  • Highway Of Life: The Ancestors Of All Mammals Science & Reason on Facebook: Evolution (Part 3): Highway of Life (Episode 2): The ancestors of all mammals --- Please subscribe to Science & Reason: • • • • --- The evolution of mammals within the synapsid lineage (mammal-like-reptiles) was a gradual process that took approximately 70 million years, beginning in the mid-Permian. By the mid-Triassic, there were many species that looked like mammals, and the first true mammals appeared in the early Jurassic. The earliest known marsupial, Sinodelphys, appeared 125 million years ago in the early Cretaceous, around the same time as Eomaia, the first known eutherian (member of placentals' "parent" group); and the earliest known monotreme, Teinolophos, appeared two million years later. After the Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction wiped out the non-avian dinosaurs (birds are generally regarded as the surviving dinosaurs) and several other mammalian groups, placental and marsupial mammals diversified into many new forms and ecological niches throughout the Tertiary, by the end of which all modern orders had appeared. From the point of view of phylogenetic nomenclature, mammals are the only surviving synapsids. The synapsid lineage became distinct from the sauropsid ("reptile") lineage in the late Carboniferous period, between 320 and 315 million years ago, and were the most common and largest land vertebrates of the Permian period. But in the Triassic period ...
  • Mammals Check us out at Mammals (formally Mammalia) are a class of vertebrate, air-breathing animals whose females are characterized by the possession of mammary glands while both males and females are characterized by sweat glands, hair and/or fur, three middle ear bones used in hearing, and a neocortex region in the brain. Mammals are divided into three main infraclass taxa depending how they are born. These taxa are: monotremes, marsupials and placentals. Except for the five species of monotremes (which lay eggs), all mammal species give birth to live young. Most mammals also possess specialized teeth, and the largest group of mammals, the placentals, use a placenta during gestation. The mammalian brain regulates endothermic and circulatory systems, including a four-chambered heart. There are approximately 5400 species of mammals, distributed in about 1200 genera, 153 families, and 29 orders(though this varies by classification scheme). Mammals range in size from the 3040 millimeter (1- to 1.5-inch) Bumblebee Bat to the 33-meter (108-foot) Blue Whale. Mammals are divided into two subclasses: the Prototheria, which includes the oviparous monotremes, and the Theria, which includes the placentals and live-bearing marsupials. Most mammals, including the six largest orders, belong to the placental group. The three largest orders, in descending order, are Rodentia (mice, rats, porcupines, beavers, capybaras, and other gnawing mammals), Chiroptera (bats), and ...

  • MAMMALS The biggest creature that has ever lived, the blue whale, is a mammal. So too are tiny pygmy shrews, giant pandas and human beings. Mammals are an amazingly varied group but they are all warm-blooded vertebrates. They have a bony skeleton and hair on their bodies at some stage of their lives. All mammals feed their young on milk from their own bodies and adult females have mammary glands for producing this milk. Mammals are generally agreed to be the most intelligent of all animals and they have the most highly developed nervous systems. Most mammals have four limbs, but in some these have become adapted into flippers for swimming power (seals and whales) or even wings (bats). There are about 4600 species of mammal. Most live on land, but whales, dolphins, seals and sea lions are among those that have become adapted to life in water. Bats wings are made of skin stretched over a flexible bone structure like the human hand, so they can control their direction very easily. This makes them expert fliers and they spend much of the time in the air. Mammals are usually divided into three groups—monotremes (egg-laying mammals), marsupials (pouched mammals) and placental mammals. The placental group is by far the largest.

  • Highway Of Life: From Mammals To Primates Science & Reason on Facebook: Evolution (Part 3): Highway of Life (Episode 3): From Mammals To Primates --- Please subscribe to Science & Reason: • • • • --- The earliest mammal-like reptiles, called pelycosaurs ruled the earth for about 40 million years, and gave rise to the therapsids...one step closer to mammals. Therapsids are the direct ancestor of mammals. But before we say good bye to reptiles, let's pause and look down their temporal highway. Their descendants include the crocodilians, the dinosaurs and the birds. Back to our own road, Mammals are directly ahead. It is now 220 million years ago and the cynodonts have arrived on the scene. They have nearly all the features of mammals. Most early mammals were small and shrew-like animals that fed on insects. It is likely that they had a constant body temperature, milk glands for their young, and the beginning of a neocortex region of the brain. But this is also the era of the first dinosaurs, so our ancestors will have to wait for their turn to rule. 125 million years ago, two new developments paralleled each other, marsupials and eutheria. The marsupials would give rise to kangaroos and their cousins, but our line lies with eutheria which have a placenta. The earliest eutheria resembled a small mouse. 90 million years ago, we part lines with the ancestors of elephants and manatees, 85 million years ago, so long to the predecessors of horses ...

But such delicate creatures, too, get mistreated and abused. In Japan, a demand for dolphin and whale meat causes ruthless slaughter of countless of these marine mammals the images are not pretty. And on another hand, their intelligence makes humans captivate them and use them for entertainment in shows. Though they are fed in captive, but the hard training each day and the inability to roam around freely and do what they do in the wild often makes them lose the purpose of life. Such confined life for these mammals is torture, as they run into walls each way they turn. Thus, as a result, dolphins and whales are usually heartbroken and die young.
