  • Why 'Reflexive' Consciousness? In 'The Phenomenological Mind' by Dan Zahavi and Shaun Gallagher they make reference to the term 'reflexive consciousness', pointing out that this is a problematic term because it is used in very different ways. Some writers use it to indicate what elsewhere is called 'reflective' consciousness; the sense that one is capable of observing one's own thoughts and perceptions in an objective, self-aware way. Others use the word 'reflexive' to mean exactly the opposite, that reflexivity indicates an automatic and pre-reflective engagement, in the manner of a physical reflex such as the leg jerking when the knee is tapped. This second understanding of reflexivity requires no 'outside observer' to occupy a position from which the behaviour of the self can become visually aware, but rather is suggestive of an up-close and personal, tactile, felt relationship or connection.
  • The Alphabet's Big Bang Marshall McLuhan ("the medium is the message") called the Alphabet 'the mother of all invention' and there is no question about it; the Alphabet is the most powerful invention in the history of history. While there is some uncertainty about exactly when and where and for what purposes the Alphabet was invented, there is no question that the 'big bang' of its cultural/technological influence begins in roughly the same place and time as whatever actual history underlies the Moses story. It's always been amazing to me that non-religious historical linguists trace the Alphabet back to the same group of people the Bible describes Moses as living with while in the Sinai... The other remarkable aspect here is that the Alphabet, the technology of recording speech, also enables a big bang of sorts in our verbal self-reflexivity. It enables us to stop speech in front of our minds and become meta-reflective in new ways. "I AM", the other Moses connection, is the most concise description possible of 'verbal self-reflexivity'. For more on the incredible story of the Alphabet and it's profound influence on history or to access an embeddable version of this video, visit:
