  • Beck Technology - DProfiler November 2009 FAQ series - Non-CoplanarFaces Non-CoplanarFaces Typically I am able to identify a coplanar face on a Building Massing/Feature while modifying a face, or add/subtracting a Massing. Sometimes I am unable to get the coplanar indicator so I pick what appears to be coplanar and I get a line separating into two faces. How come this happens? The inability to display a coplanar indicator is due to the fact that the two faces are NOT coplanar. This may seem obvious in definition but less apparent in the modeling environment. When a Building Massing/Feature is drawn freehand many times care is not taken to insure the corners of the Building Massing/Feature are perpendicular. When corners are not perpendicular non-coplanar faces are inevitable, though it can be so subtle that the faces appear coplanar. If the face is moved to a position close to coplanar and picked a separating line does appear since the two faces are in fact at different angles. There is a way to correct a face that is not coplanar to another face, which is demonstrated in the video. www.beck-
  • SketchUp Tips and Tricks: A Good Reason to Color Segments "By Axes" Connecting coplanar segments will automatically create a surface in Google SketchUp... but you may run into a situation where a face doesn't materialize where it looks like it should. This is usually because segments are not coplanar. In some situations setting your segment color to "by axes" from the Styles manager can help identify non-planar segments.
  • The Polygon The polygon is the basic building block of all 3d models. Here we discover its properties, like the face normal, which shows the direction the polygon is facing and it's three components the face, edge and vertex. Complicated objects are made of lots of polygons put together. *Edit, the terms "Planar" and "Non Planar" should be "Coplanar" and "Non Coplanar" respectively. (Intersection) Lines and planes, we'll rearrange and you will be fine! (Intersection) So grab a book and take a look and have a good time! When lines, they come together, they could be different, the same, or parallel Only same and non-skew lines connect! Yahoo! (It's an intersection!) Yahoo (It's an intersection!) Now we add in planes, let's go! (It's an intersection) They meet lines in ways, it's so! • Curved Surfaces in Google SketchUp This is some kind of a tutorial of how i prefer to do this. 1: Create desired contour lines in 2 projections. And make a group from them. 2: Craete desired profile in 3-rd projection (quarter-circle arc in this case). 3: Create additional "helper-plane" which i use to scale the sections more easily. And make it a group 4: Copy this plane along the axis of the first 2 contours. The more copies u'll do the more detailed your surface will be. 5: This auxiliary planes will be used for [push-pull]ing and scaling the profile(or section) along the contour-lines more easily. 6: Start by copying and scaling the first profile (arc in this case) on the first plane. (by referencing the black dots where the contour-lines intersect the plane) 7: When scaling is complete [push-pull] the profile to the next plane and rescale as needed. 8: To see the profile more clearly, delete or hide the planes that you used already. 9: Delete all unnecessary geometry and smooth the remaining lines.
