  • Florida Trail: Magnolia Creek Hike on Nokuse, Part 2 Anyone can hike the Florida Trail. The Nokuse Section is somewhat difficult to complete since it is about 18 miles between the west end at Hwy 331 and the east end at Hwy 81. The Hollington trailhead in the center divides the section into two 9-mile one-way hikes, either east or west. Two campsites, about half-way into either leg of the trail, shorten the daily distance if you can backpack for two, three, or four days. However the conference offered two shorter day hikes of four miles each, using trucks on Nokuse back roads to bring and retrieve hikers from starting and ending points, using old work accesses not usually available to the public. This hike was part of the North Florida Regional Fall Conference of the Florida Trail Association, Choctawhatchee and Western Gate Chapters. It was on the Florida National Scenic Trail starting at the junction of the trail with Owl's Head road at 9:30 AM, October 24, 2009. It continued south. For this hike, the Section leaders had a key to the gate at the Bill Brown Wells towers road of the water management district. Cars and trucks fit for back country unpaved roads drove to the hike start on Owl's Head road. At hike's end, close to the confluence of Magnolia Creek and Lafayette Creek, trucks returned us to the hike start and the water management gate. • Earth's Largest Newark Earthworks World's Astronomical Alignment Mysterious This Hopewell pictograph, the Newark Earthworks, is the largest earthworks complex in the world. Although places such as the Nazca lines of Peru are better known, the earthworks in the Eastern United states were much more difficult to build because the tress and vegetation had to be removed and the earth flattened. The Hopewell Indians built these pictographs about 2000 years ago. Like the Nazca lines these earthworks stretch across the land like a giant map or drawing left by ancient astronauts; however, because the area was reforested, they were difficult to initially find. The Newark Earthworks is a National Historic Landmark. Chris Scarre of the McDonald Institute of Archaeological Research and editor of the Cambridge Archaeological Journal lists the site in "Seventy Wonders of the Ancient World". It has also been called one of the 70 wonders of the ancient world, by an international team of scholars. The Octagon Earthworks include an eight-sided structure enclosing about 20 ha. It is connected to a large circular enclosure by a short group of parallel walls. The research by Hively and Horn indicate that the Hopewell builders incorporated several lunar alignments into its architecture, track an18.6 years cycle. These alignments are not explained by statistical anomalies. (Hively, Ray and Robert Horn, 2006, "A Statistical Study of Lunar Alignments a the Newark Earthworks," Mid-continent Journal of Archaeology, Vol. 31, No. 2, PP 281-322.) • NAR (Net area to be reforested) plot SLB plots (trees and CWD) for the British Columbia Forest and Range Evaluation Program (FREP) are established both within retention patches and in the harvested area of recent cutblocks. SLBD plots within the harvested, or NAR area of a plot is, as in the retention patches, a survey of standing trees and CWD. Three plots are generally established within the harvested area of a cutblock, and at each plot there is a survey of standing trees and CWD, using the same methodology as within the patches. The plot type for tree measurement (prism sweep, fixed area or full count) will differ from the retention patches, dependent on the density of trees retained on the harvested area of the cutblock. Always count any trees, stubs or high stumpe, greater than 12.5 cm diameter breast height (dbh), found within the established plot. The trees found in the harvested area can contribute significantly to the biodiversity effectiveness, and overall amount of biodiversity for a block. The amount and quality of CWD found on the harvested area is compared against that found within retention patches. If there is standing retention in the harvested area also assess for constraints and ecological attributes. British Columbians desire sustainable use of the forests they hold in trust for future generations. Sustainable use can be defined in many ways. For the purpose of the Forest and Range Evaluation Program (FREP), sustainable use means: managing forests to meet present needs without ...

The reforestation project organized by the Society for the Protection and the Regeneration of the Penteli Mountain and planted 40.000 new trees to a burned area. "Cosmote" is the sponsor to water to the new trees for the next two years and "SKAI" was the mediasponsor. Penteli is a mountain near Athens. • Environment - Its Raining Trees! - George Pantazis By engineering specially designed canisters which would house a plant seed, would allow us to reforest large areas relatively easily. The canisters would be robust enough to protect the seed and bury into the ground but would house a casing (other than the base) that would shatter on impact. Dropping these canisters by plane or helicopter, a large area can be reforested when compared to the arduous task of manual reforestation.

  • Mauritius Rodrigues Island turtles There are on this island such a multitude of those tortoises in groups of two or three thousand that you can make more than one hundred strides [] on their shells without your feet treading the ground. Francois Leguat (1693): Over the next century (1732-1771) the French East India Company, which had control over Rodrigues, removed not less than 280000 tortoises. The last record of a wild Rodrigues Island tortoise was noted by Philibert Maragon in 1794, and the last captive specimen died in Mauritius in 1829. Such was the rapid decline to extinction of two sympatric, endemic species of Indian Ocean tortoises: Cylindraspis vosmeari and Cylindrapis peltastes. In response to this sad story of loss to both science and humanity, Owen Griffiths, a trained zoologist and committed environmentalist, has initiated an ambitious project aiming at giving back to Rodrigues its past natural heritage the reintroduction of giant tortoises into a reforested nature reserve on the island. In February 2005, the new autonomous local government of Rodrigues approved the lease of initial18 hectares for the establishment of the Francois Leguat Tortoise Reserve on the limestone plains of the Islands southwest. Subsequently, 80000 endemic and native Rodrigues plants (representing 34 species) have been re-established on the site, and 35000 more will be planted in 2007, under the supervision of the Rodrigues branch of the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation. The objective is to reestablish the original ...

  • The Coming Climate Crisis At this point in time, eliminating fossil fuels entirely is not likely to stave off disaster for populations affected by sealevel rise and loss of water supplies. The physics of ice ensures that glaciers will continue to melt for some time to come. In the meantime, we can rescue affected populations by providing new living space on formerly arid and desert lands. These lands can be reconstituted (revegetated, reforested) for human use with freshwater produced by desalination of seawater, fueled by wind and solar energy. As a side benefit, carbon will be sequestered in the new forests and grassy fields.
  • QRP on the Summit SOTA ...FIRE (unedited video clip) Slideshow: The day started out by knocking the ice off the goat's water after crawling out of my toasty sleeping bag. Soon were on the yellow brick road to the summit dazzled by the aspen's amazing display of fall colors. The last 1000ft push up to summit was a 2-hour long bushwhack (literally) up a 45 degree slope of dead fall mixed with car size boulders tough going even for goats! This previously burned summit had reforested itself with raspberry shrubs and big plies of fresh red bear scat everywhere! Goats and I were on high alert the whole time. I was just about ready to fire up the ATS3b and launch a signal when a spotted a plume of white smoke in the valley below us. "Holly goatberries it's a fire!" Says, Rooster. We had cell service so I called 911. They said they had crews in route. I felt relived as my truck was parked between summit and fire and the wind was blowing the fire towards us! Not good! Says, Peanut! With an eagle's eye on the fire I proceeded to make a few contacts until my previously Rooster-smashed switches ceased to function which left us locked on 14060KHz ...with no RIT and my keyer paddles kept jamming. Plus my MP3 audio recorder which I use as a logger was flashing 'dead battery'! Top that off with the fire had now blown up and I could now see flames leaping skyward! "That's it boys were outa here!" I literally torn down the antenna, threw things in my pack and turned for lower elevations. We thrashed through the ...
  • Marc Collins Colinares Speaks: HDI Rally Support to Ban Climbing Activities at Mount Apo A few weeks back, the Human Development International alarmed on the severity of the drought that continues to ravage the country has recommended to DENR XI and Mt. Apo Protected Area Management Board for the immediate closure of Mt. Apo from climbing activities as to prevent forest fire and give the mountain space as it continues to suffer the extreme heat. Further, the recommendation stressed that the ban be lifted only after the drought is over and life in the mountain has come to its normal state. We at HDI are grateful for the prompt and positive response of DENR XI under Director Jim Sampulna for supporting HDIs recommendation to ban climbing activities at Mt. Apo during the prevailing drought. Likewise for putting HDI and DENR concern a top and urgent agenda in the upcoming Mt. Apo Natural Park Management Meeting on Marc 25, 2010 at Kidapawan City so a definite and prompt preventive action is put in placed. Marc: Much so that time is an essence for any moment fire can start at Mount Apo and caught everyone unprepared. Taking heed of the forest fire that hit Luzon that devastated large area of forest cover plus the high incidence of fires in population centers and reported bush fires as land surface continues to dry up due to the extreme heat a warning that must not be taken for granted for theres too much to loose if fire breaks out. The fact that forest fires that hit Mount Apo in the 80s and 90s happened on a long drought period that have scorched vast track of ...

Entry from: Newport, United States Entry Title: "Oregon, that's where oregano comes from isn't it?" Entry: "What a day. I've never seen so many trees in my life, and so many tree farms, lumbering sites, and log trucks. I really feel ambivalent about the logging industry. On the one hand, they are cutting down majestic trees, and on the other hand, they are reforesting, supplying our lumber, and a lot of jobs. They seem to coexist nicely here. I find there are 3 kinds of trees here. The "second growth" are reforested after a cutting, and when harvested, are the size of telephone poles. The "old growth trees are much older, and their trunks are about 3 to 4 feet in diameter, and the trees may be 80 to 100 feet tall. The old growth trees are actually the second cutting. In the 1800's the original virgin forests were cut down. There are still some stumps showing from these trees and they are 6 to 8 feet in diameter. It is hard to imagine the beauty and majesty of those forests. There were a few of those trees on the end of Stanley Island in Vancouver. We drove along the Oregon coast today, and the scenery is beautiful. There are high cliffs above the sea, and then the grade drops down to beach level for a while. Everywhere there is a stretch of beach, there is a little resort town. Everywhere there ...

Read the full blog here: This blog preview was made by TravelPod using the TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow creator. Entry from: Panama City, Panama Entry Title: "Day 1: Panama Overview" Entry: "On a budget, getting to Panama City from Flagstaff, Arizona takes some time. I left my home in Parks at 2:00am and our two vans pulled away from the campus parking lot at 2:45am. This was an unusually early morning for Alex and me and a moderately late night for most of our (younger) traveling companions. We arrived at our hotel across the street from the University of Panama some 20 hours later. Our first full day in Panama started at 8am with a trip to the Smithsonian Institute's main research campus, where we met scientists who are studying the extremely complex forests of Panama. Their focus, and the purpose of our trip, is to learn how to best conserve and protect these ecosystems in the face of rampant development, population growth, climate change, introduced species, and all the other challenges that face a developing country. Here is a summary of their introduction to Panama forestry issues. More than 30% of the natural forest area of Panama has been lost in the past 40 years, and more than half of that loss has been during the past 10 years. Fortunately, reforestation efforts have ramped up so much in recent years that more forest is now being created than lost. This is very good news and cause for celebration ...

Here in Costa Rica encounters with these animals are increasingly common in reforested areas due to the limitations previously imposed on them from pasture land. We have nothing to fear but fear itself though as we find that these intelligent creatures much like us just want to get along.

  • Atlantis! - Shane Koyczan The song Atlantis! by the slam poet Shane Koyczan off of his album A Pretty Decent Cape In My Closet Lyrics: Your entire body shakes when you laugh As if your sense of humor was built on a fault line And the coast of your heart falls into the ocean of your self and I'm left looking for this Atlantis Left looking for this place that exists in stories told by old men who were there when mathematics assured them Their willingness to believe was greater than their determination to dismiss I'm left looking for Atlantis Regardless of the scientists that insist my efforts would be better spent unearthing clues to where the wild things went Try as it might Faith can't put a dent in fact So we must settle for watching science reenact the world As if the universe was curled around this globe And is we consider that the universe is never-ending then we're not even a microbe We're like a death threat from a pacifist, we're nothing But the Hizenburg Uncertainty Principal states that: "Nothing is fo' shizzle" And the interesting thing about that is it insures the principle itself can't even be a fact But we still act as if this time we can see the forest through the trees Regardless of the softwood lumber levy we fall in line like reforested pine It's all straight rows where everything grows a little less wild and a little more hum-drum-ho-hum We come from a mentality that rarely sees the horror in symmetry Or the beauty in non-conformity We insist that for us, everything must be clear ...

Read the full blog here: This blog preview was made by TravelPod using the TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow creator. Entry from: Rio do Sul, Brazil Entry Title: "Atlantic forest in Santa Catarina" Entry: "I´m finally in a very remote place. Most of the people work with agricultural products. Here I will stay until Friday 18.12. Then I have to decide wheter I go to Iguaçu falls or I take the last rest of my vacation in Florianopolis. I am here to colaborate with a reforestation project (), there is a big big green house and they provide native trees to projects of reforestation. One of the funding NGOs is the Bund HEidelberg ( Part of this atlantic forest was in 93% destroyed. This area was mainly colonized by germans and nowadays they still speak german in their hauses although the german language is not supported by Brazilian Gov. In contrast to the official language, the portuguese. Different generations of germans are leaving here, some of them speak an old german mixed with portuguese and different old dialects. This looks like a little Bavavaria in Brazil. Different projects are taken by Apremavi, I´ve visited some areas which have already reforested." Read and see more at: Photos from this trip: 1. • South Tarryall Peak, Fire and Goats on the Air - SOTA Slideshow: The day started out by knocking the ice off the goat's water after crawling out of my toasty sleeping bag. We thrashed through the deadfall ...
