  • de Havilland Moth The de Havilland Company, headed by Captain Geoffrey de Havilland, was a leader in the development of a light plane for sale to the English public. In 1923 the company entered the DH 53 Hummingbird in the Lympne trials, which was organized by the Air Ministry to encourage light plane development. However, the provisions of the trials called for the use of very small engines, and the Hummingbird lacked performance because it was underpowered. To remedy this, de Havilland introduced a more powerful plane, the DH 60, nicknamed the Moth, which was powered by a four-cylinder engine derived from a Renault V-8 produced during World War I. Introduced in 1925, the DH 60 became so successful that the entire supply of Renault engine parts was soon used up. Accordingly, de Havilland and engineer Frank Halford designed a new engine producing more horsepower but weighing only 14 pounds more than the DH 60's engine. This new engine was known as the Gipsy, and when it was installed in a de Havilland biplane in 1928, the plane was called the Gipsy Moth. By 1930 the Gipsy Moth had become England's most popular light plane for private flying. Inexpensive and easy to fly, the biplane made private flying possible for thousands of Britons. To meet the demand for this dependable aircraft, the de Havilland Company had to increase production from less than one aircraft per week to more than three per day. It wasn't long before 85 out of every 100 private planes in England were Moths produced by ...

  • Hummingbird Moth / Bee Moth This little fellow was at our cottage last summer. Many thanks to Chris from jcmegabyte for explaning what it is: "Those moths are sometimes called "Hummingbird Moths" or "Bee Moths" because of the way they hover while feeding on flower nectar. They are from the Sphinx Moth family (Sphingidae) and the smaller species do look a lot like Bumble Bees, a mimicry tactic probably developed to keep predators from attacking. In reality they are harmless - AND tasty to birds, etc.!" I know it's impossible to see in the video, but this little guy had antennae, and a long proboscis that it used to drink out of the flowers with. I looked up Hummingbird Moths on the internet, didn't see any thing looked like this one so I don't know what the official genus or species is. This video was taken in the Madewaska Valley in Southern Ontario. If you want to see some absolutely amazing moth and butterfly videos, check out jcmegabyte's page. • Moths - Jethro Tull Jethro Tull Album:Heavy Horses 1978 Lyrics The leaded window opened to move the dancing candle flame And the first Moths of summer suicidal came. And a new breeze chattered in its May-bud tenderness --- Sending water-lillies sailing as she turned to get undressed. And the long night awakened and we soared on powdered wings --- Circling our tomorrows in the wary month of Spring. Chasing shadows slipping in a magic lantern slide --- Creatures of the candle on a night-light-ride. Dipping and weaving --- flutter through the golden needle's eye in our haystack madness. Butterfly-stroking on a Spring-tide high. Life's too long (as the Lemming said) as the candle burned and the Moths were wed. And we'll all burn together as the wick grows higher --- before the candle's dead. The leaded window opened to move the dancing candle flame. And the first moths of summer suicidal came to join in the worship of the light that never dies in a moment's reflection of two moths spinning in her eyes.

  • Poodle Moth A moth that looks like a poodle! A new insect hybrid creature found in Venezuela, the poodle moth species is causing an internet buzz around the web. While exploring marine biology and the regional wildlife of Venezuela, Dr Arthur Anker discovered this adorable looking species of moth which is now being called the poodle moth as its popularity is spreading like wildfire around the internet. These images were uploaded to Arthur's flickr page which is linked in the description below. Scientists have identified around 200000 species of moths so far and believe there may be over 1 million different species in the world. While moths are typically known for eating clothing, most adult moths do not eat at all as many species do not even have mouths and must rely on drinking nector to live. Some people are saying that this has to be some type of wicked photo shop mix of a bird, a dog and a butterfly while others believe that it is real as Dr Anker's flickr page is full of incredible close ups of insects and underwater wildlife that tend to show some pretty unique views that make even some common animals looks very strange.
