  • A Zarzuela & Other Lost Works by Jason Thorpe Buchanan - Tad Wind Symphony, Tokyo (Excerpt No. 1) A Zarzuela & Other Lost Works for Wind Ensemble by Jason Thorpe Buchanan (サルスエラと失われた音楽的断片/ジェイスン・ビュキャナン) was written between June and October 2007. A first attempt at writing for large instrumental ensemble, with the encouragement of Dr. Edward Harris of the San José State University Wind Ensemble, I was able to finish a first draft and have it read by his ensemble in March of 2008. Later, with the knowledge I had gained from this experience and the support of Maestro Takayoshi "Tad" Suzuki, I completed a final revision and re-orchestration in October of 2008 for a premiere performance in Tokyo, June 2009 by the Tad Wind Symphony. Lost Works refers to how the piece is constructed, utilizing thematic material and textures from various early sketches of chamber music I had written. These sketches were lost in the sense that they never really found a place in the music I was writing at that time. In the summer of 2007, I had been approached to write a chamber opera reminiscent of A Zarzuela, which is a form of Spanish opera or musical theatre. After writing much of the principal harmonic and melodic material, the chamber opera project fell through and I was left with a number of rough sketches. These were the basis for two of the large sections, my intention being to make a unified work from several parts that were lost. The original text also covers similar themes; a woman is left by her husband and is awaiting his return, but without knowing his ...

  • Titta Ruffo sings in Spanish - El Guitarrico - Zarzuela - Agustín Pérez Soriano Titta Ruffo (June 9, 1877 - July 5, 1953) sings Zarzuela!! In Musical America, December 27, 1913, Ruffo wrote the following: "In view of the fact that numerous vocal instructors have endeavored to claim the credit of having been my "teacher" I desire to state emphatically that my brother Ettore is the one to whom practically all such distinction is due. I studied four months at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome under Signor Persichini and was told that I possessed neither voice nor musical talent. Afterward I received instruction from Signor Sparapani for two months and from Signor Casini for four months, but as this was not sufficient tuition for an operatic career I placed myself under the tutelage of my brother. I remained his faithful pupil for six years and am the living proof of his scientific method of voice production. All those asserting that they have been my "teacher" and therefore responsible for my success arrogate to themselves false and mendacious prerogatives." This is the ultimate chiaroscuro voice. So dark and yet so full of squillante!! No one can touch this version for ultimate vocal splendor!
  • Placido Domingo in zarzuela: "La roca fria del Calvario" Jose Serrano: "La Dolorosa", act 1. The cold rock of Calvary - a Rafael's description of picture of Suffering Mother of the Redeemer: The cold rock of Calvary is hidden behind a black cloud. Up a solitary path the Virgin Mother walks on, And her dear face like a lily-flower has lost its colour. And in her wounded breast are nailed The thorns of sorrow. Her shaking body bends under the weight of her grief, but she continues. Walks on, as her ice-cold lips kiss the ground, where a flower blossoms at every drop of blood that falls from Jesus the Redeemer, dark pilgrim's emblems of pain turned to light. She walks on, walks on quickly because The Son is waiting for her, dying on the cross. Woman and mother! Of all the world most sacred. the walking Virgin sees the silhouette of the gibbet where her son is in agony, Her grief she pours out with a cry that she can't hold in. It is a heart-rending cry torn from the body of the woman. Divine star, you follow the trace of suffering humanity on your sad walk, walk of tears, the Suffering Mother of the Redeemer.
