  • Παρθενών ( The Parthenon ) The Parthenon (Ancient Greek: Παρθενών) is a temple in the Athenian Acropolis, Greece, dedicated to the Greek goddess Athena, whom the people of Athens considered their protector. Its construction began in 447 BC and was completed in 438 BC, although decorations of the Parthenon continued until 431 BC. It is the most important surviving building of Classical Greece, generally considered to be the culmination of the development of the Doric order. Its decorative sculptures are considered some of the high points of Greek art. The Parthenon is regarded as an enduring symbol of Ancient Greece and of Athenian democracy and one of the world's greatest cultural monuments. The Greek Ministry of Culture is currently carrying out a programme of selective restoration and reconstruction to ensure the stability of the partially ruined structure. The Parthenon itself replaced an older temple of Athena, which historians call the Pre-Parthenon or Older Parthenon, that was destroyed in the Persian invasion of 480 BC. Like most Greek temples, the Parthenon was used as a treasury. For a time, it served as the treasury of the Delian League, which later became the Athenian Empire. In the 6th century AD, the Parthenon was converted into a Christian church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. After the Ottoman Turk conquest, it was turned into a mosque in the early 1460s, and it had a minaret built in it. On 26 September 1687, an Ottoman Turk ammunition dump inside the building was ignited by Venetian ...
  • "Glory of the Parthenon" A clip from "Glory of the Parthenon" (Composition For Lyre In The Ancient Greek Phrygian Mode). This track is from my new album, "The Ancient Greek Modes"... The concept of this album, is to recreate the both the sounds of the musical modes once used in Ancient Greece (as described in the writings of Plato & Aristotle) & to restore the lost sounds of the ancient Greek Kithara - the large wooden lyre once favoured by the professional musicians of Ancient Greece... THE ANCIENT GREEK MODES The names of musical modes in use today, (eg Dorian, Mixolydian etc) although having the same names as the original Greek musical modes, were actually misnamed during the Middle Ages! Apparently, the Greeks counted intervals from top to bottom. When medieval ecclesiastical scholars tried to interpret the ancient texts, they counted from bottom to top, jumbling the information. The misnamed medieval modes are only distinguished by the ancient Greek modes of the same name, by being labelled Church Modes. It was due to a misinterpretation of the Latin texts of Boethius, that medieval modes were given the wrong Greek names! According to an article on Greece in the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, the original ancient Greek names for species of the octave included the following (on white keys): BB: Mixolydian EE: Dorian AA: Hypodorian DD: Phrygian GG: Hypophrygian CC: Lydian FF: Hypolydian For what Plato & Aristotle themselves had this to say about these ancient musical modes ...

  • Ancient Art Podcast 11a, Parthenon Frieze Part 2 (Episode split into 2 parts for YouTube: 11a and 11b.) In this part of multiple episodes focusing on the Parthenon Frieze and its relationship with the Persian Apadana reliefs at Persepolis, we investigate the evidence for the transmission of ideas from Persia to Greece by way of the Ionian Greek artists, who plied their trade throughout the Mediterranean. Well look closely at an important transitional piece, the so-called Harpy Tomb at Xanthos in Lycia, as well as a couple Persian imperial sites, Susa and Persepolis, before turning westward to Athens. Well also examine the role of Persian monumental art and architecture and reveal the Greek stylistic influence passed on to Persia by the Ionian artists.

  • Italy Returns Parthenon Marbles to Greece Good news for the supporters of the campaign to return the Elgin Marbles to Greece. The AP reports that Italian authorities restored to Greece a marble sculpture originally from the Parthenon. Lord Elgin took the now returned statue from the Parthenon in the early 1800s, and gave it to an Italian friend on his return trip to England. The Vatican has also agreed to return two Parthenon Marbles in its own possession. This gesture by the Italians sparks hope that the rest of the collection now residing in London will be returned.

  • Lord Elgin and the Parthenon Marbles Please Spread the video, helps to return the Parthenon Marbles. Of the 97 extant stones from the Parthenon frieze, 56 are in London and 40 in Athens. Of the 64 extant metopes, 48 are located in Athens and 15 in London. Of the 28 extant forms of pediments, 19 are in London and 9 in Athens. After almost 200 years, it is time to do the right thing. It is time to give the Greeks what is rightfully and historically theirs. It is time to return the Parthenon marbles to Athens, and to be exhibited at the new museum which have been built just for this purpose next to the temple they were located for over 2200 years.
  • Building the Parthenon A video with the still pics taken during the construction of this awesome greek monument. I left everything in there, including a couple of design mistakes, later rectified. Building took place on peaceful mode, majority of materials used were dig out by hand. I had enough stone to build everything, but I realized smooth stone doesnt look very good, so i switched to wool, used instead of marble. I edited in the wool, took a couple thousand units so had no intention to punch sheep for next quadrillion years to get it. Obsidian was used were friezes suppose to be and gold ore for the big east and west frieze on the roof. Gold blocks for the dais and gold ore was also edited in, my world is very poor on gold. Building is an exact replica, at 1.5:1 scale, 50% bigger than in reality. Exact is a loosely used term, since one can place blocks only with 1 meter (3 feet) accuracy. I kept however the proportions of the real thing, 9:4. Final dimensions: 47 wide x 99long x 29 height in the middle. Took aproximately 6 weeks to build.
