  • Malaysia's vernacular school system under scrutiny In Malaysia, parents looking for a primary school for their child can choose between Malay-, Tamil- or Chinese-language schools, the last two known as vernacular schools. Many parents prefer this system because they say the standards are higher and the discipline is better enforced than in mainstream institutions. Critics however argue that the drift towards vernacular schooling undermines the national Malay-language education system by keeping different ethnic groups apart and turning national schools into "Malay" institutions. The system is under scrutiny, dogged by questions on whether children are being taught tolerance or prejudice. Vernacular schools now stand accused of creating division in the country's multi-racial society, and there are increasing calls for a single-school system. Al Jazeera's Florence Looi reports from Kuala Lumpur. (Jan 07, 2010)

  • Maid in Malaysia August 2006 Malaysia's employers stand accused of abusing Indonesian maids. We reveal evidence of mass exploitation, and governments unwilling to intervene in this lucrative business. "I saw my friends coming back to the village from Malaysia with lots of money... so I came here." But, Nirmala Bonat soon wished she had stayed behind. Her employer "poured hot water over me, pressed an iron to my body and beat me all over". Without legislation to protect the 320000 Indonesian workers in Malaysia, it is a widespread and growing problem. Whilst Malaysia's Indonesian Ambassador Prince Rushdihardjo worries about those injured that "escape to our embassy," his government is reluctant to complain. It seems the wealth they return to their country is too valuable.

  • Minorities cry foul in Malaysia Najib Abdul Razak, Malaysia's prime minister, is set to present on Tuesday a new economic policy, a controversial socio-economic initiative that aims to give equal treatment to all ethnic groups in the country. But for decades many ethnic Chinese and Indian groups have long grieved of institutionalised discrimination and alleged the country's ethnic majority enjoy special advantages in housing, education and employment. Waves of ethnic Chinese and Indians left the country between 2008 and 2009 to seek a better life abroad. Although Najib is vowing equality for all, minority communities are pessimistic. Laura Kyle reports from Kuala Lumpur. [March 29, 2010]

  • A tower too far for Malaysia? The Malaysian government is planning on building one of the tallest buildings in the world - a 100-storey commercial tower that will cost an estimated $1.6bn. The country's prime minister says it will be "a symbol of a modern developed country", but the plan has angered thousands of Malaysians who see it as a huge waste of money. They view it as being redundant in a country with serious economic troubles and that already has the world's largest twin buildings in the Petronas Twin Towers. Al Jazeera's Azhar Sukri reports from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's capital. [October 21, 2010]
  • At the Crossroads - Malaysia December 2006 There are claims Malaysia's secular constitution is being threatened by creeping Islamisation. Non-Muslims feel they are being treated as second-class citizens. Moorthy Maniam was a Malaysian Hindu hero. After he died, a group of Muslims claimed he'd made a deathbed conversion. Despite his widow's protests, the Sharia Courts declared he should be buried as a Muslim. "They used Moorthy to show that in this country, Islam is supreme", complains lawyer M Manoharan. In the 1980s, Malaysia's Sharia courts were given equal power to the civil courts, creating two parallel legal systems. But while the Sharia Courts are constantly trying to extend their authority, secular courts are reluctant to challenge them. "Non Muslims have no place to go and fight for their basic rights".
