Esomeprazole is the S-enantiomer of omeprazole (marketed as Losec/Prilosec), and AstraZeneca claims improved efficacy of this single enantiomer product over the racemic mixture of omeprazole. However, this greater efficacy has been disputed, with some claiming it offers no benefit from its older form. Common side effects include headache, diarrhea, nausea, gas, decreased appetite, constipation, dry mouth, and abdominal pain. More severe side effects are severe allergic reactions, chest pain, dark urine, fast heartbeat, fever, persistent sore throat, severe stomach pain, unusual bruising or bleeding, unusual tiredness, and yellowing of the eyes or skin. Proton pump inhibitors may be associated with a greater risk of hip fractures, clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea. Patients are frequently administered the drugs in intensive care as a protective measure against ulcers, but this use is also associated with a 30% increase in occurrence of pneumonia

  • Love Story Chemistry Edition Hello YouTubers! So this time we decided to use the song Love Story by Taylor Swift, the audio quality is a little bad in this video but unfortunately there is not so much that we can do about it :( Lyrics: We were both racemic when I first saw you I was an enantiomer and you were the other You're equimolar We had the same properties We had different effects on polarized light See you go through the polarimeter And get rotated Clockwise and anti You were positive You were rotating clockwise The opposite was rotating the other way Then our pairs of isomers can correctly be distinguished Carboxylic acids are really, really, really weak I've got the bases all thats left to do is react You'll make a salt and it will be ionic Its a slow reaction, it is an oate salt Carboxylic acids react with alcohol We formed an ester and a bottle of water Pass the catalyst Such as sulphuric acid Here's an example of esterification And water was removed by the reactants It started with ethanoic acid and some pentan-1-ol Carboxylic acids are really, really, really weak I've got the bases all thats left to do is react You'll make a salt and it will be ionic Its a slow reaction, it is an oate salt Its a weak acid, a little dissociated Its into ions, in solution Carry on reacting, we'll make it out as esters The hydroxyl proton, bit dissociated Esterification Alcohols and carboxylic acids Products were esters When i met you in the 50 ml beaker The O from the ester, came from the alcohol Take the ...

The project was originally called Ritalin, but the name was changed for legal reasons. Methylphenidate (MPH; Ritalin, Concerta, Metadate) is a psychostimulant drug approved for treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome and narcolepsy. Methylphenidate belongs to the piperidine class of compounds and increases the levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain through reuptake inhibition of the monoamine transporters. MPH possesses structural similarities to amphetamine, and though it is less potent, its pharmacological effects are even more closely related to those of cocaine. MPH is most commonly known by the trademark name Ritalin, which is an instant-release racemic mixture, although a variety of formulations and generic brand names exist. Doses prescribed of stimulants above the recommended dose level is associated with higher levels of psychosis, substance misuse and psychiatric admissions. A psychoactive drug, psychopharmaceutical or psychotropic substance is a chemical substance that acts primarily upon the ...

  • Ritalin and Adderall - Study Drugs Clip thanks to It's final exams week and college students are desperate to cram. They turn to their friends who have access to prescription drugs like Ritalin and Adderall for attention deficit disorder. Drugs like these are being increasingly used as study drugs at colleges everywhere. At UCLA, it seems like almost everyone has tried it or heard about it. Some students casually distribute their pills to friends. In this pod, students share their experiences and a UCLA psychiatrist tells us why the overuse of these drugs is a problem, whether or not they are prescribed by a medical doctor. Methylphenidate (Ritalin) is the most commonly prescribed psychostimulant and is indicated in the treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder and narcolepsy, although off-label uses include treating lethargy, depression, neural insult and obesity. It is most commonly known as the brand name Ritalin which is an instant-release racemic mixture, although a variety of brand names, and formulations exist. Methylphenidate is a mild central nervous system stimulant thought to exert its effect by enhancing dopaminergic transmission in the brain. Adderall is a brand-name pharmaceutical psychostimulant composed of mixed amphetamine salts, which is thought to work by increasing the amount of norepinephrine and dopamine in the brain. • Study Drugs for Students - Provigil (Modafinil) Adderall and Ritalin Clip thanks to Provigil (Modafinil) is a memory-improving and mood-brightening psychostimulant. It enhances wakefulness, attention capacity and vigilance. It is thought to work by affecting certain chemicals in the brain that control the sleep/wake cycle. Modafinil does not make up for lack of sleep and should not be used to treat tiredness or hold off sleep in people who do not have a sleep disorder. Increasing numbers of students use modafinil. The benefits of modafinil as a "smart drug" are modest at best. But its consumption at several leading American and British universities is quite common among students seeking a competitive edge in exams, where drugs-testing is not yet routine. Adderall is a brand-name pharmaceutical psychostimulant composed of mixed amphetamine salts, which is thought to work by increasing the amount of norepinephrine and dopamine in the brain. Adderall is widely reported to increase alertness, concentration and overall cognitive performance while decreasing user fatigue. It is available in two formulations: immediate release and extended release (XR). Adderall is also reportedly widely used as a "study drug" at many American universities. Adderall is reported to help focus energy and concentration to a much higher level than normal. It enables the user to focus and stay awake. Stories of students writing papers continuously for an unusually long time, or "cramming" all night for an exam with no loss of energy or concentration ...

  • 25. Models in 3D Space (1869-1877); Optical Isomers Freshman Organic Chemistry (CHEM 125) Despite cautions from their conservative elders, young chemists like Paternó and van't Hoff began interpreting molecular graphs in terms of the arrangement of a molecule's atoms in 3-dimensional space. Benzene was one such case, but still more significant was the prediction, based on puzzling isomerism involving "optical activity," that molecules could be "chiral," that is, right- or left-handed. Louis Pasteur effected the first artificial separation of racemic acid into tartaric acid and its mirror-image. • Crystal Meth Lab Crackdown - News Report Clip thanks to A member of the family of phenethylamines, methamphetamine is chiral, with two isomers, levorotary and dextrorotatory. The levorotary form, called levomethamphetamine, is an over-the-counter drug used in inhalers for nasal decongestion. Levomethamphetamine does not possess any significant central nervous system activity or addictive properties. This article deals only with the dextrorotatory form, called dextromethamphetamine, and the racemic form. Methamphetamine is a potent central nervous system stimulant that affects neurochemical mechanisms responsible for regulating heart rate, body temperature, blood pressure, appetite, attention, mood and emotional responses associated with alertness or alarming conditions. The acute physical effects of the drug closely resemble the physiological and psychological effects of an epinephrine-provoked fight-or-flight response, including increased heart rate and blood pressure, vasoconstriction (constriction of the arterial walls), bronchodilation, and hyperglycemia (increased blood sugar). Users experience an increase in focus, increased mental alertness, and the elimination of fatigue, as well as a decrease in appetite.
  • Narcolepsy in the News Courtesy of Narcolepsy is a chronic sleep disorder, or dyssomnia, characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in which a person experiences extreme fatigue and possibly falls asleep at inappropriate times, such as while at work, school, or when talking to your partner. Narcoleptics usually experience disturbed nocturnal sleep and an abnormal daytime sleep pattern, which is often confused with insomnia. When a narcoleptic falls asleep they generally experience the REM stage of sleep within 10 minutes; whereas most people do not experience REM sleep until after 90 minutes. There is no evidence to suggest that narcoleptics tend to have a shorter life span. Another problem that some narcoleptics experience is cataplexy, a sudden muscular weakness brought on by strong emotions (though many people experience cataplexy without having an emotional trigger). It often manifests as muscular weaknesses ranging from a barely perceptible slackening of the facial muscles to the dropping of the jaw or head, weakness at the knees, or a total collapse. Usually only speech is slurred, vision is impaired (double vision, inability to focus), but hearing and awareness remain normal. In some rare cases, an individual's body becomes paralyzed and muscles become stiff. Narcolepsy is a neurological sleep disorder. It is not caused by mental illness or psychological problems. It is most likely affected by a number of genetic abnormalities that affect specific biologic ...

  • 28. Stereochemical Nomenclature; Racemization and Resolution Freshman Organic Chemistry (CHEM 125) Determination of the actual atomic arrangement in tartaric acid in 1949 motivated a change in stereochemical nomenclature from Fischer's 1891 genealogical convention (D, L) to the CIP scheme (R, S) based on conventional group priorities. Configurational isomers can be interconverted by racemization and epimerization. Pure enantiomers can be separated from racemic mixtures by resolution schemes based on selective crystallization of conglomerates or temporary formation of diastereomers.
