In Dulci Jubilo (English "In Sweetest Rejoicing" but most commonly arranged as "Good Christian Men, Rejoice") is a traditional Christmas Carol. In its original setting, the carol is a macaronic text of German and Latin dating from the Middle Ages. Subsequent translations into English have increased its popularity, and it is a mainstay of the Christmas Nine Lessons and Carols repertoire. JS Bach's chorale prelude based on the tune (BWV 729) is also a traditional postlude for Christmas services. The original lyrics, a macaronic alternation of Medieval German and Latin, is thought to have been written by the German mystic Heinrich Seuse circa 1328. According to folklore, Seuse heard angels sing these words and joined them in a dance of worship. In dulci jubilo, Nun singet und seid froh! Unsres Herzens Wonne Leit in praesepio; Und leuchtet wie die Sonne Matris in gremio. Alpha es et O! (In sweet rejoicing, now sing and be glad! All our joy lies in the manger; It shines like the sun in the mother's lap. You are the alpha and omega!)

  • Ubi Caritas.wmv The text "Ubi caritas" is an ancient antiphon of Roman Catholic tradition that is used at the washing of the feet on the first day of the Triduum, Holy Thursday. It also makes a great communion song. I wrote this for the Church of Saint Paul (St. Cloud, MN) in the spring of 2009 for their Holy Week celebration. The refrain has two melodies, the one first sung by the men, and a simple ostinato that can be heard in the men's voices in the second refrain. The text is macaronic, using the Latin text with immediate English translations.

  • Zihaal-e-Miskin - A tribute to Amir Khusro by OnlineEM. Original Song by Chaya Ganguli. A beautiful song by Chaya Ganguli. A humble attempt by me... The phrase "Zeehaal-e-miskeen" comes from a poem of Amir Khuso. The unique thing about this poem is that it is a macaronic, written in Persian and Brij Bhasha. In the first verse, the first line is in Persian, the second in Brij Bhasha, the third in Persian again, and the fourth in Brij Bhasha. In the remaining verses, the first two lines are in Persian, the last two in Brij Bhasha. The poem showcases Amir Khusro's mastery over both languages. Video credits from Earth-

  • Acabella Siúl a Rúin Abair Amhrán 20 11 08 TG4 ie A traditional Irish song with English language verses and an Irish language chorus, a style known as macaronic. Other versions are known under the title "Johnny went for a soldier", with the chorus replaced with English lines, and "Buttermilk Hill", with the chorus replaced by nonsense syllables. The history of the song is unclear. It was suggested that it refers to the "Wild Geese" of the Glorious Revolution. If it does, however, the original version has probably been lost: All versions of the song have Modern English lyrics, and not a scrap of either Irish or Early Modern English verses survives. It is not uncommon that Irish songs were translated into English, with their chorus surviving in Irish, or being transformed into nonsense words (see Caleno custure me), but in most of these cases, traces of the Irish version survive. It was also observed that the reference to the spinning wheel the girl wants to sell is more suggestive of the 19th than of the 17th century. It is possible that the song was composed in the 1800s with the conscious intention of styling it after older songs. verse/chorus: Dm C Bb-C-Dm F Bb C Dm F Bb-C-Dm C Dm Version Mary Black I would I were on yonder hill It's there I'd sit and cry my fill And every tear would turn the mill Is go dté tú mo mhúirnín slán ** And may you go safely, my darling Siúl siúl siúl a rún ** Go, go, go, my love Siúl go socair 'is siúl go ciúin ** Go quietly and go peacefully Siúl go doras agus éalaigh liom ...
  • 15)Psallite.mpg German Renaissance composer, writer and organist Michael Praetorius ( est 1571 to 1621) composed Psallite as part of a prolific music catalog of over a thousand songs and arrangements. Psallite is unusual (at least to me!). It is an example of a Renaissance motet called a macaronic carol, meaning the text occurs in two different languages, in this case Latin and German. Michael Praetorius (1571-1621) used Latin for the rondo-like refrain with German on the verse (A-hah!! I had wondered about that!!). Performed by the Grotto Carolers at the Opening Night concert at the Grotto's Festival of Lights under the direction of Julie Stewart in Portland, OR.
