  • Sri Rudram - Camakam - by Ätmaprajnänanda Saraswati 'Taittiriya-Samhitä, the most complete and extant säkhä (recension) of Krshna-Yajurveda, contains seven kändas (books), 44 prapäthakas (lessons), 631 anuväkas (sections) 2198 prasnas, 129290 padas (words) and 253868 aksharas (letters). The seven kändas are -- i) Saumya, ii) Präjäpatya, iii) Vyäsadeva, iv) Ägneya, v) Ägneya-Brähmanaa, vi) Saumya-Brähmana, and vii) Kämyaka. 'Camakam' are eleven sections (anuväkas) in the 7th Prapäthaka of 4th Kända of Taittiriya-Samhitä of Krshna-Yajurveda. It can be written as KYV-Tai.Sam.-IV.7.1-11. Lord Rudra is associated with the number 'eleven' in scripture/s. The 33 deities of Vedic pantheon are - 8 Vasus, 11 Rudras, 12 Äditya, Jiva and Isvara. *** Explanation of Camakam by Swami Dayananda Saraswati The Camakam typically follows the Rudram. In the Rudram, one offers the salutations, 'namah'. The Camakam asks for the fulfillment of the devotee's wishes. The refrain, 'ca' and 'me' literally means, 'may this also be granted to me'. The 'me' (4th case) means 'to me' = for me. The Camakam is a prayer asking the Lord to give specific material effects. The ambitious human being requires some help, and therefore prays to the Lord. S/He demands a lot of things. Suppose Bhagavän -- the Lord were to appear in front of the devotee and asks him/her what s/he wants, one should simply chant the Camakam. One should present one's request in His own words, because it includes everything, it takes care of one's physical, emotional, and financial needs ...
