  • Compost Pile Heat Compost Pile Heat - The compost pile produces heat; by the decomposition of the organic matter, the organisms produce heat as they break down, and then become earth. Once the decomposition has ended, the pile is earth and does not smell anymore. It cools, and finally earthworms crawl up from the ground into the pile. That's how you know that it is completely finished - when the earthworms are inside. Once they are, do not add anymore undecomposed matter, but rather use this pile for planting or a light covering on the grass, and start a new pile. The compost is accomplished with leaves, grass and kitchen matter. 'They' say not use fish and meat, as that attracts animals. Always cover the kitchen matter with some earth/grass etc. because otherwise it will attract bugs and flies. Marror = bitter herbs (root) - used to make 'Horse Radish' side dish (though how the 'horse' gets in I do not know). It's made with this bitter herb (ok, so this is a little mistake. It seems the plant itself is called Horseradish') and beets; maybe also some sugar, salt lemon and vinegar). Arovos = Willow bush in Heb. ADDITIONAL NOTE: Another great suggestion to compost in good time is to turn the pile every 1-2 days. I did this is over this summer ('08) and have a whole pile of finished compost already. What can be done with it? It can be used for flowers and vegetable gardens. Also, I saw in a grass care DVD that a thin layer can be spread over the grass. This will add earth so there will be ...
  • The Mummified Monk Thailand Koh Samui The well-preserved, Mummified body of the monk named Loung Por Ruam is the one and only Mummified Monk. He first sat down here 30 years ago. 25 years ago, people realized he was dead, and pickled him. He still looks remarkably good. Step in this Wat for a few minutes and take a good look at this mummy. This is the only mummy you will ever see that wears sunglasses, other than Madonna. Admission to the temple is free, but guests are reminded to dress in modest clothing and to remove sunglasses before entering. The Mummified Monk still has some hair, fingernails and very leathery skin, but dont touch it! The story behind this one, as the legend goes, is that 'Loung Pordaeng' a wealthy resident of Koh Samui who gave up all his earthly wealth when he became a Buddhist, died, in 1973, His followers noticed that he was not decaying, so they displayed him in a glass coffin, believing this to be a Buddhist miracle, despite the monks vociferous protests. He is still on display today, looking pretty good for his age, but not very happy. The mummified monk is in a temple, Wat Khunaram, situated on the south coast between Ban Thurian and Ban Hua Thanon, on the road between Nathon and Lamai, 10 minutes drive from Hin Tai and Hin Yai, after the junction to the water fall and the temple is on your left.

  • Amazon river.MP4 On a car ferry heading north towards the port of Manaus, we crossed 2 tributaries flowing into the beginning of the mighty Amazon and witnessed a strange natural phenomenon - the "meeting of waters". River or Rio Solimoes has brownish waters and it meets the dark waters (undecomposed vegetation) of Rio Negro and they do not mix for 6km. "This phenomenon is due to the differences in temperature, speed and water density of the two rivers. The Rio Negro flows at near 2 km per hour at a temperature of 22°C, while the Rio Solimões flows between 4 to 6 km per hour a temperature of 28°C."

Phototrophic Bacteria The photosynthetic or phototropic bacteria are a group of independent, self supporting microbes. These bacteria synthesize useful substances from secretions of roots, organic matter and/or harmful gases (eg. hydrogen sulfide), by using sunlight and the heat of soil as sources of energy. Useful substances developed by these microbes include amino acids, nucleic acids, bioactive substances and sugars, all of which promote plant growth and development. The metabolites developed by these microorganisms are absorbed directly into plants and act as substrates for increasing beneficial populations. B. Lactic Acid Bacteria Lactic acid bacteria produce lactic acid from sugars and other carbohydrates, developed by photosynthetic bacteria and yeast. • Sokushinbutsu -- Japan's Self-Mummified Monks - Sokushinbutsu were Buddhist priests who took their own lives in such a way that they became mummies and were revered for their spirit and dedication. Popular in northern Japan, especially around the Yamagato Prefecture, the practice of becoming Sokushinbutsu is believed to a tantric ritual from Tang China, brought to the Land of the Rising Sun by the founder of Shingon Buddhism. Regarded as the ultimate test of self-denial, the procedure of becoming Sokushinbutsu had the Buddhist monks go through several years of self-induced torture. During the first stage of the process, a priest would take on a diet of seeds and nuts, while taking part in riguros physical exercises that stripped them of all their body fat. This stage lasted for 1000 days. In the second part of the Sokushinbutsu process, the monk ate only the bark and roots of pine trees, and consumed a poisonous tee, made from the sap of the urushi tree. Commonly used to laquer bowls, the sap contained Urushiol, which caused him frequent vomiting and the loss of bodily fluids. This stage took another 1000 days. Finally, the self-mummifying monk locked himself in a small stone tomb that barely allowed him to assume a permanent lotus position. The tomb was sealed and a small air tube remained the monk's only connection to the outside world. He was given a bell, and each day he would ring it so that the people knew he was still alive. When the bell stopped ringing the air tube was removed and the tomb ...

  • Buddha's Lost Children - Om Mani Padme Hum Buddha's Lost Children is a beautiful documentary from the Dutch filmmaker Mark Verkerk. He follows the Thai Buddhist monk Khru Bah, who dedicated his life on helping the people in the villages and training orphans to be good Buddhists. The area he lives in is very poor and a lot of people are addicted or have been addicted to drugs. He bless them and teach them the good and bad things in life. He also takes care of little orphans and with his help they can learn to take care of themselves and others, they have enough food and are able to go to school. Music: Tibetan Incantations - Om Mani Padme Hum. Chants of Tibet: The Meditative Sound of Buddhist Chants Om mani padme hum (Derived from the Sanskrit, Devanagari ॐ मणि पद्मे हूँ, IAST oṃ maṇi padme huṃ) is probably the most famous mantra in Buddhism, the six syllabled mantra of the bodhisattva of compassion, Avalokiteshvara (Tibetan Chenrezig, Chinese Guanyin). The mantra is particularly associated with the four-armed Shadakshari form of Avalokiteshvara. The Dalai Lama is said to be an incarnation of Chenrezig or Avalokiteshvara, so the mantra is especially revered by his devotees. I have a lot of good memories associated with this song from my time in Nepal. (I own nothing)
