  • The First Steps of International Center for Arts and Music in Ouidah, Benin. Benin, Africa. The Ouidah International Center for Art and Music (Centre International d'Art et Musique de Ouidah, CIAMO) has opened in Benin, Africa, with a goal of providing art and music education to primary school children and teachers, and to offer professional development seminars to area artists. The first school of its kind in the country, Ouidah International Center for Art and Music will offer music and art classes (folk, traditional and modern) taught by a variety of resident and visiting international professionals, and the school itself will be staffed by American teachers funded by the United States Peace Corps, electric guitarist Leni Stern, and a variety of local artists. The art and music school will teach 300 children and art and music will be part of the daily curriculum, free to all children. It is similar to the art and music model we have in the US for public school students where children in elementary schools have exposure to art and music as part of their curriculum. The Ouidah International Center for Art and Music will be a collaboration between the community , the teachers of the school, and US-based teachers, teaching a variety of styles including those that are native to Benin. We will also be using the school as a model for primary school teacher training throughout Benin so that teachers throughout the country can improve their arts and music teaching skills.

We set up our mosquito nets, which we had become quite skilled at over the span of our trip, and relaxed to a good book and an early night sleep. We soon found out that as the sun set, the voodoo culture awakened. All around us, we could here the spellbinding chants accompanied by a magical drum beat and other unique instruments. It was a very familiar sound and surprisingly, it reminded me of south american music I had heard before. The next day, as planned, we woke up early to embark on our journey to the beach along le route des esclaves, a dirt road that had once served as the pathway walked by slaves to the beach where the ships awaited their ...

  • BBtv WORLD: Roots of Voudun and Slavery's Legacy in Ouidah BBtv online: Today's Boing Boing tv is an installment of our ongoing BBtv WORLD series, in which we bring you first-person glimpses of life around the globe. From the 17th to 19th centuries, millions of African people were sold into slavery, transported on ships to the Americas. With them came spiritual traditions including Voudun, which we now know as voodoo. Its roots are in the Dahomey kingdom on the West Coast of Africa, now the country of Benin. In todays episode, I travel to Benins port city of Ouidah, one of the most important slave trade ports, and a center of the Vodoun religion. We visit the Temple of Pythons and learn about Voudun religious practices, and witness some of the most important sites in the history of the slave trade. We walk along a beach that was the single most highly-trafficked embarkation point for West African slaves headed over the Atlantic to the Americas. One million people were forced on to ships here, many transported to Haiti and Brazil, where Voudun transmuted into voodoo and Candomblé. Outsiders called this region the Slave Coast. Ouidah's residents today call the former boarding platform on this otherwise idyllic beach the Gate of No Return. -- XJ

  • Supreme Vodoun - Road to Ouidah The Universal Day of Vodoun is an Annual Celebration of Africa's Oldest Traditional Religion & Culture: Vodoun. Vodoun derives from the Fon Expression "Vo Bo Doun" meaning "Draw Energy from the Source of Creation Fearlessly" or "Honour your God Fearlessly" and also the "Unknown, Invisible Force". Vodoun has been practiced in Africa and most of the Ancient World for between 300000 to 600000 years in its current form under various names. It is a very complex system of Cults, each governed by Natural or Universal Elements, Deities, Spirits, Ancestors etc... Vodoun only has one Supreme God: Mawu. The Source of all creation which dwells in the center of the Cosmos. The Source Mawu also lives in all things that vibrate, it is the sum total of all that exists, visible and invisible. The Cosmos is made of several Superuniverses and each is subdivided into local Universes, Galaxies, Solar Systems, inhabited or empty Worlds, frequencies, molecules, atoms all the way down to the sub-atomic particles. In vodoun we believe that the Universe is ruled by proxies (Elements, Angels, Saints, Governors) of the Supreme God Mawu, that manage all of its aspects such as the Stars, Skies, the Seas, Earth, the Fire, Volcanos, Rivers, Lakes, the Rain, Thunder/Lightning, the Flora, the Fauna, the Air, Health, Climate, and every and anything that is a natural or super-natural phenomena is governed by a Vodoun Deity. Even certain abstract virtues like Success, Prosperity, Wealth, Power are governed ...
  • Voodoo Ceremony - Ouidah Benin (from ) We were invited to this ceremony by the priest at the Snake Temple in Ouidah, where the pythons are released to slither off into the town and visit residents at night. The ceremony was held at a nearby temple and was to welcome some new adepts, or apprentices into the voodoo family. The children were aged around 5 to 7 years old and you can see them dancing towards the end of the clip. We were there for a few hours but the time flew by - the hypnotic drumming induces a trance like state. We were the only foreigners present- this was a ceremony for locals not something put on for the benefit of tourists. Unfortunately we had to leave before the end - we'd borrowed a rusty old chinese motorbike with no headlamp and had to travel 10 miles back down an unlit, sandy track, so driving at night wasn't a good option!
