Yellowstone has become the subject of many a fear-mongering video, and I hope this clears some things up. The source of the Yellowstone hotspot is not fully known, all that is known is that there is a very large magma chamber underneath Yellowstone that has had many major eruptions and even more minor eruptions since the beginning of this planet. This volcano is a result of what is known as a hotspot, meaning it is the result of magma rising at the (more or less) center of a tectonic plate. This is opposed to the volcanoes on the edge of the Ring of Fire on the Pacific, which are fueled by newly subducted land being melted into lava chambers, or from simple splitting of the crust. That having been said, no, these volcanoes are NOT interconnected. The eruption of any one volcano does not relieve stress on any other volcano.   • Construction of Circum-Antarctic Paleobathymetry [1080p] SUMMARY A software package has been developed to model the paleobathymetry of the circum-Antarctic oceans back to the Late Cretaceous. The package is based on a revised tectonic model of the circum-Antarctic region and incorporates a number of features such as spatially variable subsidence rates, refined rotation poles and a detailed treatment of selected areas. The output consists of color-coded maps at user-specified Cenozoic ages and the associated gridded paleobathymetry for all oceans lying south of 30°S. METHODOLOGY We approximate the composite effects of sedimentation through loading and burial while assuming a constant sedimentation rate at each grid point. Our model differs from that of Brown, et al., 2006, in that we do not assume uniform cooling-induced subsidence throughout the entire region being modelled. TECHNIQUE There are numerous steps involved in reconstructing paleobathymetry for any specified time. First, plates are rotated back to their position at the target time and oceanic crust younger than the target age is removed. Next, the residual present-day bathymetry must be adjusted to account for the effects of crustal subsidence, sedimentation and eustatic sea level changes. In some places, crust that existed at the target age has since been subducted and must be resurrected.   • The Earth's lowest mantle - Krystle Catalli View more information on the DOE NNSA SSGF Program at The thicknesses and Clapeyron slopes of mineral phase boundaries strongly influence the seismic detectability of the boundaries, as well as convection in the Earth's mantle. In recent years, Mg-silicate perovskite, the dominant mineral in the lower mantle, was found to undergo a structural transition to the post-perovskite phase near 125 gigapascals, a pressure consistent with the D'' seismic discontinuity. Composition is expected to affect the pressure at which the transition occurs and whether it is a sharp or broad transition. We have investigated the effects of iron and aluminum as well as coexisting minerals on the perovskite to post-perovskite transition using in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction in the laser-heated diamond-anvil cell. Composition is found to strongly affect both the depth and thickness of the transition, suggesting that the D'' discontinuity may only occur in regions of the Earth's lowermost mantle, where subducted oceanic lithosphere is present.

This is how Earth very likely looked in the geological past (don't forget - uncertainties increase back in time for ANY investigation).   • Granite! The Versatile Igneous Rock The minerals that are found in granite are primarily quartz, plagioclase feldspars, potassium or K-feldspars, hornblende and micas. Quartz is usually the last mineral to crystallize and fills in the extra space between the other minerals. Quartz's hardness, lack of chemical reactivity and near lack of cleavage give granite a significant amount of its desirable durable properties. The quartz will appear gray, but is actually colorless and is reflecting and fusing the colors of the white and black minerals surrounding it. The plagioclase feldspars are generally white with a porcelaneous luster. The K-feldspars are generally the ones that give granite its color variations from yellow to orange to pink or blue. Dark K-feldspars can give granite its black varieties as well. The micas are generally muscovite (silver), biotite (black or brown) or lepidolite (violet or pink) and provide the sparkle that some granites possess. The hornblende and biotite provide granite with the black pepper portion of the famous and distinctive "salt and pepper" look to classic granite.   • Indian Ocean Tsunami Model, December 26, 2004 This dataset is a model put together by the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory that simulates the waves of the December 26, 2004 tsunami the first thirty-six hours after it occurred. A tsunami is a series of waves generated when a body of water, such as an ocean, is rapidly displaced on a massive scale. Historically tsunamis have been referred to as tidal waves, but that name is discouraged by oceanographers because tides have little effect on tsunamis. The color ranges from light blue for troughs 50cm below sea level and yellow for ridges 50cm above sea level. The infamous Sumatra Tsunami on December 26, 2004 was the result of a massive earthquake that occurred when the India tectonic plate subducted beneath the Burma plate, causing an earthquake with a magnitude of at least 9.0 on the Richter scale which displaced a huge amount of water. Out in the depths of the ocean, the wave heights do not increase dramatically. But as the waves travel inland, the depth of the ocean gets shallower causing the waves to build up. Waves with heights of 35.5 feet were reported during the Sumatra Tsunami. The speed of the waves depends on the ocean depth rather than the distance from the source of the wave. The waves travel faster over deep waters and slower over shallow waters as they build up. This allowed the Sumatra Tsunami to propagate worldwide in just one day. This mountain range is not yet fully emerged above sea level, and Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlotte Islands are just the higher elevations of the range, which was in fact fully exposed during the last ice age when the continental shelf in this area was a broad coastal plain. The mountain range formed when a chain of active volcanic islands called the Insular Islands, collided against North America during the Mid-Cretaceous time. The type of rocks that form the Insular Mountains are turbidites and pillow lavas. Granitic plutons are relatively uncommon in the Insular Mountains, unlike the Coast Mountains. The mountain range has an area of 133879 sq km and much seismic activity, with the Pacific Plate and the Juan de Fuca Plate being subducted into the earth's mantle. Large earthquakes have led to collapsing mountains, landslides, and the development of fissures.

They considered it vulnerable to a so-called quake "cascade" that began with the notorious 9.1 quake of December 26, 2004 that unleashed the Indian Ocean tsunami. "Cascade" events can occur in long, badly-stressed faults. The stress of a large earthquake causes the next section of a fault to weaken and then rupture, in a domino-like effect.
