Video Essay Contest Entry Hey guys, i'm Sandra, i'm Genia and we're SanGia from Guelph, ON. and this is my entry for the "Who Inspires U.ca" video contest. A few months ago, we learned about the damaging effects of alcohol, to an unborn child's brain. In Canada, 79% of babies are exposed prenatally to alcohol. Fetal alcohol syndrome, also known as FAS, is a common yet under-recognized condition resulting from mothers consuming alcohol during pregnancy. There is no cure for FAS. However, it can be prevented if you are able to abstain from alcohol during your pregnancy. After extensive research on the internet, we came across the ( ) community and website. We were extremely impressed with the work that FASlink has done to help professionals as well as families who are affected by and living with this disorder. The statistics on the FASlink website are staggering and yet are unknown to the majority of Canadians. We were so deeply affected by the information and testimonials from mothers of children with FAS, that we wrote a song and made a music video hoping that in some small way we would be able to help spread awareness about FAS and bring this invisible disorder to the conscientiousness of our young people. The ...
  • Hope & Health for the Future - LUTO - CHOP (9 of 9) Long-term follow-up for children who have undergone in utero LUTO surgery involves outpatient clinic visits with urology and nephrology, typically every three months for the first year of life, and regularly thereafter to monitor for kidney infections, renal insufficiency and bladder dysfunction. Limited long-term outcome studies following prenatal LUTO surgery are promising: - these pregnancies deliver on average at 35 weeks gestation; - only a third of the children went on to have complications resulting in end-stage renal disease and transplant; and - two-thirds were able to spontaneously void without the need for catheterization.
  • Rebozo use for labour: the hip squeeze Rebozos are a great tool for pregnancy, labour, delivery and parenting. Here Aimée and Jill demonstrate using the rebozo for relieving lower back pain or hip pain prenatally and in labour. It also helps with the progression of labour as it helps to realign the pelvis in a way that helps the baby wiggle down further which in turn can signal the body to produce more oxytocin (the hormone that tells the muscles of the uterus to contract). We also demo how to secure the rebozo in the hip squeeze position so that your hands are free for massage, hand holding, or whatever the mom needs. It's also helpful if the mom wants the hip squeeze *and* wants to be free to walk around. This is my own innovation!

  • Fetal Surgery for Spina Bifida Video -- Considering Fetal Surgery - CHOP - (4 of 12) Learn more at fetalsurgery.chop.edu The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia co-led a landmark clinical trial called the Management of Myelomeningocele Study (MOMS) to evaluate the effectiveness of prenatal fetal surgery for spina bifida as compared to traditional postnatal repair of spina bifida treatment. The nationwide, seven-year prospective, randomized study was performed in order to provide impartial, empirical evidence of the effectiveness of the fetal surgery for spina bifida versus postnatal repair of spina bifida. Study results showed that fetal surgery resulted in significantly reduced need for shunts to reduce fluid build-up in the brain, improved motor function, and increased likelihood of walking independently. This fetal surgery for spina bifida video discusses the factors that determine which patients are candidates for the surgery.

  • How I was diagnosed with Klinefelter's syndrome Information not too many other XXY's are prepared to share, either they don't know, or they were diagnosed prenatally or to them it doesn't matter. Late In 1976 I was diagnosed with Klinefelter's syndrome which was confirmed by Karyotype in 1977. My visible symptoms at the time were very thin build, no musculature, no facial and sparse body hair, female pattern pubic hair, normal penile and scrotal development, small firm testes (or testicles if you prefer?) No breast tissue was present, my span was greater than my height (all these things are relevant), I was not over 6 feet tall, merely 5'8" and I had broader hips than chest. My complexion was very pale, anemic almost. The hidden symptoms revealed by blood tests were elevated LH (Luteinizing Hormone) and FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) and low normal testosterone. LH tells the testes to make testosterone and increases if there is insufficient testosterone production, FSH tells the testes to make sperms and also increases when insufficient sperm is created. By mid 1977 I had testicular failure and had no testosterone production from my testes. I was 16.5 years old. It is estimated I developed Klinefelter's syndrome itself when I was 14 years old. You may be interested to know that testicular volume by age 16 ought to be somewhere between 15 and 25mls volume, mine at age 16 were 1.0mls volume. At that time I had my ejaculate tested and was found to have Azoospermia, which means I had no sperm at all. I began ...

The purpose of this lecture is to provide a basic overview of what we know about the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure. It is certainly not meant to be comprehensive but rather to give a broad overview of current knowledge in the area, and of ongoing human and animal research in the area. Heavy prenatal alcohol exposure can result in the fetal alcohol syndrome and both changes in brain structure and behavior have been reported in these children. Importantly, current data indicate that individuals exposed to heavy doses of alcohol in utero, but without the facial characteristics of FAS, can also suffer from similar brain and behavioral changes. Animal models have proven to be an excellent research tool in this field, as there appears to be good concordance between the animal and human data. The animal models provide a means to examine mechanisms of alcohol damage, to control for factors not ...

  • Foster Parents-Meth Training Video As their parents get sucked into the Meth world, children are often the victims. The chaotic environment, potential for witnessing or experiencing violence, and possible contamination of the environment from a Meth lab or excessive amounts of use in the home or family vehicle can add up to a dangerous situation for the innocent children. Because of these dangers, the children often end up being removed from the home and placed into foster care. Once in alternate care, these children often have unique needs and issues that foster parents will need to deal with. This video can serve as a training video to foster parents and potential foster parents. Topics addressed in the video include prenatal Meth exposure and its effect on infants and older children, neglect in Meth homes, and the effect of such neglect on the child's development. Current foster parents discuss their first experience with a Meth-exposed infant and their concerns for the safety of these children, and their own children due to contamination of items brought into their home from the environment of the Meth-exposed children. For more information on the effects of Meth on children, see our website: This video is one in a series of Meth education training videos. • Bella Santorum has Trisomy 18. What is that? Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum is reportedly back on the campaign trail Monday after taking time away this weekend as his 3-year-old daughter Isabella was hospitalized with pneumonia. A supporter of Republican presidential hopeful and former senator Rick Santorum wears a pin with a photo of Bella Santorum. (Andrew Burton - Getty Images) Isabella, or "Bella," was born with a genetic disorder known as Trisomy 18, which means that she has three copies of the 18th chromosome instead of two. That causes abnormalities in the development of the brain, heart and other internal organs, says Robert Marion, chief of genetics and developmental medicine at the Children's Hospital at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, New York. Almost half the children born with the condition die within the first three months of life, Marion notes. "Ninety percent die in the first year," he says, "And the ten percent who survive have severe developmental problems." Trisomy 18 is "similar in etiology" to Down Syndrome, also known as Trisomy 21, Marion explains, though the latter is generally less severe than Trisomy 18. The risk of conceiving a baby with either condition (and another genetic disorder called Trisomy 13) rises with advancing maternal age. Marion says about 1 in 5000 to 1 in 10000 live-born children have Trisomy 18. Marion adds that Trisomy 18 is "almost always diagnosed prenatally, and those pregnancies are almost always terminated." Even when pregnancy is continued ...
  • Karen Létourneau on detecting fetal heart abnormalities TEDx Manitoba features St. Boniface Hospital sonographer Every year in Manitoba, between 4 and 6 babies were dying due to an abnormality in their heart that wasn't detected. Their heart problem wasn't picked up prenatally during a routine ultrasound, or before they left the hospital. Karen Létourneau, an assistant charge sonographer in the ultrasound department at St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba, is the principal investigator in a six-year research project, "Sonographic Fetal Heart Screening in Manitoba", which has allowed expecting mothers to better prepare for the arrival of their baby - and in many cases avert severe complications or even death. "What we did was improve the basic screen that we were already doing, all across Manitoba. We only asked of ourselves to do the basics -- better." says Létourneau. "We have to be vigilant, all the time, expecting that in every single obstetric exam there could be an abnormal heart. Since we started doing this, not one baby has died. We are saving lives." Létourneau is a five-time winner of the "Excellence in Ultrasound" award, a national competition organized by the Canadian Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers and has been invited to speak at numerous national ultrasound conferences and at Provincial Ultrasound rounds every year since 2001. Karen has also been published in Canadian, American and British medical journals. Karen worked as a radiology technologist for 20 years before pursuing ultrasound in 2000 ...

  • Postnatal Surgery for Spina Bifida - CHOP (9 of 12) Learn more at fetalsurgery.chop.edu For some families, due to choice or health or other factors, postnatal surgery for spina bifida is the right option. In those cases, the mother and baby can be monitored at home and monthly ultrasound and pregnancy updates are monitored by CHOP. Mothers return to CHOP around 37 weeks gestation and delivery takes place by cesarean section. The baby is evaluated by the multidisciplinary team of experts and postnatal surgery for spina bifida is performed within 24-48 hours after birth. Mother and baby remain close to one another because the surgery suite is located in the same facility where the mother is recovering from birth.
