  • "Vanuatu - Part 3: Tanna & The Erupting Volcano" Teirrac's photos around Loméméti, Vanuatu A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Loméméti, Vanuatu by TravelPod blogger Teirrac titled "Vanuatu - Part 3: Tanna & The Erupting Volcano" Teirrac's travel blog entry: "Saturday I left Santo behind and flew to Tanna Island, which is most known for the Mt. Yasur volcano. It erupts pretty much all the time. And not just the boring smoke/ash kind of eruptions, the flying lava rock kinds of eruptions. And you get to walk right up to the top and look in (I'm 100% sure this would not be the case in the US...or any country with lawyers). Tanna is far less developed than Efate or Espiritu Santo, and the island is covered by tiny villages that are relatively unaffected by Western life (except of course for the nascent tourist industry of shuttling people to the volcano). There are only dirt roads and 4 wheel drive trucks -- we got to drive through lots of rivers and at one point used the beach as our road. The local villages care for their portion of the road...apparently Tuesday's are road-repair day (my trip back on Wed morning was a whole lot smoother than my initial arrival trip across the island). The guide I had for most of my trip couldn't comprehend that I wasn't married, had no children, and no brothers. Apparently my lifestyle is somewhat unheard of in the villages here...he was very polite but kept asking questions about how I could possibly survive. I stayed in a beach bungalow, built completely out of bamboo, palm trees, and coral. The coral bathroom ...

  • Vanuatu Land Boom - Vanuatu Dec 2006 All is not well on the Pacific paradise of Vanuatu. A property boom, fuelled by tourists, is undermining the island's traditional culture. Many claim their land is being stolen. "What happened to the Vanuatu way of life?" questions Graham. He first learnt his land had been sold when the bulldozers moved in. Without his knowledge, another family had registered the land as theirs and sold it to a foreign investor. Now, he cannot even access the ocean, formally reached through his land, because the path is on 'private property'. Produced by SBS/Dateline Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

  • Saving Nemo - Vanuatu January 2005 Since the success of the film 'Finding Nemo', demand for tropical fish has soared. But the seas of the Pacific are literally being emptied to feed this frenzy. Tropical fish are now virtually worth their weight in gold. "Everybody wants one because of this Nemo film," explains SRS Manager Larry Dacles. His company has a monopoly on tropical fishing in Vanuato, home to some of most popular tropical fish in the world. Former workers claim it got this monopoly by bribing government officials. In just three years, SRS has alienated local tourism operators, who depend on the tropical fish as an attraction, scientists, fear an ecological disaster in the making, and the traditional owners of the reefs. "They take anything and everything," complains one local. "It's out of control." Already there has been a 50% fall in tropical fish from the reefs. Now, it's not so much a case of finding Nemo as saving him. Produced by ABC Australia Distributed by Journeyman Pictures

  • Kava Culture- Vanuatu January 2009 Half the population of Vanuatu drink Kava root, which is fondly dubbed as the root of happiness. But deaths throughout Europe linked with this traditional South Pacific drink led to a ban. Kava is an intoxicating drink and is also used in traditional medicine. Yet fears over links to liver problems and death have led to bans in numerous countries. Dr. Lebot, a Kava expert, claims Kava is not addictive; I cannot understand how it could be toxic, insisting problems lie in the kava-based pill production. A local man explains Since we have Kava we have less problems. Before that drinking alcohol was a problem. Produced by ABC Australia, distributed by Journeyman Pictures
  • Waiting For Philip - Vanuatu September 2010 In the past 100 years the British monarchy has lost a lot of its shine. However, in a tiny corner of the South Pacific, one royal is worshipped. A far cry from Britain's most controversial prince... The locals of Tanna eagerly await the return of Prince Philip, who they believe is an ancestral spirit who emerged from a volcano to marry the queen. "According to a prophecy, the spirit who became Prince Philip is due to return". In anticipation, his 89th birthday saw the island irrupt in celebration, and although the 'second coming' never happened the villagers spirits aren't dampened. "One day his spirit will come and rest here". Produced By SBS Distributed By Journeyman Pictures

  • Vanuatu Sand Drawings UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2008 URL: Description: Situated in the South Pacific, the Vanuatu archipelago has preserved a unique and complex tradition of sand drawing. This multifunctional writing is more than an indigenous artistic expression and it occurs in a wide range of ritual, contemplative and communicative contexts. The drawings are produced directly on the ground, in sand, volcanic ash or clay. Using one finger, the drawer traces a continuous meandering line on an imagined grid to produce a graceful, often symmetrical, composition of geometric patterns. This rich and dynamic graphic tradition has developed as a means of communication among the members of some 80 different language groups inhabiting the central and northern islands of Vanuatu. The drawings also function as mnemonic devices to record and transmit rituals, mythological lore and a wealth of oral information about local histories, cosmologies, kinship systems, song cycles, farming techniques, architectural and craft design, and choreographic patterns. Most sand drawings possess several functions and layers of meaning: they can be read as artistic works, repositories of information, illustration for stories, signatures, or simply messages and objects of contemplation. Sand drawings are not merely pictures, but refer to a combination of knowledge, songs, and stories with sacred or profane meanings. A master sand drawer must therefore ...
