  • Prawn Trawler Boats Part 3 - Prep to Trawl & Shooting Away As the trawlers head out, the gear (nets) are thrown over in preparation before "shooting away". This Fishing Vessel is using "tri-gear", 3 nets that comb the sandy ocean floor in the hope of bagging a few hundred kilos (double that for lbs :P) of prawn! Those big grates you see getting thrown over are called Turtle Exclusion Devices. This is one way Commercial Fishermen limit bi-catch and avoid trapping turtles, rays and other sea-life in their nets.

  • How to Buy Sustainable Seafood | Bycatch and Trawling method of Fishing All fish are not created equal. For example the price difference of $3 a lb for Mahi Mahi is well justified if it is handline caught. The catch method can make a big difference in the over catch. If I have learned one thing over my career as a professional chef it is that you need to pay more. When you pay less you will end up paying more in the long run. This is so true for seafood. • Trawlers Blockading Cork Harbour/Port By Roches Point 10 June 2008 - Cork Harbour -Trawlers Blockading =)Fair Play to all that took part In this Protest!!! Blockaded Cork and Waterford Port But hopefully got your point across =)!! Fishermen blockading Cork and Waterford's ports have made a number of demands, which they say will end their protest. The fishermen want the Government to recognise that 60000 people in coastal areas depend on the fishing industry for their economic survival. They have called for State agencies, including the Sea Fisheries Protection Authority and the the Civil Service, to change their attitude towards coastal people and to respect them and the industry. We are people with families to feed, communities to support and are not criminals to be disposed of,' the fishermen say in a statement. 'Our industry, which has no history of civil disobedience, has been forced to take these protest measures and will continue to do so, for however longis necessary,' they add. The protests are being organised by ad hoc groups, outside of the formal Federation of Fishermen and said the protests would end if the Government met them to discuss the problems of the industry. The fishermen blockading the entrance to Cork port issued a warning by VHF marine radio that they will not allow any shipping in or out. About 60 fishing boats of various sizes formed a circle around the harbour mouth off Roches Point, which is the only entrance to the port. A number of fishing trawlers have also started blockading Waterford port ...
  • Selectivity in Beam Trawls Project SOBETRA: Species Optimisation of a Selective Beam Trawl. A 3 year EU beam trawling research project (AIR2-CT93-1015) for the period 1993-1996. The objective was to reduce the bycatch of roundfish species taken in beam trawls but without incurring losses of target flatfish species. Three countries took part in this work: Belgium, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands (who co-ordinated the project). It was found that bycatches could indeed be significantly reduced, but the effectiveness of this depended on the type and size of beam trawl being used in a particular fishery. Originally filmed in SVHS (1993). Digitally remastered 2011.

First comes an initial sorting to get out quickly the most fragile and the most accessible organisms. This first operation is followed by a sifting session, using water to sieve what remains. The purpose of this sieving is to separate organisms from the sediment in which they are stuck and also to classify them by size. Next, in the wet lab, the organisms in each size class are separated by the phylum to which they belong, and then they are conserved to be kept for repatriation at the Museum.

  • Trawling Aboard the R/V Georgia Bulldog (BETA) [This video is still undergoing edits.] On August 23-24, the University of Georgia Marine Extension Service deployed their research vessel, the 'Georgia Bulldog', to test a new turtle excluding device (TED) I went along for the ride and to help out. The idea is to help turtles out as well as reducing the incidental catch of juvenile fish. Ultimately, the catch is made cleaner. Data gathered from this trip, and many others, will be presented to the National Marine Fisheries Service. The experimental TED used here is called the 'Sinkey Boone'. Kathleen McCormick, also from the St. Augustine Lighthouse, went along. The two of us have been working on an exhibit on shrimping in the southeast and its intricate history. Enjoy!

  • Deep Trawl Underwater Camera The underwater sea floor seen here is very different from those we've seen heretofore. It is continuously covered with thriving living organisms. The fauna are dominated by branched "corals" about twenty cm tall, rather colorful and decorated with numerous lighter-colored brittlestars. Several species of white foliate (flattened in a leaf shape) sponges and other, yellower ones are scattered over the living tapestry. We can see corridors that are bare of organisms. These areas seem to have been scraped by rocks or ice, but the hypothesis of a passing iceberg at such a depth is discarded. Thus it could be a case of a landslide of big rocky chunks that would have tumbled down the continental talus. The rare vertebrates seen are Notothenioids and, for the first time in the mission, macrouroids, also known as grenadiers!

  • Bottom-trawling video This is a video showing a bottom-trawler (dragger) clear-cutting the ocean floor. The UK, the US, Australia and many other countries are asking the world to listen to scientists and support a temporary UN moratorium on bottom-trawling in international waters. A moratorium would give scientists time to find seamounts, deep-sea corals, and other fragile fish habitats before they are destroyed by bottom-trawling. Also, because it can take years to put fishing regulations in place, a moratorium is needed to protect these habitats before they are destroyed. Although many countries support a moratorium, Canada's Conservative government and Fisheries Minister Loyola Hearn ([email protected]) have said that Canada will not join the world in supporting a moratorium. Without Canada's support, a moratorium will likely be defeated at the UN in December 2006. You can see Canadians supporting a moratorium at and you can learn more about the issue at
