He produced a number of religious masterpieces in the form of frescoes and paintings. He was also a great painter of real, everyday life, offering a few paintings of real intensity to posterity. His work included many religious paintings including the frescoes in the church of Sta Maria dei Mirocoli , Saronno near the city of Milan. "(born c. 1480/85—died 1532, Milan) Italian painter active in Milan. Little is known of his life. His earliest surviving works are a polyptych in a church near Como (c. 1510) and a fresco, Madonna and Child (1512), at the Cistercian monastery of Chiravalle, near Milan. Working in the Renaissance style, he was a prominent follower of Leonardo da Vinci in Lombardy; many of Luini's frescoes and altarpieces are in Lombardy churches. He also painted mythological subjects, most notably a Europa and a Cephalus and Procris (c. 1520), originally for a Milanese palace."

  • Spotlight Spotlight is an installation of 16 interactive portraits. Each portrait has a set of 9 "temporal gestures" - photographic-quality sequences of human gestures such as "looking up". The portraits are networked, and placed in a 4X4 layout. Every few seconds, a randomly selected portrait is looking towards a neighboring portrait. In turn, the neighboring portrait will look back. To a viewer of the installation, these "random discussions" create a sense of "social dynamics". The viewer can interrupt the group dynamics at any time, by selecting one of the 16 portraits. The remaining 15 portraits automatically react and direct their attention to the viewer-selected portrait, which reacts with a special gesture - "being the center of attention". Spotlight is about an artist's ability to create a new meaning using the combination of interactive portraits and diptych or polyptych layouts. The mere placement of two or more portraits near each other is a known technique to create a new meaning in the viewer's mind. Spotlight takes this concept into the interactive domain, creating interactive portraits that are aware of each other's state and gesture. So not only the visual layout, but also the interaction with others creates a new meaning for the viewer. Using a combination of interaction techniques, Spotlight engages the viewer at two levels. At the group level, the viewer influences the portraits "social dynamics". At the individual level, a portrait's "temporal gestures" expose ...

  • http://www.elenideli.gr A few words on the composite canvas and on my approach to my work in general. This polyptych started from a very small painting. In the past, I have always resisted the notion of the 'finished work', choosing to incorporate 'incompletion' in many of my works in the form of blank or unspecified areas. My intention was to convey the sense of 'the unprocessable', of a dimension that remains uncooperative or indifferent to the artist's intent. I find this imparts a kind of anticipation, functioning as a promise of future completion or of some kind of revelation. This promised revelation can only concern the distortions which a specific form undergoes in the process of changing. So, I started chronicling these changes by working on new canvasses that were set adjacent to the initial one. The question was what might these added canvasses represent? There was the risk of a verbose, endless repetition of a statement already made through much less elaborate means. It was an alluring trap, both because of the subject matter and the dimensions involved. My response was to conceive of the many separate canvasses as a unitary act, and to chart my course along a set of guiding questions: How could the defining form ( or colors or aspects ) of the initial canvas become an auxiliary or component part in a larger composition that moved toward a different direction? How could those same elements be further fortified or accentuated, given that larger dimensions weaken the form(s) which, as ...

Simone Martini -Biography- Simone Martini (c. 1284 -- 1344) was an Italian painter born in Siena. He was a major figure in the development of early Italian painting and greatly influenced the development of the International Gothic style. It is thought that Martini was a pupil of Duccio di Buoninsegna, the leading Sienese painter of his time. Giorgio Vasari stated Simone was a pupil of Giotto di Bondone the most famous painter from Florence with whom he went to Rome to paint at old St. Peter's Basilica, Giotto also executing a mosaic there. Simones brother-in-law was the artist Lippo Memmi. Very little documentation survives regarding Simone's life, and many attributions are debated by art historians. Simone Simone Martini died while in the service of the Papal court at Avignon in 1344. Simone was doubtlessly apprenticed from an early age, as would have been the normal practice. Among his first documented works is the Maestà of 1315 in the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena. A copy of the work, executed shortly thereafter by Lippo Memmi in San Gimignano, testifies to the enduring influence Simone's prototypes would have on other ...

  • Lamb of God (als ich can) Lamb of God or adoration of the Lamb is an altarpiece painted by Hubert van Eyck en finished by his brother Jan van Eyck. The Ghent Altarpiece or Adoration of the mystic Lamb is a very large and complex early Netherlandish polyptych panel painting which is considered to be one of Belgium's masterpieces and one of the world's treasures. It was once in the Joost Vijdt chapel at Saint Bavo Cathedral, Ghent, Belgium, but was later moved for security reasons to the chapel of the cathedral. Commissioned by the wealthy merchant and financier Joost Vijdt for his and his wife's private chapel, it was begun by Hubert van Eyck, who died in 1426 whilst work was underway, and completed by his younger brother Jan van Eyck. The altarpiece represented a "new conception of art", in which the idealization of the medieval tradition gave way to an exacting observation of nature. The Ghent altarpiece consists of a total of 24 compartmented scenes, which make up two views, open and closed. On weekdays the wings were closed, showing the annunciation of Mary and donor portraits of Joost Vijdt and his wife Lysbette Borluut. There used to be an inscription on the frame stating that Hubert van Eyck maior quo nemo repertus (greater than anyone) started the altarpiece, but that Jan van Eyck - calling himself arte secundus (second best in the art) - finished it in 1432. The original, very ornate carved outer frame and surround, presumably harmonizing with the painted tracery, was destroyed during the ...

I wrote this piece for the Trusts Secondary Schools Composers Competition 2009. Obviously the adjudicators thought it wasn't too bad, because I won it! British artist Jamie McCartney has created a monumental wall sculpture showing women's most private parts. The nine metre long polyptych consists of four hundred plaster casts of vulvas, all of them unique, which has been arranged into ten large panels. The age range of the women is from 18 to 76, including mothers and daughters, identical twins, transgendered men and women, as well as a woman pre- and post natal. Described as 'the Vagina Monologues of sculpture', this piece is intended to change the lives of women for good: 'I realised that many women suffer anxiety about their genitals and I was in a unique position to do something about that'. Half a decade since its humble beginnings, the exhibtion is still a success.
