 kilobit per second WAN connection to virtual machines in Reston Virginia, from my client in San Diego California. The connection has approximately 150 milliseconds of latency The first demonstration is of RDP 6.1 on Vista SP1. As we can see, as bandwidth is reduced to 128 kilobits per second, RDP 6.1 performs poorly even when optimized to use less network bandwidth. The second demonstration is of the same web content rendered via Quest Software's RDP Graphics Acceleration over the same 128 kilobit per second WAN connection.

Back in the Internet's design phase, Bob Kahn and I spent six months developing concepts and architecture and a year creating the TCP specification, but we didn't know that the idea would work. We concentrated on solving the problems we envisioned, such as networks that couldn't handle each other's packet lengths. Security against direct attacks and authentication of sources weren't high on the agenda. Now that we have spam, DDOS, viruses, and worms, we look back and think about what we might have done differently had we realized that we were creating a global infrastructure for the 21st century!
