Christine McGourty takes a look at the beautifully preserved primate fossil. The preservation is so good, it is possible to see the outline of its fur and even traces of its last meal. The fossil, nicknamed Ida, is claimed to be a "missing link" between today's higher primates - monkeys, apes and humans - and more distant relatives. But some independent experts, awaiting an opportunity to see the new fossil, are sceptical of the claim. And they have been critical of the hype surrounding the presentation of Ida. • Primate Products Inc. exposed on NBC Miami 6 (WTVJ) NBC Miami Exposes Primate Products Inc. Cruelty. By:Jeff Burnside -Internal photos show severely injured primates- The public is getting a rare, if unsettling, glimpse inside an animal research facility right here in South Florida after ten internal photos of severely injured primates fell into the hands of animal activists. When it comes to experimentation on live animals, emotions and opinions run the gamut. Are animals still used unnecessarily? Isn't it worth saving human lives? The ten photos don't answer these questions. But they are certainly sparking a very public debate. Primate Products, located in a non-descript warehouse in Doral, imports primates from around the world and sells them to animal research labs. They're also licensed for research, according to the USDA. The photos depict bloodied, lifeless primates in a surgical setting, deep gashes on skulls, an open wound on an arm, and you can see reddish or inflamed areas on the hindquarters in one photo. The photos got into the hands of animal activist groups, initially The Animal Liberation Investigative Unit, Stop Animal Exploitation Now, and SMASH HLS, who reposted them on various websites. "Yeah, it's horrendous," says Don Anthony, spokesperson for the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida. ARFF and one other group filed formal complaints with federal inspectors over the animal welfare act. "We are demanding that the USDA, the Department of Agriculture, do an immediate and thorough investigation," said ...

  • The Primate Family - Our Evolutionary Relatives evolution.berkeley.edu Humans are part of the primate family. We come from a common ancestor. It would be hubris to say that being on the branch of primates and that of apes is inconsequential. "We admit that we are like apes, but we seldom realise that we are apes." Richard Dawkins The study of human origins can be a paradoxical thing. We know that we evolved from ancestral apes (and, in fact, are just one peculiar kind of ape), yet we are obsessed with the features that distinguish us from our close relatives. The "big questions" in evolutionary anthropology, from why we stand upright to how our brains became so large, are all centered around distancing us from a prehistoric ape baseline. Despite our preoccupation with "human uniqueness", however, many of our traits are extremely ancient, and they can be traced back much further than the seven million years or so that hominins have existed. As acknowledged by paleontologists Blythe Williams, Richard Kay, and Christopher Kirk (who confirmed that Darwinius was only a very distant relative of ours last week) in a new PNAS paper, "human evolution did not begin 6-8 million years ago with the phylogenetic split between the chimpanzee and human lineages." It is not as if the first hominins appeared out of nothing and began an upward march to us. Instead we know that we could hypothetically trace our lineage all the way back to the last common ancestor of all life on earth, and any point we chose to stop along that "unbroken ...

  • Highway Of Life: From Mammals To Primates Science & Reason on Facebook: Evolution (Part 3): Highway of Life (Episode 3): From Mammals To Primates --- Please subscribe to Science & Reason: • • • • --- The earliest mammal-like reptiles, called pelycosaurs ruled the earth for about 40 million years, and gave rise to the therapsids...one step closer to mammals. Therapsids are the direct ancestor of mammals. But before we say good bye to reptiles, let's pause and look down their temporal highway. Their descendants include the crocodilians, the dinosaurs and the birds. Back to our own road, Mammals are directly ahead. It is now 220 million years ago and the cynodonts have arrived on the scene. They have nearly all the features of mammals. Most early mammals were small and shrew-like animals that fed on insects. It is likely that they had a constant body temperature, milk glands for their young, and the beginning of a neocortex region of the brain. But this is also the era of the first dinosaurs, so our ancestors will have to wait for their turn to rule. 125 million years ago, two new developments paralleled each other, marsupials and eutheria. The marsupials would give rise to kangaroos and their cousins, but our line lies with eutheria which have a placenta. The earliest eutheria resembled a small mouse. 90 million years ago, we part lines with the ancestors of elephants and manatees, 85 million years ago, so long to the predecessors of horses ...

  • Our Primate Cousins Photo slideshow of various primates I've worked with at a wild animal park (except the orangutans and gorillas, which were photographed elsewhere). Humans belong to the taxonomic Order Primates, which is comprised of 11 Families, 52 Genera, & 181 species. Primates are divided into two main groups: Prosimians (literally "before monkeys/apes) and Anthropoids (literally "man like"). The evolution of primates is characterized by trends toward mobile limbs, grasping hands, a flattened face, binocular vision, a large, complex brain, & a reduced reproductive rate. Most Primates are well adapted to arboreal living (living in trees). Primate evolution occurred primarily during the Cenozoic Era, Prosimians first branching off in the early Eocene Epoch 58 mya (million years ago). Around 33 mya, during the Oligocene Epoch, the Anthropoids split off into 3 main groups: New World Monkeys (w/prehensile tails), Old World Monkeys (w/out prehensile tails), & the Hominoids (eventual Apes & Humans w/out any tails). In the Miocene Epoch, around 15 mya, Asian Apes & African Apes diverged paths. At approx. 6 mya, African Apes & Human lineage split, producing Hominids (members of the taxonomic Human Family Hominidae) in a region of Central Africa called the Great Rift Valley. There, dense jungle gave way to great savannah plains, & bipedalism became a helpful adaptation in surviving in a high grass environment w/a variety of predators. To this day, Chimpanzees & Humans share 98.5% of the same ...

  • The Primate Fossil Ida - Science Review Paleontologist Tim White and David Micklos discuss Ida (Darwinius masillae), the 47 million year-old primate fossil. • Five Species (Primates) - PREVIEW Purchase: Three species of monkeys and two apes living in their natural habitat in Africa are compared in this video. The monkeys include the veret, the blue monkey and the black and white colobus, while the apes are common chimpanzees and eastern lowland gorillas. This footage, shot by a primatologist, includes nuances of behavior and social interaction which are not usually included in more commercial productions. Many sequences are long enough to allow the observer to watch behavior unfold between animals and learn what kinds of details to look for in live observation. The same types of behavior are recorded for each species (as much as possible) to permit comparisons to be drawn between diet and foraging patterns, infant care, locomotion and predator defense mechanisms. The videos are intended to allow the audience to see the same types of behavior by different species in different habitats and to draw the comparisons themselves. This format provides a condensed view of the life of several species thus emphasizing the variability and the adaptive nature of primates rather than focusing on the details of one form. This is a useful teaching device. The particular areas of interest in this video are the inclusion of the rarely filmed blue monkey, black and white colobus and eastern lowland gorilla, as well as the division of a monkey carcass by the chimpanzees and the interactions between humans and blue monkeys in a park in Nairobi. a video by Anne Zeller ...
