  • Debate: Tucson School's Book Ban After Suspension of Mexican American Studies Program 1 of 2 - Public school officials in Tucson, Arizona, have released a list of seven banned books that can no longer be used in classrooms following their suspension of the district's acclaimed Mexican American Studies program. Last year, Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction John Huppenthal ruled the program violated a new state law, saying it "promote[s] resentment toward a race or class of people." "If all you're teaching the students is one viewpoint, one dimension, we can readily that see it is not an accurate history, its not an education at all, its not teaching these kids to think critically," Hupenthal says. "Instead its an indoctrination." We host a debate between Huppenthal and Richard Martinez, the attorney representing teachers and students trying to save the Mexican American Studies program. "What has occurred here is [Huppenthal] has taken away from our entire community a curriculum that was adopted by our school board, that was developed by our school district, and that has successfully operated for well over 10 years," Martinez says. "It's just part of the same kind of tactics that have been employed in Arizona reflected by [SB] 1070 — the anti-immigrant perspective, it is the anti-Latino perspective that exists in this state." • Repeal the Main Gate Overlay (Tucson, Arizona) In this interview, resident John Patterson of Tucson's West University neighborhood talks about a grassroots initiative called Repeal the Main Gate Overlay. An out-of-state developer is determined to build an out-of-place development in the historic West University neighborhood and the residents were not properly consulted regarding their concerns, nor were any impact studies conducted. Residents might otherwise be cooperative in going ahead with the project. Until the end of March (2012), residents are gathering signatures for a petition that will seek to correct this process. To this end, we also discussed the importance of citizens having political power at the local level so as to be able to shape their own destinies. A related issue is that of the streetcar project being installed throughout downtown and the area around the University of Arizona. This is being done in the name of urban revitalization and likely has gained support from big names in the automotive industry only because they do not believe that it will actually be a success. Some people feel that the project money would be better spent on improving the existing bus system which extends out to the suburbs (while the streetcar is limited to downtown).

  • Tucson Conspiracies? Missing Girl Isabel Celis and 'Mysterious Explosion' (Police Scanner Audio) Tucson, YU SO SHADY, but have no SHADE? But seriously, I was combing through the police scanner audio archives from the night/morning of Isabel Celis' disappearance, as I figured nobody else had bothered to do so yet. As I stated, I did not initially hear anything in the audio files that sounded relevant to her or her disappearance at all - but I am going to take a second listen now that I know what street names and such to listen for. At any rate, I came across an interesting little event being discussed over the radio and I figured I'd just share some randomness with you - and also, it couldn't hurt to get the word out there about the missing girl at the same time. I don't normally cover this type of stuff, though I do mourn and ponder them to considerable depths personally. Well, I hope she is found safe and alive. That's all I can say. As for the strange explosion, guess it was just a transformer? Didn't hear anything else about it online or otherwise, so, meh. As the one officer said, it most certainly wasn't a missile landing :P and the eyewitness shouldn't have been fishing in the park anyway!

  • Feb 29 - Tucson G4S Lockdown DIRECT ACTION AGAINST BORDER MILITARIZATION, PROFITEERING AND ALEC IN TUCSON, AZ Wednesday, February 29, 2012 This morning, local activists are using direct action to shut down the transportation headquarters of G4S in Tucson, Arizona. Responding to Occupy Portland's call to shut down the corporate members of the American Legislative Exchange Council, this action is being taken to halt the profit-driven operations of ALEC member G4S. This massive company operates the buses used to transport those being deported or moved between immigration detention facilities, and contributes to untold strife and devastation for those criminalized by US Immigration policy. "The second largest multinational corporation after WalMart, G4S, a worldwide private security services provider, profits through the militarization of infrastructure along the US Mexico border, aiding US Border Patrol and US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement in the human rights crisis perpetuated through the daily seizure, detention and criminalization of undocumented people. G4S profits additionally from the private management of prisons, into which thousands of people are streamlined daily by the US prison-industrial complex and its corporate, governmental and military investors," explained Ben Lorber, a supporter of the action. Ben Lorber further stated, "Well beyond our borders, G4S bolsters and profits from state-based terror worldwide. In occupied Palestine, to cite one of many examples, the company provides ...
