  • Wesley Clark "swiftboats" John Mccain (2 of 2) Wes Clark stood by his criticism of John McCain in a television interview last night, stressing that while he would "never, never dis someone's service," it is legitimate to discuss what types of military experience are relevant to being commander in chief. Republicans have been twisting Clark's mundane observation that McCain's experience "getting shot down" in a fighter plane is not a "qualification to be president." Clark made the point in response to a question from CBS' Bob Schieffer on Sunday, while noting that he "honor[ed]" McCain's service and considered him a "hero." Of course, the Republican "outrage" to Clark is both hypocritical, as The Nation's Ari Berman noted, and illogical, since McCain's war experience is laudatory but different than running the country. Professor Sandy Levinson explains: One might say... that John McCain displayed literally incredible valor in responding to many years of torture in Vietnam; I would also add my admiration for McCain's refusing to bear grudges against those who had been anti-War during the 1960s. But why would any person believe that "getting shot down" (which is precisely what happened to McCain) and then being tortured has anything to do with qualifying one to be President of the United States as against, say, receiving an award for displaying incredible grace under maximum pressure?... Isn't it worth thinking about the fact that the three senators who in fact saw ground combat in Vietnam -- James Webb, Chuck Hagel, and ...

The Administrative Law Judge rejected that argument en route to rejecting the at-grade Del Mar crossing application saying: "The laudatory endorsement of safety provided by gates, even the new 4-quadrant gates, do not satisfy us for all circumstances. If gates were the definitive solution to crossing protection there would never be instances where drivers crash through them on the way to an accident." His decision at Del Mar was overruled by the full Commission in a controversial 3-2 decision.

  • Future Policy Award 2009 This prize is not awarded to a person who has achieved special things. This prize celebrates policies that enable lots of people to do the right thing by creating the right frameworks, said Jakob von Uexkull, the founder of the World Future Council at the award ceremony in Hamburgs historic town hall. Only with the help of good political frameworks can a sustainable and healthy world be passed on to future generations, von Uexkull said. The Future Policy Award is the first prize that celebrates policies on an international level. The World Future Council will award this prize every year to raise public awareness of these good policies and to promote international dissemination of such exemplary legislation. The selected political area for the Future Policy Award 2009 was Food Security. This means that policies could be nominated that convert the Human Right to Food into everyday reality. The Future Policy Award 2009 was awarded to a municipal policy of the Brazilian city Belo Horizonte. This is the most comprehensive policy for the abolition of hunger, stated Count Hans Christof von Sponeck in his laudatory speech. The Belo Horizonte Food Security Programme managed to reduce child mortality by 60 percent und to reduce undernourishment among children by 75 percent within the space of only a decade. These impressive results were achieved with measures that could easily be adopted by other cities, said von Sponeck, former Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations ...

  • A Tamil Krithi by Poet Subramanya Bharathi - "Theeradha Vilayattu Pillai Kannan" (1948 Soundtrack) Bala Krishna (Dolai Kannan) Sevai at Shanguchakra Home. The accompanying song "Theeradha Vilayattu Pillai" was written by Poet Subramanya Bharathi and rendered by Padma Vibhushan Smt DK Pattammal for the 1948 Tamil Movie "Vedala Ulagam" in Ragamalika. The music was composed by Sri R Sudarsanam. The song describes the childish pranks Bala Krishna. Subramanya Bharathi (Tamil: சுப்பிரமணிய பாரதி) (December 11, 1882 - September 11, 1921) was a Tamil poet from Tamil Nadu, India, an independence fighter and iconoclastic reformer. Known as Mahakavi Bharathi (the laudatory epithet Maha Kavi meaning Great Poet in many Indian languages), he is celebrated as one of India's greatest poets. Bharathi was prolific and adept in both the prose and poetry forms. His compositions helped rally the masses to support the Indian independence movement in South India. Bharathi lived during an eventful period of Indian history, his contemporaries including prominent leaders of the Indian independence movement such as Mahatma Gandhi, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Sri Aurobindo and VVSAiyar. Bharathi was a pioneer in introducing a new style of Tamil poetry. Until then the poems had to follow the strict syntactic rules set down by the ancient Tamil grammatical treatise Tolkāppiyam. Bharathi broke this syntactic bonds and created a prose-poetic style known as the puthukkavithai (modern poems). Bharathi produced pieces such as Kannan Paattu (Song of Krishna), in which Bharathi sought to portray ...

  • Ronald Reagan Testimony Part 27: Iran-Contra Affair / Poindexter Trial (1990) February 17, 1990 Watch the full testimony: Reagan's ability to connect with the American people earned him the laudatory moniker "The Great Communicator." Of it, Reagan said, "I won the nickname the great communicator. But I never thought it was my style that made a difference—it was the content. I wasn't a great communicator, but I communicated great things." His age and soft-spoken speech gave him a warm grandfatherly image. Reagan also earned the nickname "the Teflon President", in that public perceptions of him were not tarnished by the controversies that arose during his administration. According to Congresswoman Patricia Schroeder, who coined the phrase, and reporter Howard Kurtz, the epithet referred to Reagan's ability to "do almost anything wrong and not get blamed for it." Public reaction to Reagan was always mixed; the oldest president was supported by young voters, and began an alliance that shifted many of them to the Republican party. However, Reagan was unpopular with minority groups, especially African-Americans. His support of Israel throughout his presidency earned him support from many Jews, though. He emphasized family values in his campaigns and during his presidency, although he was the first president to have been divorced. The combination of Reagan's speaking style, unabashed patriotism, negotiation skills, as well as his savvy use of the media, played an important role in defining the 1980s and his ...

  • Marilyn Manson Marilyn Manson (born Brian Hugh Warner; January 5, 1969) is an American musician and artist known for his controversial stage persona and image as the lead singer of the eponymous band, Marilyn Manson. His stage name was formed from juxtaposing the names of two 1960's American cultural icons, namely, actress Marilyn Monroe and convicted multiple murder mastermind Charles Manson as a critical and, simultaneously, laudatory appraisal of America and its peculiar culture. He has a long legacy of being depicted in the media as a detrimental influence on children. The seemingly outrageous styles for which he models and the controversy surrounding his lyrics have led to his very pronounced public appeal. Manson formed Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids in Florida in 1989 (the name was shortened to Marilyn Manson in 1992). In the summer of 1993, the band drew the attention of Trent Reznor. Reznor produced their 1994 debut album, Portrait of an American Family and released it on his Nothing Records label. The band began to develop a cult following, which grew larger with the release of Smells Like Children in 1995. That EP yielded the band's first big MTV hit with "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)", a cover of the 1983 Eurythmics hit. Antichrist Superstar (co-produced by Trent Reznor) was an even greater success. In the US alone, three of the band's albums have been awarded platinum certification, three more gold, and the band has had three releases debut in the top ten, including ...

  • Giuseppe Borgatti, "Nel verno a pie", Wagner: Die Meistersinger (rec. 1905) Italian dramatic tenor Giuseppe Borgatti (1871-1950), the creator of the title role in the world premiere of Giordano's verismo opera Andrea Chénier in 1896 and widely renowned in Italy for his assumption of dramatic Wagnerian roles, is featured here in Walter's song "Nel verno al pie del focolar" (sung in Italian text) from Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, recorded for Fonotipia on 14 December 1905. The following biographical notes comes from Wikipedia: "Giuseppe Borgatti (born Cento, March 17, 1871—died Reno di Leggiuno, October 18, 1950) was an Italian dramatic tenor with an outstanding voice. (See Michael Scott's "Record of Singing" for a laudatory appraisal of his singing.) The creator of the title role in Umberto Giordano's verismo opera Andrea Chénier, he subsequently earned renown for his performances of the music of Richard Wagner, becoming in 1904 the first Italian tenor to appear at the Bayreuth Festival. • Bach - Das Orgelbüchlein: "Herr Gott, nun sei gepreiset" BWV 601 Advent chorale. Two versions: the second ("Herr Gott, nun sei gepreiset", now played) is overtly laudatory and solemn. As a consequence of such an understanding, we chose a denser registration, providing the chorale prelude with a very clear pedal part; the first ("Herr Christ, der ein'ge Gottessohn" - watch it in this very channel) expresses deep joy as the predominant mood. So, we opt for a not so heavy registration, and preserved the pedal part blending with the other three voices.
  • Krzysztof Penderecki - Iże Cheruwimy (Song of the Cherubim) for chorus Krzysztof Penderecki (*1933) Iże Cheruwimy (Song of the Cherubim) for chorus (1986) Polisku Chór Kameralny/Jan Łukaszewski Composed in 1986, Penderecki's "Song of Cherubim" for mixed a capella chorus SSAATTBB and lasting slightly over seven minutes in duration is a setting of an Orthodox liturgy hymn text. Like the at times spine-chilling Utrenia, this work also evokes feelings of the ancient church, a laudatory atmosphere with compressed intensity just below the surface. Sung in Church Slavonic, this hymn of praise by the cherubim (a class of angels ranking just below the seraphim) opens with a scale-wise theme in slow triplet meter, the first line interweaving beautifully and mysteriously with its imitation--"Let us the cherubim mystically repesenting." At the end of the phrase, the first voice sustains on a note making a centrally pitched drone for the second voice to work against. The tenor voices then state the melody again, underscored by low harmonic chanting in the basses--" ... and unto the life-giving Trinity and thrice-holy chant intoning." In gently rocking parallel harmonies, the upper voices join in against a sustained pedal point in the basses--" ... and now lay aside all earthly care." The singing is taken over by the idea of chant, and we hear the last lines in a style between the Orthodox Church chants and the Gabrieli opposed choir imitations. The harmonies begin to freely move about and the rhythm begins to be loosened as the harmonies become more ...

  • Recycle Blue Bin Pickup at 0832 Sun 02.12.2007 A laudatory waste management operation surrounding the recycle Blue Bin pickup at 0832 Sun 02.12.2007. There were no fly tipped recycle Orange Bags by the Council although there were a couple on the ground most likely from another source. The fly tipped rubbish at the end by the kerb was cleared on Thursday last as was the recycle Blue Bin containing unsuitable rubbish. Thus, all the recycle Blue Bins were available, and this time not fully used. The far end one by the kerb only had some six recycle Orange Bags added. These recycle Blue Bins can take 30 or so. This was not emptied which raises a question as to why? It was also almost entirely clean under the recycle Blue Bins with just a few scraps on the ground in front at the near end. Those bits at the far end by the kerb are road works equipment: a yellow plate to cover holes, a cone and a sign. I am concerned about the yellow line parking. Although they were able to get behind the vehicle so parked to use the drop kerb at that point, there really should not be any parked vehicles there at any time. Since it is not enforced on Sundays, people park there obstructing the waste management removal. I am also still concerned about the noise nuisance on Sunday mornings at this early hour although these guys drove up quietly, removed and emptied the recycle Blue Bins as quietly as possible and drove away quietly too. I've been conditioned to expect this noise nuisance on a Sunday morning which wakes me in anticipation and ...

  • "The island paradise we've been searching for" Ana.k's photos around Gili Trawangan, Indonesia A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Gili Trawangan, Indonesia by TravelPod blogger Ana.k titled "The island paradise we've been searching for" Ana.k's travel blog entry: "Denpasar - Padangbai - Lembar - Mataram - Bangsal - Gili Trawangan The deservedly celebrated Gili Trawangan has been our island base for the past week and a half. I have a laundry list of praises for this paradise, but before I get lost in talking about all its laudatory characteristics, I have to document the thoroughly third world journey here. While in Bali, I'd read about the Gilis Islands (Gili actually means "island", making the "islands" pretty unnecessary) and immediately decided I wanted to go there. What especially pushed me to want to see these little treasures, was the fact that what we'd seen of Bali's beaches just didn't live up to expectations. There just HAD to be more to Indonesia's beaches than Kuta, and I was determined to discover what there was. Some noteworthy LP mentions of the Gilis: no motorized traffic, cats but no dogs, palm fringed beaches with coral reefs hidden below, bungalows a mere hungover hobble away, and all small enough to encircle in a two-three hour walk. The written descriptions and photographs all seemed to promise an island paradise exactly the opposite of what we'd encountered in Kuta (save for the culinary delights). We weighed our options for transportation. Uncharacteristic of travellers on backpackers' budgets, we'd spent the majority of ...
  • Mattia Battistini, "Figlia di regi, a te l'ommaggio", Meyerbeer: L'Africana (rec. 1912) Dubbed as "King of the Baritones", Mattia Battistini (1856-1928) remains, along with Caruso and Melba, one of the legendary singers of the 20th century. Battistini is featured here in Nelusko's scene, "Figlia di regi, a te l'ommaggio...Quando amor m'accende" from Meyerbeer's L'Africana. The recording was made in May 1912. Pictures of Battistini appearing in this video come from: Jacques Chuilon, Mattia Battistini: King of Baritones and Baritone of Kings, translated by Thomas Glasow (Plymouth: Scarecrow Press, 2009). In his mostly laudatory appraisal of Battistini's recordings in "The Record of Singing", Michael Scott singled out this one for special mention, pointing out that: "...every section is strongly contrasted. The opening cantabile con portamento with the allegro vivace, "Quando amor ,'accende", where he hurls out the marcato passages yet without breaking the line; then at the end of the swelling phrases 'O Brama, O Dio possente", he spins out a legato of incomparable eloquence and intensity. Sung like this, Meyerbeer would not be difficult to revive." The following synopsis of the opera comes from wikipedia: The opera depicts fictional events in the life of the explorer Vasco da Gama. Place: Lisbon, at sea, and in an exotic new land. Time: late 15th century Act 1 The council chamber, Lisbon. The beautiful Inèz is forced by her father, the Grand Admiral Don Diego, to marry Don Pédro instead of her true love, Vasco da Gama. Da Gama, who is thought to have died in ...
  • Marilyn Manson on Religion BLOG Facebook Page on.fb.me Twitter ------------------------------------------------------------------- Marilyn Manson (born Brian Hugh Warner; January 5, 1969) is an American musician and artist known for his controversial stage persona and image as the lead singer of the eponymous band, Marilyn Manson.
