It is named for the Toque shaped whorl of hair on its head, rather like the bonnet of the related Bonnet Macaque.
  • Facial communication between mother and infant macaque monkeys 2 A mother gesturing at her 6-day-old infant. The type of gestures that can be observed (lipsmacking and teeth-chatter) are common among rhesus macaques. What is striking here is the exaggeration of the gesture that is accompanied by head-bobbings in order to further attract infant attention. This seems to be specific to mother-infant relationship. The exaggeration of facial displays and other modifications of the behavior in humans (eg, the high pitch in the voice) are typical ways of communicating between mother and infant, the so called 'motherese.' Our study demonstrated that these types of gesturing are very common during the first three weeks of the infant macaque life. However, their functions remain unclear. • Long-tailed macaque in Bukit Timah National Park - Singapore The Long-tailed Macaque (macaca fascicularis) is to be found in a wide range of habitats including primary and secondary forest, mangroves, plantations and the outskirts of towns and villages. Its success is largely due to a varied diet of fruits, leaves, small mammals and birds, shellfish and crabs, as well as human leftovers. In Singapore it is the commonest primate. Bukit Timah Nature Reserve is what Singapore used to be 180 years ago. Before the early 19th century, most of the island was covered in lowland, primary forest. Between 1820 and 1870, a substantial portion of virgin forest was cleared to develop the island as an important trading post. By 1886, only 10% of the original forest cover remained. The development of MacRitchie Reservoir (then known as the Impounding Reservoir) in 1868 brought the forest devastation around the area to a halt. The forest around the reservoir was protected as a water catchment reserve. The reserve retains one of the largest tracts of primary rainforest left in Singapore. Bukit Timah is also home to Singapore's highest hill at 163.63 m. Composed mainly of granite, Bukit Timah Hill was once an active quarrying site in the mid-1900s. A 28 minutes documentary about Bukit Timah Nature Reserve in Singapore is part of the tv-series WONDERS of WILDERNESS and is available on DVD at Visit for highres version or broadcast video footage. • Facial communication between mother and infant macaque monkeys 1 Mother macaque interacting with her infant. The mutual gaze is sustained and is interrupted by gaze shifts, apparently aimed at attending the object of interest of her infant. During this face-to-face interaction, the mother is gently pulling the infant's head and seems to be particularly attracted by the eyes of the infant. What we found very common are the lipsmacks that are documented in this video. These mouth-face contacts closely resemble the human kiss. We can only speculate about the possible origin of the human kiss from these particular mother-infant grooming activities. • July 2010 Macaque Rescue Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation, Inc. (WRR) accepted seven Long-tailed Macaques from a lab in New Jersey that went bankrupt. There were a total of 55 macaques, and other sanctuaries — Mindy's Memory, Born Free USA, and Primarily Primates — all stepped up to save these precious lives. The monkeys arrived on the morning of July 17, 2010, at our sanctuary in Kendalia, Texas. They were curious about their new surroundings and no doubt, eager to be freed from the confines of their traveling crates. It is unfortunate that the lab decided to leave their hideous restraint collars on the monkeys, but we removed them within one week of their arrival here at WRR. The seven male macaques are still getting familiar with their new home via their temporary holding cages, as you can see in the video. They will soon be allowed to roam in a two-acre enclosure complete with trees, rocks, bushes, tall green grass, and blue skies overhead. Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation wants to thank In Defense of Animals for their amazing efforts in making this rescue possible. This simply could not have been done without their persistence and hard work. In addition to coordinating the efforts and dealing with all the legal issues, IDA also saw to it that the monkeys were safely transported to the sanctuaries where finally they can now leave their past behind them. We also would like to thank Camille with Win Animal Rights for her efforts in this rescue. She was a champion for these monkeys and would not ...

  • The Hidden Life of the Barbary Macaques This is a video about the Barbary Macaques. It is filmed in the Atlas Cedar forest of Ifrane in the Middle Atlas of Morocco. These macaques are only found in the Atlas Mountains of Algeria and Morocco with a small, possibly introduced, population in Gibraltar. The monkey is yellowish-brown to grey with lighter undersides, growing to a maximum size of 75 cm (30 in) and 13 kg (29 lb). Its face is a dark pink and its tail is vestigial. The front limbs of this monkey are longer than its hind limbs. Females are somewhat smaller than males. Dwelling in forests of cedar, pine and oak, the Barbary Macaque may frequent elevations of 2100 m (6900 ft) or more. It is a diurnal animal, dividing its time more or less equally between arboreal and terrestrial territory. Mostly herbivorous, this monkey feeds on leaves, roots, and fruit, but will also eat insects. By day, the Barbary Macaque patrols a territory which may span several square kilometers. The Barbary Macaque moves about energetically on all fours, occasionally rising erect on its hind limbs to survey for threats.
  • Saving Macaque Monkeys WONG: The British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection or BUAV, is calling for kinder treatment of macaque monkeys. The group says each year the primates are hunted down in places like Cambodia and kept in cruel conditions before being exported to laboratories and primate dealers in the US and China. STORY: Investigations by the BUAV and European Coalition to End Animal Experimentation have discovered that 10-thousand monkeys were exported from Cambodia last year. [Michelle Thew, BUAV Chief Executive]: There is growing concern over the plight of the primates. They're our closest living relatives and they're suffering enormous cruelty in this process and one only has to look at the footage and the images we have received to see the cruelty, the traumatization, the clear suffering these animals are undergoing in this process and also, just in terms of the impact on them and on the population and the fauna and flora of society. It's very important these animals are given protection." Although the long-tailed macaque is not endangered, BUAV is reporting that unregulated trade is already having an effect on their population numbers. International conventions discourage the use of captured wild animals for research, preferring second-generation breeding stock instead, but BUAV says this is widely ignored in Cambodia. BUAV has called on the Cambodian government to better regulate the industry and to ban the capture of wild animals. It also urges the US and European Union to ...
