  • Macrolides - Mechanism of action and Resistance MACROLIDES - Mechanism of action and Resistance ======================================== Antibiotic macrolides are used to treat infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria (eg Streptococcus pneumoniae) and Haemophilus influenzae infections such as respiratory tract and soft-tissue infections. The antimicrobial spectrum of macrolides is slightly wider than that of penicillin, and, therefore, macrolides are a common substitute for patients with a penicillin allergy. Beta-hemolytic streptococci, pneumococci, staphylococci, and enterococci are usually susceptible to macrolides. Unlike penicillin, macrolides have been shown to be effective against Legionella pneumophila, mycoplasma, mycobacteria, some rickettsia, and chlamydia. Macrolides are not to be used on non-ruminant herbivores, such as horses and rabbits. They rapidly produce a reaction causing fatal digestive disturbance. It can be used in horses less than one year old, but care must be taken that other horses (such as a foal's mother) do not come in contact with the macrolide treatment. Mechanism of action ------------------------------ Antibacterial Macrolides are protein synthesis inhibitors. The mechanism of action of macrolides is inhibition of bacterial protein biosynthesis, and they are thought to do this by preventing peptidyltransferase from adding the peptidyl attached to tRNA to the next amino acid(similarly to chloramphenicol)[citation needed] as well as inhibiting ribosomal translocation.Another potential ...

  • Sycamore Creek UGR Auberry, Ca This is the N Eastern boundary of my property in Auberry. No rain. Therefore, no water for the creek. I dropped this camera Shaver Lake kayaking last summer while trying to photograph a bald eagle in Stevensens Cove. Auto-stabilizer is shot but the cam itself still kinda works OK though. Video footage of the North-North East boundry. There's a waterfall (2:11) that is usually quite beautiful this time of year but we haven't gotten any snow or rain this past season and therefore no water to fall. Maintaining this is what I do in my spare time. It is far too much for one man. I'm exhausted. The Eastern boundary is completely out of control. There is now a fallen tree, in the creek, that is blocking the road to the NE corner. Arrgh! I want to keep this and fully develope it for the younglings in the family to experience, but my god. List of Hazards include the following: Black bears Cougars Wild canines Rattle snakes Dear ticks (Ixoides sp.) you know, vector for Borrelia burgdorferi (Lymes Disease) and Rickettsia rickettsii (rocky mountain spotted fever) just to name a few Raccoons Humans

  • Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF) is a tick-borne disease by a bacterium called Rickettsia rickettsii. Even though RMSF sounds like it is only in the Rocky Mountains (where it was first described), it occurs throughout all the Americas. It is most prevalent in the Southeastern and South Central states. North Carolina has a larger percentage of cases, though there aren't that many cases overall. In 2004, 1454 cases of RMSF were reported to the CDC. I'm writing about this because a viewer/reader in Charlottesville, VA asked me to talk about it because her husband was severely affected by RMSF this year (2007). Rural and suburban regions have the most cases of RMSF though some cases from parks in NYC have been reported! Spring and early summer is when RMSF appears the most, as most tick-borne illnesses are. Outdoors people are obviously most at risk – so, white men. Most cases are in people aged 40-64. Dog can carry the infected ticks and pass them on to their owners. The common brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus – wow say that 3 times fast, or at all) may be a vector (carrier) for RMSF. Possibly infection can occur without a tick bite, in which contamination might be due to contact or inhalation with tick poop or tick tissue. Clinical: Incubation period is 2-14 days, but most occur a week after infection. Flu like symptoms occur first – in particular a fever, as in the name for RMSF. So there are headache, body aches, nausea. Belly pains occur usually in children ...
