  • Ginger Rhizome (Root) Zingiber officinale DIY In Outdoor Containers The Ginger www.b2 roots actually grow off of the rhizome located under the ground of the Zingiber officinale. I have asked many active gardeners to identify the green bamboo looking shoots coming from the Ginger rhizome and so far I have had to help each of them out. Ginger, grown in the most quantity internationally by Indians (420000 tons in 2008), is fairly easily grown in Zone 7 (at least) - 10 as food source year round. We picked up our ginger rhizomes from a local market and planted them a couple inches deep in a large 30 gallon container a friend helped us out with but only one out of at least 5 grew up from the ground. There may have been something added to the ginger to keep it from sprouting in the market but one is still working well. If you decide to grow ginger I suggest going to a local nursery where you can buy a large amount of growing ginger with stalks for around $6-$10 so it will continue to grow quickly and you do not waste months like I have with frequent watering and care. Once ginger is going it seems to grow much more quickly so only start with fresh dormant rhizomes if you need to. Ginger In Winter I believe you could plant ginger in the winter and expect it to grow well in the spring as long as you water it frequently and provide enough well drained composted soil. It may take a few more months before I am able to harvest this ginger which has been growing for at least 5 months.

  • Local Hop Heads- Moldy Hops Rhizomes Sometimes your hops rhizomes will start to develop a little mold while storing in your fridge before you can plant them in the spring. Don't fret! Here's what you do: 1. Make a weak bleach solution (a quarter cup of bleach in a gallon of water works fine). 2. Dip the rhizome into the bleach water, hold them there for a few seconds, then remove them. 3. Rinse them by dipping them into a bowl of warm water, then let them drip dry. 4. You want them a little damp, NOT WET, when putting them back into the bag or storage container as you put them back into your fridge. (Wet rhizomes will rot.) If you have any suggestions, comments, or insights that will help me out (as well as our fellow Hop Heads) please leave them here in the comments section! My name is John McLellan. I live in Helena, Montana, and you can reach me at: [email protected] CHEERS!

  • 1 minute meditation on ambient lotus flower from: The distinctive dried seed heads, which resemble the spouts of watering cansphoto, are widely sold throughout the world for decorative purposes and for dried flower arranging. The flowers, seeds, young leaves, and "roots" (rhizomes) are all edible. In Asia, the petals are used sometimes for garnish, while the large leaves are used as a wrap for food, not frequently eaten (for example, as a wrapper for zongzi). In Korea, the leaves and petals are used as a tisane. Yeonkkotcha (연꽃차) is made with dried petals of white lotus and yeonipcha (연잎차) is made with the leaves. The rhizome (called ǒu (藕) in pinyin Chinese, ngau in Cantonese, bhe in Hindi, renkon (レンコン, 蓮根 in Japanese), yeongeun (연근) in Korean) is used as a vegetable in soups, deep-fried, stir-fried, and braised dishes and the roots are also used in traditional Asian herbal medicine. Petals, leaves, and rhizome can also all be eaten raw, but there is a risk of parasite transmission (eg, Fasciolopsis buski): it is therefore recommended that they be cooked before eating. Lotus rootlets are often pickled with rice vinegar, sugar, chili and/or garlic. It has a crunchy texture with sweet-tangy flavours. In Asian cuisine, it is popular with salad, prawns, sesame oil and/or coriander leaves. Lotus roots have been found to be rich in dietary fiber, vitamin C, potassium, thiamin, riboflavin, vitamin B6, phosphorus, copper, and manganese, while very low in saturated fat.[citation needed] The ...

  • Edible wild plants: Cattail - Typha (Wilderness Survival skills and courses) Cattail or Typha plants grow along lake margins and in marshes, Cattails have a wide variety of parts that are edible to humans. The rhizomes are a pleasant, nutritious and energy-rich food source, generally harvested from late Autumn to early Spring. These are starchy, but also fibrous, so the starch must be scraped or sucked from the tough fibers. In addition to the rhizomes, cattails have little-known, underground, lateral stems that are quite tasty. In late spring, the bases of the leaves, while they are young and tender, can be eaten raw or cooked. As the flower spike is developing in early summer, it can be broken off and eaten like corn on the cob. In mid-summer, once the male flowers are mature, the pollen can be collected and used as a flour supplement or thickener. Cattails have also recently been suggested as a source of oil. The boiled rootstocks have been used for increasing urination, or used mashing, to make a jelly-like paste for sores, boils, wounds, burns, scabs, inflammations, and smallpox pustules.

  • Ginger Lily - Dave Bradshaw Ahh wow the fragrance of the ginger lily.. its too bad you cant smell it there. Ill just linger here while I inhale deeply. The ginger lily is a perennial and its just beginning to bloom you see this one right here has just started. This is going to be blooming from now right on into late, late fall, but early in the morning and late in the afternoon when the dew is around the air is just redolent with that gardenia fragrance. Now these are marginally tender and I say that because they spread by rhizomes if we look down at the bottom youll see how theyre spreading by rhizomes and over the past 3 winters Id say weve really not had a harsh winter with freezes sufficient to kill some of these rhizomes but if we had a really harsh winter many of these would be killed but thered be some of those that are down under the mulch thatd be protected and youd still have a plenty to share with your neighbors. This is one thing I really think we ought to grow more of and as a cut flower theyre wonderful you could take one stem and put in a heavy bud vase and your whole house would be fragranced. I think they might come in to use in weddings scattered about the church so the entire place would have this wonderful fragrance.

  • Riley Project: Conversation 2010 The Riley Project is a 20 year collaboration between Steven Schick and Ross Karre. The goal is to creat an audio visual document that spans a twenty year interpretation of Tery Riley's In C. Each year, for one day, Schick and Karre will participate in a audio-visual recording session. The goal of each session will be to capture portions of In C for post-production assembly into an interpretation of In C. The documentation will not only explore the piece and its changing manifestations over 20 years, it will also reveal intricacies of age, media, and the theory and practice of percussion and music. An extra feature of this documentation will be a yearly conversation between Schick and Karre on a variety of relevant topics. This video, from Dec. 14th, 2009, is a series of excerpts from the first of 20 conversations. Each year, the videos will be added to the Roots and Rhizomes blog, an extension of the Roots and Rhizomes percussion conference discussions which took place in 2007 and 2009. R&R will continue in 2011 at the Banff Centre in Alberta, CAN.
