  • 1940 The French Navy at Sea British Newsreel. May 2, 1940.After the World War I, the French Navy remained the 4th in the world, after the British, US and Japanese navies, but the Italian Navy, considered as the main enemy, was close. This order of fleets, with the French Navy equal to the Italian Navy, was sanctioned by the 1922 Washington Naval Treaty.Every naval fleet consists of a variety of ships of different sizes, and no fleet has enough resources to make every vessel supreme in its class. Nonetheless, different countries strive to excel in particular classes. Between the world wars, the French fleet was remarkable in its building of small numbers of ships that were "over the top" with relation to their equivalents of other powers. For example, the French chose to build "super-destroyers" which were deemed during the Second World War by the Allies as the equivalent of light cruisers. The Le Fantasque class of destroyer is still the world's fastest class of destroyer. The Surcouf submarine was the largest and most powerful of its day. The Dunkerque class battleships, designed specially to fight the German so-called pocket battleships, were, in spite of their relatively small size, very well-balanced designs and precursors of a new fast battleship generation in the world. The Richelieu class full-size battleships are considered by some experts as most successful battleships, built under displacement limits of Washington Treaty in the world.
  • Australian Navy tribute - War heroes song. Australian Navy tribute - War heroes song The Royal Australian Navy (RAN) is the naval branch of the Australian Defence Force. Established in 1901, the RAN was formed out of the Commonwealth Naval Forces to become the small navy of Australia after federation, consisting of the former colonial navies of the new Australian states. The Royal Navy of the United Kingdom continued to provide blue-water defence in the Pacific until World War II, when expansion of the RAN saw the acquisition of aircraft carriers, and other large surface vessels. Today the RAN is one of the largest naval forces in the Pacific region and has a significant presence in the Indian Ocean, and has undertaken operations in support of military campaigns and peacekeeping missions worldwide. During WW1 the RAN was initially responsible for capturing many of Germany's colonies in the South Pacific and protecting Australian shipping from the German East Asia Squadron. For the remainder of the war most of the RAN's major ships operated as part of Royal Navy forces in the Mediterranean and North Seas. During the 1920s and early 1930s the Royal Australian Navy was greatly reduced in size. As international tensions increased, however, the RAN was modernised and expanded. During the early years of WW2 ships from the RAN again operated as part of the Royal Navy, with RAN ships serving with distinction in the Mediterranean. Following the outbreak of the Pacific War and the virtual destruction of the Royal Navy force ...

  • Korean Navies Exchange Gunfire .Naval gunfire exchange SEOUL, South Korea A badly damaged North Korean patrol ship retreated in flames Tuesday after a skirmish with a South Korean naval vessel along their disputed western coast, the first such clash in seven years, South Korean officials said. There were no South Korean casualties, the country's Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement, and it was not immediately clear if there were any casualties on the North Korean side. Each side blamed the other for violating the sea border. The exchange of fire occurred as US officials said President Barack Obama has decided to send a special envoy to Pyongyang for rare direct talks on the communist country's nuclear weapons program. No date has been set but it would be the first one-on-one talks since Obama took office in January. Obama is due in Seoul next week. "It's a regrettable incident," South Korean Commodore Lee Ki-sik told reporters in Seoul. "We are sternly protesting to North Korea and urging it to prevent the recurrence of similar incidents." North Korea's military issued a statement blaming South Korea for the "grave armed provocation," saying its ships crossed into North Korean territory. The North claimed that a group of South Korean warships opened fire but fled after the North's patrol boat dealt "a prompt retaliatory blow." The statement, carried on the official Korean Central News Agency, said the South should apologize. President Lee Myung-bak, who convened an emergency ...

  • The Royal Navy In WWII Part 03 - 12 The Mediterranean saw a great deal of naval action during World War II. In a struggle which lasted for three years the Royal Navy and Italian Navy battled for control of the sea. The Kriegsmarine also took part in the campaign, primarily through sending U-Boats into the Mediterranean, but also controlling the few remaining Axis naval forces after the Italian surrender. The Mediterranean began the war dominated by the British and French navies with Italy as a neutral power astride communications in the centre of the area. The situation changed vastly with the fall of France and the declaration of war by Italy. In addition the British Mediterranean Fleet based at Alexandria controlling the eastern end of the Mediterranean there was a need to replace French naval power in the west. To do this Force H was formed at Gibraltar. The British Government was still concerned that the remaining French ships would be used by the Axis powers. Consequently they took steps to neutralise it. At Alexandria relations between the French and British commanders, Admirals Godfroy and Cunningham, were good. The French squadron there was impounded in the port. In the western basin things did not go so smoothly. The bulk of the French fleet was at Mers-el-Kebir in North Africa. Force H steamed there to confront the French with terms. Those terms were all rejected and so the French fleet was attacked and heavily damaged by Force H. The Vichy French government broke off all ties with the British as ...

  • US Navy with hands tied, follow North Korean rust bucket North Korea set sail on an aging rust bucket of a ship named the Kang Nam from the port of Nampo (Nampho, South Pyongan Province), with the United States Navy, the ship USS John S. McCain in pursuit. It is believed the Kang Nam has weapons aboard and headed for Burma (Myanmar). This is a violation of a recent United Nations (UN) resolution. Like most resolutions from the UN this one is rather ignorant. The resolution stipulated the Korean ship can not be boarded unless the North Koreans give permission. Yeah right, like that is going to happen. While the navies of the USA and Japan watched North Korea launch a missile over Japan, and just looked. It seems the looking continues as the US Navy is restricted by spineless politicians to just "looking" once again. That nut job, Dear Leader, Kim Jung il of the Hermit Kingdom, the commie nation on the Korean peninsular north of the 38th parallel, is having a good laugh at the expense of the civilized world. The only hope lies with Singapore. It is believed the Kang Nam will need to refuel in Singapore. If the North Koreans refuse to allow the authorities to board the rust bucket, the can deny fuel to the Kang Nam. We can only hope Singapore has the spine the rest of the world as lost. NOTE: Please accept my apology in advance. I will delete any comments posted on this video not related to this video. • Navy Hymn: Eternal Father (Strong to Save) Sung by the Sea Chanters chorus of the US Navy Band. Info from www.history.navy.mil : The song known to United States Navy men and women as the "Navy Hymn," is a musical benediction that long has had a special appeal to seafaring men, particularly in the American Navy and the Royal Navies of the British Commonwealth and which, in more recent years, has become a part of French naval tradition. The original words were written as a hymn by a schoolmaster and clergyman of the Church of England, the Rev. William Whiting. Rev. Whiting (1825-1878) resided on the English coast near the sea and had once survived a furious storm in the Mediterranean. His experiences inspired him to pen the ode, "Eternal Father, Strong to Save." In the following year, 1861, the words were adapted to music by another English clergyman, the Rev. John B. Dykes (1823-1876) , who had originally written the music as "Melita" (ancient name for the Mediterranean island of Malta). Rev. Dykes' name may be recognized as that of the composer given credit for the music to many other well-known hymns, including "Holy, Holy, Holy," "Lead, Kindly Light," "Jesus, Lover of My Soul," and "Nearer, My God to Thee." In the United States, in 1879 the late Rear Adm. Charles Jackson Train, an 1865 graduate of the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis was a lieutenant commander stationed at the Academy in charge of the Midshipman Choir. In that year, Lt. Comdr. Train inaugurated the present practice of concluding each ...

  • Somali Pirates sunk by the Indian Navy Somali pirates operating off the Horn of Africa (East African waters) have accelerated their piracy in recent months. The pirates (no, not Sea Shepherd, but real pirates) have been commandeering merchant ships on the high seas (Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean). The Western nations of Europe, NATO, and the USA have naval ships in the area just watching. The politicians of those nations are trying to determine a course of action hampered by self-imposed rules, law of the sea, international law and treaties. While they were scratching their heads, the pirates continued their dastardly acts. Then out of the ocean blue came the Navy of India who sunk a mother ship of these pirates. Right down to Davy Jones locker went this pirate ship. This video is a salute to the Indian Navy, a navy of action for taking care of business, while the navies of the Western powers have been neutered by their respective politicians.

  • Danish navy rescue pirates Gulf of Aden: Danish navy helps pirates A Danish warship has rescued Thursday to a group of suspected pirates caught in rough waters in the Gulf of Aden. The pirates had an engine failure 90 nautical miles of Yemen and had launched distress signal. Sailors building Absalon, required under international law to respond to the call for help, found weapons on board the boat, similar to those used by pirates operating in the region, announced the command of Danish operations Naval. According to the television channel TV2 News, it would rocket antitank weapons and automatic AK47. The rescued men, who claimed to have drifted for eight days at sea, were handed over to Yemen. Their ship has also been destroyed. The increase in acts of piracy since the beginning of the year has made the Gulf of Aden and the waters surrounding the most dangerous road in the world, which led navies around the world to deploy warships to ensure safety of commercial vessels. Denmark has taken on September 15 the command of a multinational naval force, whose purpose is to hunt pirates and smugglers of weapons of the northern part of the Indian Ocean.
