  • Series of Sungrazer Comets with SOHO - March 2010 On March 12th, 2010 reported that the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) watched as a comet plunged into the sun and disappeared. Upon closer inspection of the SOHO images I found that it was part of a series of at least four comet fragments following the same trajectory. The highlights in this video are my own addition to make the comets more visible. In the first view from the SOHO Lasco C3 camera (wider angle) a much smaller, previously unseen comet precedes the brighter comet. Then, as reported, the bright main comet is seen plunging towards the sun. Shortly following it is a faint pair of comets headed on the same path, which, at the time of publishing this video, have yet to reach the sun. In the second view from the SOHO Lasco C2 camera (close-up angle) the first faint comet is briefly seen before being disintegrated by the sun's gravity, followed shortly by the much brighter second comet. The third and fourth pair of comets have yet to enter the field of view of the Lasco C2 camera.   • SOHO-6 Comet at 2-6 solar radii from the Sun This movie was assembled from images taken by an instrument aboard the NASA-European Space Agency Solar Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) and provides a remarkable galactic perspective on the Sun and its place in the Milky Way. North is at the top of the scene, which corresponds with the orientation of the Sun as seen at midday in the northern hemisphere of Earth. Taken during December 22-27, 1996, the series of images show the Sun drifting in front of the stars of the constellation Sagittarius, as the constant solar wind blows outward in all directions. At the time of the observations, SOHO is looking towards the heart of the Milky Way Galaxy. The Milky Way, made by the light of billions of distant stars, forms a luminous band slanting down and to the right. Dark lanes seen in the Milky Way are real features familiar to astronomers. They are created by dust clouds in the disk of the galaxy that obscure the distant stars. A doomed comet, previously unknown, enters on the left of the image on December 22. Its path curves towards the Sun and on December 23 it disappears behind the occulting mask of the coronagraph. It fails to reappear on the far side of the Sun. Whether or not its trajectory took it directly towards the visible surface, the comet must have evaporated in Sun's atmosphere.   • Good-bye Streaking Comet (October 3, 2011) and How Solar Flares are Classed NASA filmed a video of a comet crashing into the sun on Oct. 3rd, and the flare that blows out from the other side suggests the comet did have an effect on the sun A bright comet headed right towards the Sun and disintegrated (Oct.3, 2011). It was a sungrazing comet of the type known as a Kreutz sungrazer and a particularly bright one at that. There is not a definitive orbit calculated for it yet, but most sungrazing comets have orbits that take them very close to the Sun without actually quite hitting it. However, getting so close almost always destroys these comets, so we see them going in, but not going back out. The bright object above and to the left of the Sun in the LASCO C3 (blue) still and video clip is the planet Mercury. The question of whether a sungrazing comet can somehow trigger a coronal mass ejection is an intriguing one. So far, the feeling is that apparent relationship between some comets and some mass ejections is simply one of co-incidence. At this stage of the solar cycle, the Sun is producing many mass ejections--in fact there were several earlier in the day--and it probably just happened by chance that one of them was around the same time as the approach of the comet. While small sungrazers can be completely evaporated during such a close approach to the Sun, larger sungrazers can survive many perihelion passages. However, the strong evaporation and tidal forces they experience often lead to their fragmentation. An extremely bright comet seen by Aristotle and Ephorus in 371 BC is a possible candidate for this parent comet.

NASA's STEREO-A and -B spacecraft also recorded the event, and they are beaming their data back to Earth now. In a few days we'll have high-res movies of a comet's death plunge from three points of view: SOHO, STEREO-A and STEREO-B.

  • AV 2009-12-30 Sungrazer Astrotometry - Cyclone Forecast Astrotometry Log - December 30th 2009 o Astrotometry of recent sungrazing comets and an associated CME indicates a moderately strong cyclonic storm will begin to form before January 5th. Multiple sungrazing comets were discovered in the SOHO C3 data from late December. This hyper-symmetric coronal mass ejection indicates the formation of a moderately strong cyclonic storm system on the Earth. A second sungrazer with the same trajectory indicates this cyclonic system may be re-energized after a second CME from the same active region. As expected in Astrotometry these Sungrazers were accompanied by hypertime interference patterns in the form of sunspot group 1039. This CME foreshadows a break in a two week long hiatus of cyclonic activity that is expected to break by January 5th.
  • Comet SWAN Heading for the Sun! - Ukrainian Amateur astronomer, citizen scientist, and SOHO Comet Hunter Vladimir Bezugly reported a bright blob on images taken by the SWAN instrument on SOHO. This turned out to be a type of sungrazing comet called a Kreutz Comet from the same family as the famous Sun surviving Comet Lovejoy. There have been 2200+ of these type of comets discovered, thanks largely to SOHO, so this would seem like no big deal. But it is because one of these has never been seen before with SWAN. SWAN is an "all-sky" imager meaning it has a 360-degree view. It cannot look at the Sun or the Earth so those are the blacked out parts in the SWAN image. SWAN is not a traditional imager It "sees" a type of ultraviolet light called Lyman-alpha. It was designed to measure this light coming from solar wind particles interacting with solar light. But we can also see this type of light coming from comets. Solar UV radiation splits up water molecules and the liberated hydrogen atoms glow in UV light. So observing the comet in SWAN means that there is a large amount of hydrogen (water) in the comet. Well, so what does this all mean? This is just ...

Although Comet Lovejoy (C/2011 W3) could become as bright as Jupiter or Venus when it "flames out," the glare of the sun will hide the event from human eyes. Solar observatories in space, however, will have a grand view. Yesterday the brightening comet entered the field of view of NASA's STEREO-B spacecraft: "You can clearly see the comet heading diagonally through the images," says Karl Battams of the Naval Research Lab who prepared the animation. "During the 16-hour sequence, the comet brightens from magnitude +7.5 to +6, approximately." It will soon grow much brighter. "This comet is a true sungrazer, and will skim approximately 140000 km (1.2 solar radii) above the solar surface on Dec. 15/16," notes Battams. At such close range, solar heating will almost certainly destroy the icy interloper,creating a cloud of vapor and comet dust that will reflect lots of sunlight. The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) will have a particularly good view. Discovered on Dec. 2nd by amateur astronomer Terry Lovejoy of Australia, the comet is an unusually large member of the Kreutz family.   • Kreutz Sungrazer Makes Solar Plunge: Nov 26th, 2012. Sungrazing comets have been observed for many hundreds of years. In the late 1880's and early 1890's, Heinrich Kreutz studied the possible sungrazing comets which had been observed until then and determined that some were sungrazers and some were not. He also found that those which were indeed sungrazers all followed the same orbit. That is, they were all fragments of a single comet which had broken up. It is probable that the original comet, and its fragments, have broken up repeatedly as they orbit the sun with a period of about 800 years.   • Icy Comet Dives Into The Sun - 02 October 2011 The solar system has one less comet this week after an icy unnamed comet plunged into the sun on Sunday, 02 October 2011. Astronomers believe the object was a fragment, one of many referred to as the the Kreutz family, of one large comet that broke up several centuries ago. Comets that travel near the sun are referred to as "sungrazers". NASA has discovered hundreds of such comets over the years but few are documented diving into the sun so clearly. NASA said "it was a sungrazing comet of the type known as a Kreutz sungrazer and a particularly bright one at that. There is not a definitive orbit calculated for it yet, but most sungrazing comets have orbits that take them very close to the Sun without actually quite hitting it. However, getting so close almost always destroys these comets, so we see them going in, but not going back out." The comet, composed of ice and dust, must have disintegrated as it got very close to the heat and pressure of the Sun.
