  • Optical Fibres Check us out at An optical fiber is made up of the core (carrying the light pulses), the cladding (reflecting the light pulses back into the core) and the buffer coating (protecting the core and cladding from moisture, damage, etc). Together, all of this creates a fiber optic which can carry up to 10 million messages at any time using light pulses. Fiber optics is the overlap of applied science and engineering concerned with the design and application of optical fibers. Optical fibers are widely used in fiber-optic communications, which permits transmission over longer distances and at higher bandwidths (data rates) than other forms of communications. Fibers are used instead of metal wires because signals travel along them with less loss and are also immune to electromagnetic interference. Fibers are also used for illumination, and are wrapped in bundles so they can be used to carry images, thus allowing viewing in tight spaces. Specially designed fibers are used for a variety of other applications, including sensors and fiber lasers. Light is kept in the core of the optical fiber by total internal reflection. This causes the fiber to act as a waveguide. Fibers which support many propagation paths or transverse modes are called multi-mode fibers (MMF), while those which can only support a single mode are called single-mode fibers (SMF). Multi-mode fibers generally have a larger core diameter, and are used for short-distance communication links and for ...

  • Center Point Optics Field Test A few weeks back, I won a FREE rifle scope from Center Point Optics... It's an Adventure Class 3-9x50mm scope with AO Paralax adjustment and Illuminated Red/Green Mil-Dot reticle... I mounted it on my GAMO Whisper Air Rifle and figured I'd make a little field test video to show how well it's been holding up... I start off with a couple of targets @ 30 yards, then adjust elevation and shoot another target @ 100 yards, then I adjust back to the 30 yard zero and take a few more shots... All shots were taken at center reticle using Crosman Premier Hollow Point pellets... A big thanx goes out to Josh and everyone else at Center Point Optics for running the scope giveaway contest... Great Company!!
  • Optics and Communications A video from the New Zealand E=Mc2 website regarding optics and Communications at the University of Auckland. Source- www.eequalsmcsquared.auckland.ac.nz 'Many of the applications of lasers depend upon their particular properties which distinguish them from conventional light sources. The key differences which can be exploited are generally described by referring to their coherence which is much greater than that of other sources. This involves both spatial coherence and temporal coherence. Spatial coherence refers to the effect whereby the laser beam behaves as if it came from a point source, while conventional sources are "spread out" in space, consequently laser beams can be focussed into extremely small areas. Temporal coherence refers to the fact that laser beams have a very narrow spectral width-loosely speaking only one colour is present. This video describes a number of applications of lasers including laser induced fluorescence work in the Physics Department (the French agent Alain Marfart's print was detected on a chart taken from the yacht "Ouvea" which brought the Rainbow Warrior bombers to Auckland in 1985 - this was the first use of laser fingerprint detection in New Zealand). This work uses a "light pipe" to convey the light to the sample, other applications of optical fibres include ultra high speed communications systems research, and the spinoff company from the University which this research has generated.'

  • Laser Electro-Optics Technology www.tstc.edu Researchers predict laser technology will play a dominant role during the 21st century and beyond, continuously changing the world through advances in laser applications and uses. Just consider how far this amazing instrument has come since its creation more than 30 years ago. The word LASER, now common, is actually an acronym for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. The modern-day laser is a tool so delicate it can repair a damaged eye without anesthesia ... an instrument so powerful it can pierce a diamond ... a device so accurate that it can measure, to within 1 centimeter, the astronomical distance from the Earth to the moon. With a vision for the future, Texas State Technical College developed the nation's first Laser Electro-Optics Technology program in 1969. As a student in the two-year LET degree program, you can prepare for a challenging career as a laser optics technician, using some of industry's finest laboratory equipment valued at more than $40 million. You come into contact with lasers more than you realize. For instance, your compact disc player, computerized video game and the scanner at your local grocery store all produce both high-quality and definite results because of lasers. As a graduate of the LET program, you can look forward to exciting, rewarding and high-paying career opportunities in science, medicine and other industries. As a graduate of the LET program, your job responsibilities may include installing high ...

  • PhotoTechEDU Day 30: Imaging optics for the next decade Google Tech Talks November, 7 2007 Digital cameras in their many forms will continue to be one of the primary drivers towards new technologies in optics as well as improvements of classical technologies. This has been well illustrated in the past 5-10 years which has seen, for example, the development of compression molded glass aspheric lenses for improved performance and packaging. The incorporation of injection molded plastic lenses and possibly hybrid refractive/diffractive surfaces will grow. Furthermore, as the trend continues towards smaller pixels as well as more pixels in a given sensor, the imaging optics will be further driven towards higher image quality. Zoom lenses will increase in their zoom range, yet there will be a continuing emphasis towards smaller and smaller packaging. The optics and their associated mechanics will need to be more robust with respect to stray light such as flare, glare, ghost images, and other undesirable image anomalies. And our optics must be more robust with respect to environmental effects such as thermal soaks and gradients. And with all of the above, customers will want lower cost too. It is going to be a fun ride over the next 5-10 years so fasten your seat belt and hold on real tight to the safety bar! Speaker: Robert E. Fischer, CEO OPTICS 1, Inc. Westlake Village, CA Bob Fisher is CEO of Optics 1, a past president of the SPIE, and a winner of that society's highest award, the Gold Medal for outstanding engineering or ...
