  • FORT ERIE MAYOR on THE ACCOUNTABILITY BOTTOMLINE MISSISSAUGA WATCH Blog: Fort Erie was one of only 20 Ontario municipalities to allow its citizens a legitimate "closed meeting" investigation by the Ontario Ombudsman. As of January 17th, the Region of Niagara Council also voted in favour of allowing their citizens access to the Ombudsman's office bringing the number to just 21. As a dismal reflection on the state of Ontario hypocritical municipal governance, 112 Ontario municipalities have hired "investigators" through the Association of Ontario Municipalties (AMO) --and their "subsidiary corporation", Local Authority Services. Some municipalities are charging their residents as much as $250 for these AMO-approved hired-and-inspired "investigators". It gets worse. A few municipalities like Brampton and Ottawa preferred to choose their own "investigator" --period. Ottawa, for example, hired its former city solicitor. In the case of Brampton, its citizens get to fork over $250 to launch an "investigation" using Brampton's Brampton-approved --and-paid "investigator". It's been quite a "ride" watching Ontario municipalities twist themselves into pretzels in their attempt to avoid a legitimate, independent review. Yes, "avoid". That's exactly how the Town of Markham put it during a presentation at their October 2007 General Committee meeting. Please see: farm3 and the actual Markham presentation at: www.markham.ca
  • Benedict XVI: unity and plurality for Italy Municipalities in Italy, together with the parishes, are the basic unit of society, combining unity and plurality. These were just a few of the words Pope Benedict XVI spoke on Saturday to representatives of Italian municipalities. For her part the Church asks for no privilege, but only to be able to perform her function. On the subject of citizenship, the Pope asked the municipalities to find ways of conjoining peaceful co-existence and respect for the laws, while taking into account the civil and religious tradition in Italy, a tradition steeped in Christianity.

  • "All cannabis use is medical use?" Until the government steals our crops! Watch this move "the Union" for more insight. If Prop 19 was before me right now, I would vote for it. I don't like the taxation part of it, in that it would allow for excessive taxation. I believe you're right about leaving that door wide open. However, municipalities are already passing marijuana laws at a community level. Look at LA and San Diego, or Oakland for that matter. Prop 19 in my opinion was not making it easier for municipalities to do this. They do it anyway, with or without Prop 19. The best thing about Prop 19, is it was not the final chapter in the story. 2012 comes around, we revise the law via another Proposition. The second best thing that it did, was it created incentive for municipalities to compete for ganja business. In a true free market, that would play out to the advantage of all cannabis consumers. Not all municipalities would be dumb enough to force pot business out of their communities. And the ones who tried to do that (Like LA and San Diego are doing right now), will be begging for them to come back. Especially knowing that other communities would be getting revenue from these business. Free market definitely works. The competition would force municipalities to lower their licensing, or taxing codes in pricing, so that they had a healthy cannabis business. Same thing with vineyards and stuff, the history there is very similar. I also believe very strongly that all of the hysteria about how it would effect medical rights, was ...
  • Bornholm Island - Denmark Bornholm is a Danish island in the Baltic Sea located to the east of (most of) the rest of Denmark, the south of Sweden, and the north of Poland. The main industries on the island include fishing, arts and crafts like glass making and pottery using locally worked clay, and dairy farming. Tourism is important during the summer. The topography of the island consists of dramatic rock formations in the north, sloping down towards "pine and deciduous forests" (greatly damaged by storms in the 1950s) and farmland in the middle and sandy beaches in the south. It also refers to Bornholm Regional Municipality, the municipality (Danish: kommune) which covers the entire island. Bornholm was one of the three last Danish municipalities not belonging to a county— the others being Copenhagen and Frederiksberg. On 1 January 2007, the municipality lost its short-lived (2003 until 2006) county privileges and became part of Region Hovedstaden (ie the Copenhagen Capital Region). The small islands Ertholmene are located 18 km (11 mi) to the northeast of Bornholm. They do not belong to either a municipality or a region but are administered by the Ministry of Defence. Strategically located in the Baltic Sea, Bornholm has been a bone of contention usually ruled by Denmark, but also by Lübeck and Sweden. The castle ruin Hammershus, on the northwestern tip of the island, is the largest medieval fortress in northern Europe, testament to the importance of its location. ( source Wikipedia )

  • ALLOW THE ONTARIO OMBUDSMAN INTO MUNICIPALITIES! "Ontario remains the only province in Canada where citizens cannot turn to their Ombudsman if, for example, they have a problem with a hospital. The situation is similar for long-term care facilities, children's aid societies, school boards or police. My office hears complaints from thousands of people every year about these crucial publicly- funded services, but we are powerless to help them. The government could change this, but this past year, it expressly chose not to -- it repeatedly turned down legislative opportunities to remove these institutions from their zones of immunity. This is a downright embarrassing situation for Ontario. All is not well in the MUSH sector, yet Ontario is dead last of all provinces in providing independent oversight of these institutions. Millions of Ontarians are at the mercy of a special kind of Big Brother -- the hospitals, the long-term care facilities, the children's aid societies and the like are cleverly guised as "private entities" and deemed off-limits to proper checks and balances. Big Brother has his hand firmly planted in our back pocket -- government revenues his lifeline; unaccountability his refuge. Ontario is, shamefully, a "have-not" province in this regard." One of Portugal's most internationally famous products, Port wine, was named after the city because it was originally shipped from the area or, more precisely, from Vila Nova de Gaia, a city just across the river which belongs to the same conurbation. The country was also named after the Latin name of this city, Portus Cale (English: Port of Gaia).

  • KINGSTON CITY HALL VIDEO SURVEILLANCE CITIZEN "POP-IN" TEST MISSISSAUGA WATCH Blog: BOTTOMLINE: KINGSTON CITY HALL PASSES initial test! We confess we fell in love with Kingston City Hall. Felt such reverance. It is the only city hall we've visited where CANADA happens. CANADA lives and breathes inside Kingston city hall. Every Canadian should go --ask for Herb as your tour guide. Back to the task at hand. MISSISSAUGAWATCH is currently investigating the security practices of several Ontario municipalities and one Out-of-Province" for comparative purposes to those of Mississauga Corporate (City) Security. On May 20, 2008, the husband/wife MISSISSAUGAWATCH team visited Kingston City Hall to conduct a quick'n easy test on their video surveillance compliance practices. Regarding the Ontario city hall video surveillance test, we just answer this question. Is there VIDEO SURVEILLANCE signage posted in underground parking and doors of [the subject] city hall? YES. NO. If NO, then we looked around to see if there were VIDEO SURVEILLANCE cameras around. If there are. then the subject city hall is in VIOLATION of the 2001 "Guidelines for Using Video Surveillance Cameras in Public Places". We'd then be justified in wondering what other guidelines and legislation are also being violated by [the subject] city hall. WARNING: Do not try this citizen-test yourself. Ontario municipalities can be shameless bullies only too happy to ban you from their Corporate Property. Things could even go worse --arrest. A simple test that ...

  • Discover: South Samar The Municipalities of Sta. Rita, Basey and Marabut are known as the South Samar Municipalities. These three municipalities are noted for its beautiful and natural wonders. The caves, the rock formations, the mangrove forests, the falls and the flora and fauna attracts attention among tourists. Apart from the natural wonders, the Municipality of Basey during World Ward II was the US Naval Base for intelligence more popularly known as the Joint Intelligence for Naval and Marine Operation Center (JINAMOC) that orchestrated the return of Gen. Douglas MacArthur. Today, the island is called Jinamoc Island. This island was vital to the war in the Pacific. From 1944 to 1945 the island became the seaplane base of the fighting flying boat which provides berthing and repair of the Patrol Bombing Squadron 20 and the amphibious forces. What remains now of the facilities are the ghosts of the once feared and dreaded forces.
  • FCSS Family and Community Support Services Alberta Calgary Edmonton Government www.child.alberta.ca Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) is an 80/20 funding partnership between the Government of Alberta, and municipalities or Metis Settlements. Provincially, the FCSS Program receives its mandate from the Family and Community Support Services Act and Regulation. The Regulation sets out the service requirements, that a municipality or Settlement must meet to be eligible for funding. At the local level, a municipality or Metis Settlement Council chooses whether to establish a Program, and enters into an agreement with the province to jointly fund the Program. Under FCSS, communities design and deliver social programs that are preventive in nature to promote and enhance well-being among individuals, families, and communities. The programs depend on community resources, often involving volunteers in management and delivery. The FCSS philosophy is based on a belief that self-help contributes to a sense of integrity, self-worth and independence. The programs developed are intended to help individuals in their community to adopt healthy lifestyles, thereby improving the quality of life and building the capacity to prevent and/or deal with crisis situations should they arise.
