  • With Bedbugs, Some People See Pests, Others See Profits I'm Alex Villarreal with the VOA Special English Economics Report, from | http They are not even five millimeters long and cannot fly or jump. Yet bedbugs strike fear in homeowners and business owners. Well, not all business owners. Some see money in these little bloodsuckers. Missy Henriksen speaks for the National Pest Management Association. She says they are now seeing bedbugs in unusual places: schools and hospitals, store and movie theaters. So, as the numbers have grown, those bed bugs are spreading out and traveling along with people.New York and other cities have outbreaks. But the United States is not the only country affected. Jeff White is an insect expert who hosts Bed Bug TV on the website BedBug Central. He says the lack of public awareness has caused this rapid expansion of bedbug infestations. Mr. White says bedbugs nearly disappeared from the United States for fifty or sixty years. Now researchers are looking for faster, safer ways to control them without the kinds of poisons used in the past. The name is misleading. Bedbugs do not just live in beds. Mr. White says they can survive for a year without food -- that is, blood. In September, an industry event called BedBug University's North American Summit 2010 took place near Chicago, Illinois. More than three hundred sixty people attended the two-day meeting. The industry says bedbugs are the most difficult pest to control. Treatments can cost from several hundred dollars to thousands ...

OK, you can either read FAO Forestry Paper 164, Guide to implementation of phytosanitary standards in forestry, or watch the video: Our world has become more global, with greater access to world markets from more places on earth. But with it comes an increase in the transport and introduction of invasive bugs -- these invasive pests can lead to agricultural and economic disaster if left unchecked and unmonitored. The UN Food and Agricultural organization, or FAO works on a global scale with nations and organizations worldwide to stem the movement of these bugs and pests. • Integrated Pest Management Can Increase Crop Production I'm Alex Villarreal with the VOA Special English Agriculture Report, from | http Farmers know that if you reduce harmful insects and diseases in your crops, you have a chance for a better harvest. Today, many farmers and experts praise Integrated Pest Management, or IPM. IPM is a series of choices and methods to control insects, diseases and fungi. The program provides current information on how pests live and act in the environment. A number of non-governmental and other organizations in many countries provide education in IPM. Farmers can get information meant for the needs of their own land. They can learn to recognize possible problems and how to plan crops to help prevent failures.Paul Jepson heads the Integrated Plant Protection Center at Oregon State University. He says farmers who have attended field schools in Asia and Africa have increased the use of IPM. And he says this has cut pesticide use. James Frederick is an IPM expert with Clemson University's Pee Dee Research and Educational Center in South Carolina. He says one basic IPM method is to plant as early in the season as possible so that most of the crop will be in by the time a disease or pest arrives. Not all insects are pests. Some are helpful. IPM programs help farmers learn to identify different kinds.Another IPM method is rotating crops. Farmers do not plant the same crop season after season in the same soil. Instead, they may plant corn one season, soybeans the next, then corn ...

  • Pests - pear midge maggots In this imperfect world, there are many problems. Hey , you already knew that! In the context of tree fruit growing, there are many and various pests and diseases which (like the pear midge) can destroy your whole crop. I plan to put up a few videos about some of the more common problems. There is ethical and scientific controversy about how best to manage pest and disease problems. Basically there are 2 approaches-organic and conventional. There is some overlap, for example organic growers use some pesticides and conventional growers use methods like pheremone traps (for codling moth and plum maggot-I will deal with this later) which are 'organic' etc. This is a big debate and there is a lot of technical information and strong feelings. We need to stick to the facts and do more and better research, which IMHO should be government or not-for-profit foundation funded as big pharma will only research stuff it hopes to make money from, whereas the world needs cheap, safe, sustainable solutions to pests and diseases of food plants which don't need too much high tech. I do NOT offer specific advice on how to control pests and diseases (not least for legal reasons) apart from study the facts, obey local laws, and SEVEN TIMES follow the instructions with any pesticides you use, but as a service to fellow fruit growers I share the information from my litle English orchard for what its worth. Anyone got any useful pest control information or resources, feel free to share it. Pear ...

  • Victor Pest Rodent Control Traps Using traps for rodent control is an easy, cost-effective way of dealing with a rodent infestation. Trapping mice with snap traps is a reliable way to remove mice and rodents from your home. Rodent control traps, such as the wooden snap trap, not only traps the mouse but also kills the mouse instantly with a kill bar or other mechanism. Snap traps do not contain the mouse in any way as they are constructed with one flat piece of wood and a spring bar. There are other types of rodent control traps which keep odors, dirt and bodily fluids within a box-like structure after trapping the mice. These traps produce death via electrocution with an electric shock. They provide a quick, humane kill and are easy to set up and use. Multi-kill rodent control traps are able to capture one mouse after another. Some traps can hold up to 30 mice at once! There is also the option of using live rodent control traps which do not have any kill mechanisms and allow you to catch and release the mice to a new location. Glue traps are cost-effective options that are extremely easy to use for trapping mice. They even trap scorpions, snakes, spiders and other insects! The most important thing to remember when using rodent control traps is good trap placement. Place your trap near high activity rodent areas. Placing traps every 10 feet may appear to make sense for protecting a room, but is ineffective if mouse activity is located in one small area of your room. The most common ...

  • Biodiversity and pest control: organic vs conventional farms Around one third of the food ever grown is destroyed by pests or pathogens. Part of the food security challenge is to grow food using less inputs, such pesticides. Synthetic pesticides are a formidable weapon against maurading pests and may ensure a more certain harvest; equally, biological control using natural predators can render chemicals unnecessary. But there are relatively few studies that directly compare both techniques at the farm level. Hence, Professor Jane Memmott and colleagues at the University of Bristol decided to look at the differences in biodiversity between conventional and organic farms at the farm-scale, and then see which was better at controlling pests.
